Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is proud to have partnered with the Waikato River Festival to create this special reminder about who we are:
‘Waikato-taniwha-rau. He piko, he taniwha.
Waikato of a hundred taniwha. At every bend, a taniwha can be found’.
Our chiefs used this saying to describe their brutal defence. A chief on every bend.
Defending. Supporting. Protecting. Join us as we journey the mighty Waikato River from Port Waikato to Tongariro. With the guidance of mōteatea, Waikato te awa, we travel through the homelands of our Waikato chiefs and pay homage to the people, history, events, sacred entities and all that call Waikato home.
"In order to understand and appreciate the psyche of the Māori, if one was able to access the epitome of modern literature, then one can understand the thinking. That body of knowledge is very much encompassed in mōteatea" Dr Wayne Ngata.
