@Lisa McLouth. It's his wedding robe, signifying his identity as groom and husband. Throwing it off and walking away pretty much demonstrates his disdain for the marriage and for the bride. Sort of like saying "we might be stuck with each other but I am unwilling to fulfil my role as your husband".
