Yeah that's exactly it. It just shows how good a manager Fergie actually was to win the league with a team that went on to finish 7th or 8th whatever it was. Best job at worst time definitely. Moyes did an amazing job at my club Everton with no money to spend. Completely turned the club around. He's a good manager. He also walked into a hiding onto nothing at Sunderland and took a risk going over to Spain. He should choose his jobs more carefully that's what I will say. @@jamesfzj2495

United success was based on only one model which was Fergie. Everything went thru him. And United was very successful. The sad fact was that the success papered over the clubs many deficiencies without him when he retired, that is they never had a business model to put in place when he went.

Very interesting and valuable insights here from Rio Ferdinand - and an absolutely essential lesson for managers [leaders] in any industry or profession. Good managers assign [delegate] tasks to people - then step back and trust that person to deliver. [of course, they offer support and guidance if needed but still allow the person to take ownership of the work and in producing the desired outcomes]. Moyes, was clearly a micro-manager - wanted total control over the work and in doing so clearly demonstrated a lack of trust in the person and their abilities. In effect, Moyes was much more focused on his own performance and in convincing everyone what a good manager he was! The Micro-management ['Command-and -Control'] style of leadership is an utter disaster at improving performance and productivity both individually and with teams - particularly where people are 'competent' or 'expert' at task. By comparison and the reason why Sir Alex Ferguson is very much in demand as a speaker at Business Schools and to business leaders - is that he had truly inspirational leadership skills and understood how to get the best out of oftentimes, quite ordinary talent. SAF also realised that 'managers manage work - leaders manage people'.

I think it just showed the Rio wasn't open to new ways of working. they may have won the title, but they were still poor by their own standards, particularly the first half of the season. In many ways it mirrored what happened with Souness at Liverpool. Both tried to change things too quickly, but with United, the moment when SAF announced he was stepping down, there should have been a transitional period where Moyes was integrated into the club, or the old staff (Phelan etc) were kept on for at least a season while Moyes found his feet, and made his changes incrementally.

What Man Utd and their fans have to understand is that the Ferguson era is over, that era is gone and they have to move on from it.. I still dont think the club have 100% recovered from Ferguson leaving. I think he was that important to them. What Ferguson did at Utd was amazing and I'm a Liverpool fan.

Moyes was given a hospital pass. United were champions in name but they were the poorest team United have ever had to win the title. Fergie ( god love him) had totally taken his foot off the gas and the board @ United failed miserably to put in place proper succession planning. There was NO EXCUSE for this as they had years and years to prepare properly. When they decided that Moyes was to be the man why didn't they ask him immediately which players he wanted so they could get the ball rolling? It's just common sense. And then they gave him a 6 year contract to sack him after 8 months????? The board were a bunch of incompetents!!!!!!!

Ferdinand should become a manager he seems to know everything about coaching a big club. A problem for Moyes was he took over an ageing team, and didn't have the 20 years at United behind him like Fergie which garnered instant respect. It's very easy to say he did this and that wrong, but subsequently LVG and Jose have failed to be successful despite getting far more money to spend.

Dan No the problem for moyes was getting rid of the staff and replacing them with his own, he was offered to keep them, even recommended I think, but he chose not to, if he had he would have came in and nothing would have changed, he would have won things.. mike phelan even said Fergies last few years he didn’t do much, he left it to everyone else, United had their most successful period in history while mike phelan and Rene meulenstien were there, moyes replaced them with Phil Neville and other pillocks from Everton, that was his mistake

Man U were always going to struggle after Fergie, who ever came in. The process was badly managed. Ideally Ferguson should have remained as head honcho for at least another year. Allowing a new manager to adjust to the club and in time the club to him. Phelan leaving was the biggest mistake Moyes/Man U made. In '02 Ferguson got it wrong. '13 wasn't much better. With David Gil going in '13 did Ferguson even get offered his rolling one year deal? Maybe we'll never know. They'll always have cotchells of money for "marquee singnings", but something has now been lost. Good luck anyone trying to find it.

I keep hearing this tripe that Plug just said " Oh but they were a Championship winning team"...there's a difference.....the ONLY reason they won the title that season was Ferguson. He made the most of the poorest squad United had in 20 years. Anyone who watched United regularly knew this was a squad that desperately needed investment and Ferguson was culpable more than anyone for NOT recruiting well in the previous 5 seasons!!! MUFC were also guilty of taking it easy. Imagine the clown who allowed David Gill to leave @ the same time leaving Ed Woodward responsible for bringing in the finest talent in Europe? The bloke has proven to be incapable of negotiating a new contract for his mobile phone ffs. David Moyes was given a hospital pass. Some managers are very good in the championship but poor in the premiership(Warnock). Some can manage any premiership team and not get relegated (Allardyce) and some can take a poor premiership team and in time bring them permantly top half of the table (Moyes). These type of managers generally find it difficult to manage above their level and Ferdinand gives an example of that with Moyes not delegating in the bigger club. Maybe allardyce is a bad example because if Keoman didn't buy 9 first team players he couldv'e had a better shot at Everton. Now they have time to gel, they are looking good.

It was obvious why Moyes failed. He wasn't given enough time, and Fergie's players were all still leaders within that club, despite being all being old, out-of-form, and no longer fit for purpose like Rio was. He didn't have their respect from the outset and he was never going to get that respect because the influential players who were still in that dressing room were never willing to change. Moyes should have kept Fergie's backroom team and and got rid of the deadwood like Rio asap.

They can laughingly compare Moyes to Emery all they like but he finished with 70 points in his first season, enough points this season gone to walk into 3rd and the CL instead of 8th and the EL. Toxic media and consequently fans ensured he was sacked instead.

But Utd demands attacking, winning football. Moyes never set up teams in that way. Gordon Strachan said it best: "When I was the manager of Coventry my job was to not be beaten by the big boys. When I became manager of Celtic my job was to beat the teams trying not to be beaten by the big boys." Moyes could make a team hard to beat, but not one that would blow teams away.

I think some people have said Moyes should have been given time but I disagree there, I don’t think he was the right type of manager there and even with leaving United, his career after that has been inconsistent up until his good season with West Ham and putting them back in Europe. At best I think he’s a Europa League manager, really if he’s on form himself & he’s got the right squad then sure he can do that and he’s done it & shown he’s still got something. But he’s not a title winner and I think people expected United to win the title next season after Ferguson had left, I know Ferguson had apparently suggested Moyes but it was clearly the wrong choice. That squad that was left behind by Ferguson was an ageing shoe string squad & it showed how good Ferguson was a manager. It’s good to see United going back to the right direction but who knows what they need to win the title again in the squad ?

most footballers now are ego narcasists who don't care about winning and giving 100%. genrally it is there fault and not the managers fault. they don't treat their jobs like we treat our real careers. they are still 16 year olds in mentality. they are on average 10 years behind the rest of us in psychological maturity......it's a difficult job being a modern manager. it's not like playing an old champ manager game where everyone does what they are told.
