He said YES!

On December 16, 2016, I asked this handsome man to be my husband and he said, "Yes!" Patrick O'Brien and I are a mighty good team.
In August of this year, Patrick and I said goodbye to our beloved dog Teddy, who lost an eight-month battle with congestive heart failure. Teddy was an extension of Patrick's heart and soul -- his son. On the day before we were scheduled to put Teddy to sleep, I put on a bow tie, sat at my computer, and recorded this video marriage proposal that I would share with Patrick when the time came. Within hours of recording the video, Teddy's condition began to decline rapidly and we ended up saying a painful goodbye to him at our vet's office later that same evening. This proposal was, quite literally, the last thing Teddy did on this earth.
Special thanks to my very best friend, Haely White, whose mad editing skills sculpted these clips from our dearest friends and family into a moving tribute to Patrick and my relationship.
And just like that, 2016 is redeemed. Keep the love flowing, folks. We all deserve it.

The year of this proposal, your proposal, we would have married, in Barcelona where Bill (my Marine) and I, had figured out how to afford it. Bill liked Barcelona because they were proud of their Gay people, the Anarchist history was part of that, so that he could be free to be himself. Bill’s life was very wrongfully cut short while courageously trying to lighten up a situation. He teased a little. Their excuse would be something like the “gay panic defense”. We were together for several decades, through years when such marriage was symbolic not official and gay people in the military became subject to Reagan’s witch hunts, not openly respected. Today there is lightening and thunder and rain here. If only broken heart syndrome or a bolt of lightening would have struck already, here in the woods where no one will care. Love each other, don’t let bougie values or straight models and lies about relationships and marriage influence you or make you think you have to be jealous rather than inclusive, a fortress relationship rather than an open loving one where it is each other’s happiness and Love that matters first. We were open, though choosing love and each other for always. With all my heart and soul I Love Bill. There are so many times when I was away, overseas or at university, or both, when I hoped he would have someone to be good company at our home in the woods here. If there had been someone more I would not be so alone now, without anyone here who knew him and knew us that way. We had dogs, one in particular, black with a perfect white cross on her chest and big pointy ears like radar, followed him perfectly, afraid to lose him. She passed, maybe from the same as Teddy, less than two years before Bill’s life was taken. Dogs are maybe here in spirit, one partly a Shepherd, not wanting to be here without Bill so passing the summer before her brother did, and the other, her brother, a big white bear of a Great Pyrenees guarding me and waiting as the optimist he was for Bill’s return through the gate at the end of our sandy driveway, doggedly following, despite my efforts to have him rest, when I would venture a walk to neighboring acreages. Without Bill enjoying his work on the roof, or the other projects he would be creating, there are leaks, although I have this space as a retreat. There are many ways he is here. If he will be more here that will be nice. Just know nothing is more important than Love.
