Godsmack lead singer Sully Erna wrote "Awake." In an MTV online chat, he explained the song's personal nature: "That's me getting closure on a relationship. I'm just saying that now I'm awake, and I'm able to deal with everything I have to deal with. Where before I felt like I was going to lose control without this person in my life. I'm saying that I'm okay now without that person."

I've heard this song probably more than 1000 times, I've never looked up the lyrics. I am usually a geek about lyrics, but have always just rocked out to this song without paying attention. I noticed during the video this verse: "Take another second Turn your back on me and make believe that You're always happy It's safe to say you're never alive A big part of you has died And by the way, I hope you're satisfied" Paired with the chorus: "I'm alive, for you. I'm awake, because of you." I'm thinking about how we go about life, day to day, feeding our desire so easily, constantly in satisfaction to the point we are less likely to undertake big goals that require such a delay in satisfaction. Living in comfort, it's safe to say we're never alive, a big part of us is dead, but we're satisfied. He, himself is singing for our satisfaction, to profit, to make money. But even more, I think he's talking from the perspective of the evil behind desire, comfort, and satisfaction. Personally, I tend to remain in my comfort zone, feeding my desire of entertainment, staying comfortably satisfied. Occasionally, I wish I would go out and meet people, maybe find a woman and get on with life. But, I've fell into my comfort zone, probably because of fear of being hurt, after my last failed relationship, and it's been more than 5 years since I've wanted to date more than my fear of being hurt. It's safe to say a big part of me is dead.

Sting wrote Every Breath You Take about a stalker, public reaction "it's such a romantic love song" Ed Sheeran wrote A Team about a drug addicted prostitute and I swear I got asked by a bride to play it at her wedding because it's so romantic. Metal band write a love song "oh this is drugs for sure" 😂 It's so interesting how people take a someone's appearance or genre to project a meaning into something, some times we just got to listen and enjoy or really be objective and look at it lyrically and ignore the writers perceived lifestyle

When it comes to metal music its what the music means to you more than what the actual meaning is.You can always find meaning in metal songs whether or not its what the lyrics mean to the singer. And mostly its about the music and how it makes you feel and what it means to you! Unlike rap and r&b the words sometimes mean less than what the music makes you feel if that makes sense.Music is indeed the universal language!

My parents used to play Godsmack and Alice in chains and incubus and Staind and such (had a bunch of concert and studio CDs that they'd throw on over some loud speakers) every Saturday night when I was a kid and my uncle would pop out and they'd get smashed and party with some neighbors n have a good ass time and now this is going to be some of my favorite music forever even now that I fw rap a lot as well

There songs are not about drugs lol. The 1st album was actually about his ex. The songs get back, stay away etc.

Brad- just focusing on the words but never truly into the hard stuff unless you naturally have that stoic face. You crack me up. Lexi- dam girl you have been a sleeping rocker your whole life. You were born to listen to rock! Love it!

Rockers do sing and they are some of the best because they're range is board thru learned how sing properly but then add the rock twist - look up the lead singers from disturbs vocal range. The technique rock music uses when singing is called vocal fry and distortion. Godsmack when she was talking about a lava lamp would be described as his voice is hypnotic

To me, this song is about carrying someone in a relationship who doesn't try. Then recognizing and getting away from those toxic relationships.
