It's a huge gamble because if you have another wait period of cody going on this spiel of him finishing the story people will start to not care. My money is on night one tag match ending with Seth taking the pin after Cody gets laid out and Seth blaming Cody for the loss. Night 2 comes around and after some bloodline interference Seth comes out looking like he is going to help Cody but ends up swerving on him costing Cody the match. Cody and Seth will continue to feud with Cody ultimately winning that title. After Roman passes Hogan’s record, Cody will eventually face and beat Roman to unify the titles (reports say HHH hates two titles).

Countless examples of people losing when everyone wanted them/expected them to win and they’ve gone on to be just fine. Bret Hart WM9, The Rock WM 16, CM Punk didn’t get his WM main event back in 2013, Daniel Bryan loosing the rumble. Too many examples to list them all. Fact is he’ll come out and cut a promo and it will be on to the next show and after a few weeks I would be surprised if people were still talking about it. Just how WWE does business historically.

Honestly the only problem with his heel turn at WM17 was the timing of it, with Rock leaving for Hollywood the Raw after Mania, and the fact there were no big babyfaces on the roster that were on the same level of Rock and Austin (maybe aside from Undertaker). Looking past though Austin did an incredible job balancing the violent side, the comedic side, and the paranoid of side his heel character. And honestly 2001 was Austin’s peak whether people like his heel run or not, some of his best matches came from that year.

This whole promo makes a lot more sense when you realize The Rock has no clue that Cody Rhodes literally did exactly what he said, he lost last year, dusted himself off and came back this year and WON THE ROYAL RUMBLE BACK TO BACK FOR A 2ND YEAR IN A ROW TO FACE ROMAN AGAIN but Rock thinks that never happened apparently and Cody just wants a rematch for the sake of nothing. I don’t think Rock keeps up with the product much. I think people forget Cody actually wrestled with a completely torn right pectoral muscle at Hell in a Cell 2022 vs Seth Rollins. He's whole right arm was black and purple from the torn pectoral and he competed for almost 20 minutes and after the match he got a standing ovation from the crowd and the next night on Raw when he came out to address the injury. And Seth Rollins pulled a double turn on Cody to write him off T.V for 6 or 7 months until he returned at Royal Rumble 2023 were he won the match and challenged Roman for the Championship at WrestleMania 39. So I think a lot of fans remember that part of the story as well
