I worked in a butterfly exhibit for four years, so I'm pretty fond of butterflies and moths. They are so beautiful but they have very short lives once they hatch from their chrysalis/cocoon. (Butterflies come from a chrysalis, moths from a cocoon.) My job was cleaning out the deformed ones in our hatching chamber. I thought poop on my hand was gross until I was cleaning the chamber and a dud chrysalis fell onto my hand and exploded, spewing slush and goo all over me. I imagine that's what a human corpse would smell like if it was left in the sun.

I have never seen this caterpillar before July 2022 in Kent U.K. but I found one in my garden pretending to be a snake… when I found it the caterpillar sucked it’s face in so only the eye pattern on its upper body showed and it went on to move it’s head from side to side like it was a snake (A warning off I assume).I looked it up next day to find it was a Elephant hawk moth caterpillar! I assume it was attracted to the rose bay willow herb and ground straw in my garden but I will definitely invest in some Fuchsia plants to encourage more of these adorable fat caterpillars to feed and pupate in my garden next year xx

you handled the specimen absolutely fine. I hatch over 500 different butterfly species a year and I solely work with my hands, nothing else. The people commenting saying that you handled it incorrectly are a bunch of rookies and fruits.

i dont care wut ppl r saying, ur moth was very beautiful, yeah maybe shouldnt have handled her right after but its not going to kill her, i had a cecropia moth, found it in its cocoon outside on the back of a bench when i was moving and my dad actually ripped it off and threw it on the ground,i picked it up and took it home had no idea wut it was tried my best to get any info on it i took the pupa out of the leaf cocoon ,i had no idea how old it was. thought it was a luna moth for the longest time, then about 1 week before it hatched i found out it was a cecropia moth, so pretty. it hatched 1 month earlier than it was suppose to i guess and i didnt have the proper habitat for him. so he hatched in a small container i was keeping the pupa in and his wings were a little bent but he could fly just fine and i handled him with my hands right after he came out. he was just fine, i placed him on a tree outside about 30 min. after he hatched. i waited for him to fly away but he was still. i went over to place him on another tree bc the first tree was really low to the ground and he shot clear liquid at me almost 40 min after he had hatched. i went inside for a bit, about 1 hour and then went to check on him he was gone, while sitting on my porch talking to family he flew back and landed on my arm, i knew it was him bc his wings werent completely straight . he flapped his wings a few times then flew away

Almost as if it was waiting for you to leave before hatching, Possibly because of the sounds of your voice. This kind of reminded me of watching my Rare ghost lobster molt when i had my 50G fish tank.
