Considering she did the dance from the movie, I'd say she did pretty great. If you're honestly insulted, take it up with Disney.
@xavierviolet86517 жыл бұрын
Help Me so glad this comment exists but I wish those people would stop. It's from a movie and her intent was probably to make it be the dance from the movie lol. Agree with you 100%!!

Help Me she should've referenced a real hula dancer because Disney is not an accurate source

Lost from what I read on somewhere I can't seem to remeber, that Disney put a lot of cameras (21 I guess) to draw the dance correctly

After reading all this coments I just have one thing to say: I don't think most of the people do things from other cultures to make fun of them or maybe insult people of any culture. The fact is than you have just one culture and it's not possible to know perfectly the others so you can learn different things from another cultures BUT you never will be an expert. Maybe this girl has learned in the wrong place or maybe with a wrong teacher, this not mean she wants to be rude or insult the hawaian culture. Im from Uruguay but I live in Spain and I don't know how to dance perfectly "sevillana" or "flamenco" but I try to do my best when I dance, this is not "culture apropiation" Im just having fun with something beautiful from another country... I hate this word because some people uses it to transmit the idea of "this is MY culture, not YOURS, and you can't do anything of my culture" (wtf) Please... remember that we are HUMANS, not only races... thank you.

Maybe it wasn’t her intention to mock the culture but I think Hawaiians have every right to be upset to find their (dying) culture inaccurately represented. Because she’s not the only one. This is nationwide, if not world wide. Hawaiian culture to most people outside of Polynesia is just seen as something exotic to display to others to seem cool. It’s just a party theme to a lot of people around the world and people forget it’s a real culture with real people. I’ve gone to parties in the mainland US and the whole time I got served on a silver platter. But they had no actual interest in the culture itself. And that’s what upsets people. If someone is going to represent another culture it’s not unreasonable for people of that culture to want it to at least be accurate.

Our kumu Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu composed, performed and choreographed the animated dance you see in Lilo and Stitch. It is wonderful to see how many young folks have learned it. It is a beautiful and very traditional chant to King Kalakaua in a new setting. Every halau has a different styling and I find it very interesting to see how they all preserve the important meaning in the words of the chant even if the interpretation is a bit different.

I love my Polynesian side. Hula is such a beautiful cultural dance. Living in Deep South Virginia I can't get to any real instructors. So KZbin is all I have to learn from. I wish more natural born Polynesians would be more accommodating to those of us not as close to the mother islands, but still want to connect to them through dance. I love how gracefully she danced the piece. It didn't look like she was in front of a panel of traditional judges for points. She was just sharing a cultural piece at a talent show.

I've watched this video a few times and every time the comments depress me. If you're offended by this try and keep and open mind and realize all the factors that went into her dancing how she did and maybe don't go all out WWIII on her. Believe it or not but helping people by kindly guiding them in the right direction is more effective than screaming.

Noelani Sinclair Thank you so much for having a more progressive and positive view- ;w; if they bash the people that try to learn their culture and mess up, then their culture will fade further away and they'll have a negative reputation...
@genovevaavila3647 жыл бұрын
I think she did great. All this negativity is sad. She was nervous which was probably why she did the dance so fast but her arms were at the right speed. Give her a break.

@michaelpalmieri73353 жыл бұрын
@@kianabm2268 I think they're talking about the dancing, not the song. Some people say this isn't true, authentic hula, that it's just a parody of Hawaiian dancing staged solely for the amusement of misguided and misinformed tourists who know nothing about the true meaning of Polynesian culture and traditions. At least, that's my impression of how they see it.

This is the best video of He Mele No Lilo that I've seen so far. You dance gracefully and let your body and hand gestures go with flow of the song. I guess this is what my PE teacher talks about "letting your emotions flow through movements" and not just to "impress your audience with your dance skills." You should probably do a step by step tutorial. You're an awesome dancer. ;)

To you Polynesian folks, I LOVE your culture. It's beautiful, and a lot of other great things! After visiting Kauai last June for 2 weeks, I love Hawaii to the point of wanting to live there. If I can, I'd love to learn about Polynesian/Hawaiian culture so I can apply it to a Hawaiian character I have in the book I'm writing
