Australians need a rake that is designed like a pet hair dematting comb. Curved tines are sharpened on the inside curve to cut through the mats in the pet's hair. A rake like that would cut through those runners, making the lawn rebound quicker! I also want to say that I am so happy to see you giving support to a domestic violence survivor. When I escaped an abusive marriage, back in 1993, there was not the awareness nor the support for DV survivors. I was pretty much on my own, trying to take care of three kids with no support, no job at first, no home, no furniture... just a car and my kids. So it makes me happy to see the awareness and support for survivors (male or female) of DV now!

I was thinking the same thing about the lawn. Like the times on a harvester!
@romadiau2 ай бұрын
I'm sure that if that worked, people would be using something like that. If you're not familiar with Kikuyu grass, you have NO idea what it's like. Those runners are like rope/cord and incredibly strong. They travel for feet on top of and under the ground. It can emerge in a garden bed 6' away from the "lawn" and if the updraft from a rotary mower can't lift them up to be cut by the blades, I can't see anything else working. You cannot afford to let Kikuyu get out of control, otherwise it's a nightmare. It DOES make a nice, tough lawn, but In peak growing season, I've had to mow it every 5-7 days to keep on top of it, plus regularly Roundup around the edges. Oh, and I live in roughly the same area as Ryan works and have dealt with this rotten grass all my life.

@BrendaHarney2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the explanation Ryan. I imagine you cringe when you walk into a yard and see it, lol.
@allanmowz2 ай бұрын
Can't speak for Australia but story goes New Zealand imported it deliberately to hold the sand dunes together from erosion. It did that easily and then went on to conquer the rest of the country also. But why do we still like it? It's an awesome grass if kept maintained. You can have a gold green of it if you mow it short and often enough. We use it in public parks and sports fields because it's self repairing - if a rugby player kicks a chunk up or even a car skids through it you'd never know in a few months time with no intervention at all. As a Kiwi mower I live the stuff, but again IF regularly maintained every few weeks at the least. Looking at the video I'm going to guess this lawn is only a few months growth.

Thank you for explaining the type of grass. All I heard was it was called "couch grass?" I live in the USA and never saw this kind before.
@allanmowz2 ай бұрын
Couch is similar but not the same. Kikuyu is thicker and more agressve. It's imported from Africa in the area of the Kikuyu tribe. Here in New Zealand the story goes we imported it to hold the sand dunes together, as it puts those runners throught the ground as well as over it - you could literally cut it to dirt and it would come back, and in this case that's what would be best for it and why he got as low as he did. Beautiful grass if regularly maintained and self repairing so good for public parks and sports fields. I do feel that if it were maintained to typical American heights of a couple of inches it would mat underneath and become a problem. Possibly why Aussies and Kiwis like short lawns I guess.

It's a self repairing very hardy grass. Great for sports fields and public parks. Good if regularly mowed, but it gets like this video after a few months untouched. I'm guessing this lawn is 3-5 month's worth. If you really pamper it you can get a golf green of about 6mm height if you mow it every few days.

Thank you for helping this lady. The yard looks good now. My question is why do people choose this type of grass for their yards in Australia if it's so difficult to deal with? Is it drought resistant or something?
@allanmowz2 ай бұрын
It is very tollerant yes. Kikuyu is self repairing which makes it great for sports fields and public parks. It's a great grass if you keep it maintained every 2 or 3 weeks, past that tho it gets stringy like this one. I'm guessing this lawn was 3-5 months growth. But you can even make a short golf green out of it if you keep it maintained right. It was imported deliberately from Africa, same in New Zealand where I'm from. At the same time tho it's not very good in damp shady areas - it simply won't spread to those areas behind my house at all.
@Smyth12262 ай бұрын
Oops, I meant New Zealand, so sorry. 😬It's the accent! 😄 If you take on this yard, I look forward to seeing what the grass can look like when properly maintained. Thank you for the info.
