Then again, numbers are what I do. My uncle who I do his taxes is a mechanic. I know very little about the workings of the internal combustion engine so when I need mechanical advice I go to him.

My father did a similar type of lending for a while. He was lending money to people in the real-estate market that would buy, remodel and flip for profit. It all seemed ok on paper but the amount of people that would not pay the loan back on time was a huge headache. There were multiple deals that my father wasted a lot of his time just to get his money back and break even.

Numbers don’t lie. Ask the relative for more info, like you’re interested in it. Get the figures of profit and loss (when deadbeats don’t pay) where you get the money to start, your payback if borrowing and set down with him. Let the numbers speak for themselves and it likely will be bad. If he continues on, then it’s on him. Math doesn’t care about your wishes and dreams. Math deals only with facts.

Well, before trying to and get them to change their minds, it's often helpful to make sure you're right. I dong see that there's any wrong with peer to peer lending in principle, although I'd want to investigate any particular implementation pretty carefully, and I certainly wouldn't want a large fraction of my money invested that way. The problem I see is the the guy is borrowing in order to play at it. Of course a body might also have moral objections, because the people who are most successful at lending money to to desperate and stupid are generally not the sort of people one wants to associate with.

I think the first step is going to be to listen. Get him to explain what this investment really is and listen properly to it. Understand why he thinks it is a good idea. Be open to the possibility that he's right (I think the caller said at about 3:00 that he was borrowing to invest in it - that's very unlikely to be a good idea, but investing money you can afford to lose in it might not be a bad idea). If he's interested in p2p lending but seems to be excited about a scam version of it that is making ridiculous claims, then point him towards a legitimate platform that makes realistic claims (ie. returns slightly above what you would get from a savings account).

Ok joke aside I see many people who like Dave says work their butt off but are barely in a surviving mode because working two minimum wage jobs is not sufficient enough to sustain a family specifically when there are kids involved. Many of them do want to go to college get degrees to better their way of life but as a breadwinners and family being dependent on them they struggle in life. This is real life cases I see daily.

Great advice from Dave, but he had to slip in the Bitcoin crack. Dave and his people simply don’t understand Bitcoin. For example, he keeps saying it’s a get rich quick scheme. My timeline for seeing a significant payoff in BTC is 10 years, hardly a get rich quick scheme. What he also fails to account for is the changing dynamics of the economy. Too much to get into here, but his precious mutual funds are losing money if they’re not returning an annual average of at least 14%.

If it is risky don't expect Dave to approve it looks like. Risk can be carefully and sophisticatedly managed like a bank but you won't find risk management techniques here though.

If this guy is really excited about it, it sounds like it probably isn't legit p2p lending. The legit platforms just provide a return on investment perhaps a percentage point higher than a savings account. It's not something anyone is going to get excited about. Like all good investments, it's boring. And I think the caller said at about 3:00 that his brother-in-law was borrowing money to invest it in. Borrowing money to invest is usually a very bad idea (a mortgage on a rental property is the only margin investing most people should even be considering). I can't see why anyone would borrow money to invest in legit p2p lending - it just doesn't generate the returns required for that to even look like a good idea. If he's borrowing money to invest in it, someone is telling him he can get massive returns from it, which means it's not a legit platform.

Yeah, not too likely. But it can happen. My cousin retired at about 37 and he only worked a few years in his life. He got in with a bunch of rich folk that thought he was the wisest man ever because as a councilor he told them: 1: You're responsible for your own actions, 2: Stop being a whiner, get off your duff, and work for what you want to happen. They threw money at him for such wise advice. Then he got sick of dealing with them, quit counseling, and took up painting. They found out about that and they all had to have some of his paintings. So they threw more money at him. After a couple years of that he got fed up again and just went dark. I haven't seen or heard from him in decades. He's my only living blood relative these days too, I'd like to find him to at least say hello.
