Epic is correct... Alanis' best song I feel... this song evokes all kinds of emotions and imagery, but when it reaches it's intense crescendo it almost has Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' vibe, it's cinematic in it's scope.

There's a haunting motif stressed by three notes: G, B flat, and B. And then when the orchestra kicks in, you get this Arabian/Egyptian vibe. Very DISSONANT TENSION!!!
@dggydddy59
@dggydddy59 2 жыл бұрын
Which notes are you referring to? You can't mean that 4 note pattern on the piano that repeats throughout the song? Because then you'd mean Eb Bb B and Bb, assuming your Bb and B are correct, which let's just assume they are. Not having perfect pitch, I can't tell what key this is in just by listening, I only have relative pitch. Or did you mean 3 other notes? Just curious, not attacking. Cheers!

The whole song is influenced by Eastern/Indian music. Not just the strings, but also the percussion (Indian tabla) and the verse melody, second verse in particular. This was the first song Alanis released after her trip to India, and the influence is clear.
@allieren

The song is also based around the mixolydian mode/scale which has an exotic sound (to Western listeners) and gives it a bittersweet feel.

Funny, I never got the stalker angle. I always took it as she 'simply wanted an object to crave'... something physical and temporary. And then the person got inside her head 'uninvited' and she began to have deeper feelings for them. Like she just wanted sex, but found a person she really now cares for, and has to deal with those feelings.

She has the most unique voice, it takes you to another place in your head. With the strongest emotions. J was just listening and tears just started coming out of his eyes. That’s pure Alanis!!

The first time I heard this song, when it was first released, it woke me up playing on my radio alarm. I’m normally slow to wake, but I sat bolt upright and was OBSESSED. Fun fact: this song was on the City of Angels soundtrack, which had a lot of interesting songs by various artists.

She wrote it for a movie with Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage about an Angel choosing to fall to Earth for love. It plays at the pivotal and most tragic scene in the entire film. It is PERFECTION! And, won the Oscar for best song that year. She performed it live on the Oscar's that year. She KILLED IT!

The movie was City of Angels. Alanis didn't win the Oscar for Uninvited. She wasn't even nominated (neither was Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls). She was nominated for a Golden Globe for this song.

Great reaction..and you're right..she writes all her own songs and lyrics and also changes which syllable she emphasizes as she sings. She is incredible!!! Probably 9ne of my top 3 female voices / singer. You've just barely scratched the surface of her catalogue. Other songs to check out are: head over feet, hands clean, thank you, Guardian, everything, reasons I drink, ablaze, empathy, receive, lens, not as we..

Her first hit was a pop song...very in keeping with the times. "Too Hot". Feeling she wasn't in control of the way she wanted her career to go...she "took over" and created the musical career that fit her writing style. Another Canadian musical wonder. 😉

A song for parents by Alanis: Perfect. A song about her experiences being Catholic: Forgiven. Both are excellent.
