Hi. Stu is in denial; It's the Genoa track!😂😮😂. Trust me; a 50 year old boat, the caulking under the teak strip is all dried out. Some of the bolts will be a pain to remove but do it now while the boat is ripped apart. Create good access to all the bolts - they are going to leak in the future! Get big fender washers and bed the bolts with Butyl putty. With two of you on it it will go pretty fast and it'll be good for 20 years. Go for it!

You remove it , fiberglass over the rail and never install the track again , go with a low friction ring or block on lines to lead Genoa sheet

It's such a joy to see Marina's intros, presentation and attitude to what is a difficult and time-consuming refit job on Seabird. With Stu's growing technical skills you two make a dynamic team making us all impatient for the next instalment. I think the coming summer will see Seabird's refit rushing towards completion, well done guys.

Prep raw timber with 240 grit, sand base coat with 320, 400 for top coats on varnish. From an old French polisher who has worked on Luxury yachts 🙂, (you can also use wood grain filler after prepping if u want that glass type finish Miranda was talking about but i would advise against it - Too slippery)

Answering your question about the "surface texture": sanding and coating and sanding and coating again is the right way BUT you will always have that texture if you are going to use these foam rollers AND if you just (manually) roughen up the surface before the next coat and NOT SANDING IT F L A T with an excenter sander ! Sanding it flat means that the COMPLETE surface has to be mat with no glossy spots at all. Otherwise you just copy that existing "orange peel" into your next coat and make it even bigger from coat to coat. And: NO MORE FOAM ROLLERS ! They are totally fine for primers epoxy or underwater coating but not for top coatings inside. Use short haired felt rollers instead. Good luck and best regards from your annoying paintshop-master from Berlin, Germany

I don't know what you guys use for drop cloths, but a good and cheap item is freezer paper. It is (here in the USA) a heavy weight paper with an impervious coating on one side. So paints, solvents, etc won't seep through. Can be rolled up and burned when done. Easy Peasy. 👍🏻

@SailingSeabird It is used to wrap meat. Normally found along side the cling wrap and such at the supermarket. You can find it (here) in 24" rolls and is cheap. At least here it is easy to find and cheap. I love how you go slow on the boat. Too many channels want to get a project done so they can have a complete story each week. And then have problems. Re your dowels - there is a reason for the flutes that you showed on the first piece - they allow air to escape and glue to fill the voids as you are inserting the dowels. Straight dowel tends to squeeze the adhesive ahead of itself when being tapped into the hole which can create an airlock preventing the dowel from bottoming out, the flutes also ensure that the adhesive completely coats the sidewalls of the hole which ensures a waterproof seal.

The wood you varnished looked like some variant of mahogany. Mahogany takes a LOT of coats of varnish to fill the grain. If you want a perfect finish, put on 10 coats or so. It will get a bit smoother with each coat.

He left you again? Bloody skiver. That counter top with the sink and tap looks great, if you warm the varnish up before you put it on it'll spread and even itself out better, also if you gently run a brush over after you've rolled it, that'll make it look nice and smooth.

@@SailingSeabird keeping very well, just doing some re-wiring on le bateau, and installing new water tanks (solid ones, I hate the fucking flexi bags). I'm aiming to depart from here in 2 weeks (15th), should be at either navy or napoleon around the 23rd, but I'll be taking off pretty much the day after to go back home for Roxane's birthday and to pick up the car. So here's hoping that trip down on a single old cranky engine goes ok :D

11:07 : been there, done that. The orange skin look is caused by the foam roller. That is inevitable. You can get rid of that by first use a roller to get a good coverage. And after that lightly brush with a wide brush. But now you run the big risk of interchanging the orange skin look by a streak look. Also do *NOT* use too many coats of varnish. Otherwise it will get a cheap glossy plastic laminate look. My own choice was to use the roller to apply three coats of varnish, let it dry thoroughly, and then use the finest sandpaper to give it a very delicate sanding. Thus you get a slightly velvety look instead of the glossy look. Finish it off with some Pledge furniture wax. Best thing, in case you don't like that look, is that you can simply give it another sanding and apply a new topcoat to get a glossy effect.

You may find it difficult to get a smooth coat of varnish using a roller dipped in the can. First you’re contaminating the unused varnish and adding contamination to the varnish. Second a roller won’t yield a smooth coat. Get a good bristle varnish brush and use that 15:56 starting with a few diluted coats before you switch to full strength.
