There are several alpaca farms in my area. One of them has an event for kids to come see and pet the alpacas. He has hay rides, games and you can get your picture taken with them. Some are just so sweet and then you have the butt heads. I love going through the shop to see the latest scarves and gloves. I can't knit or crochet so the skeins are just pretty to look at.

Thanks a bunch. I wish I would've started a lot earlier myself so you're right nothing, like the present. Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help. Alpaca are a lot of work but I love them. There are lots of other options that are probably easier and cheaper. The goats are pretty lucrative and a lot less work. I still wouldn't do anything different because I just love making the yarn and enjoy the alpacas.

Love alpacas! My husband used to be the farm manager/sole care taker on an alpaca farm. There was about 80 girls and 25 boys. Cant forget the girls "watch dog" Atlas, he was a llama. Many were champion fiber. We acquired one of the girls when the owners sold because she made friends with my husband. Her name is Wendy ( from Peter Pan)

Wow. What a great interview with someone who really knows the alpaca business. I was fascinated by his wealth of knowledge about everything from snails to alpaca poop to yarn and everything in between. Interesting to hear how he uses the traits of other animals to serve the needs of keeping his herd healthy and producing good fiber. I have a much greater appreciation for those who make their yarn 'from scratch'. I loved this video. Thanks so much, Doug and Stacy, for taking us with you on your field trip.

She would LOVE this yarn. OMGOODNESS it looks so soft. I love the dryer balls. I've got to get me some of those! His farm and animals were beautiful. He also seemed liked a very kind soul too. I think it's wonderful that you guys are so diligently trying to help others come up with ideas of how to make money on their farms. Just another way you're blessing others. I'm serious, God really knew what he was doing when he set you guys on this path. Thanks so much for sharing this. I truly enjoyed it! Love, hugs and blessings, Lisa

Thanks guys! Really enjoyed this one. Working on getting my head around how to add value to the system, not so much to make money, but the home place needs to pay for it's self so I don't need to leave to support it. I see a tone of potential to have both diverse and complimentary systems working into a stable, resilient ecosystem. Very inspiring!

I was stationed in Panama Canal Zone for 5.5 years back in the early 80's. The Kuna Indians of San Blas are very gifted people that sell and make all kinds of clothing, rugs wall hangings, sea shell art and blankets, the Alpaca products are mostly made in Peru and sold by the Kuna as one of their income streams. They are also know world wide for their Mola's. One of my most prized possessions was a king size dark brown Alpaca Blanket. Its was beautiful and so soft to curl up in, I also had several rugs. Alpaca is very delicate and should be handled with special care. Mine are all gone now, over the years they simply wear out.
