Chickens go into moult when it gets hot. Their egg cycle needs light to form the eggs and lay eggs. August always slow the egg production, they shed their feathers and grow new feathers. This process takes about 6 weeks and they do not lay well when until the daylight hours start increasing, usually during January.

We had white leghorn chickens for a short time. Didn't like them at all. The rooster was so aggressive to the hens we finally gave him a white soccer ball to give the hens a break😂
