To be fair, Downing was one of the leading players for the amount of assists in Europe at one point. He also did very well at West Ham and Villa and Boro early on. People focus on his time at Liverpool where he was played out of position at left Back mostly. A very decent player at his best but probably not international quality. I agree though, Carrick should have been a mainstay in the England team.

United signed Carrick in 2006 and Hargreaves in 2007. United went on to win 3 league titles and a UCL with the midfield of Scholes Carrick and Hargreaves (all 3 started the 08 UCL final). England’s template was right there in front of their eyes but the managers (Sven Capello etc. all blew it).

The England mangers over the 2000s were naive. A lot of them didn’t want to move away from a 442 but when your playing a country like Spain in a hot country that formation wasn’t ideal. Gerrard and Lampard couldn’t play with each other and that’s a shame but playing a player like Carrick in behind Gerrard and Scholes would have made the game faster and efficient which would have lead us to quick successive counters.

His two seasons at Spurs he was fantastic. Great DLP and much better in the tackle than people give him credit for. Not destructive but read the game so well and made vital interceptions while remaining on his feet to then go on andbuild quick attacks. Woefully underused by England.

Newcastle fan here and Shelvey Single handedly at times won us the game with his quality. No red cards or yellow cards in 2018. I think Rafa has calmed him down. Definitely should be in the England squad.

Carrick is retired so currently the only solution in CDM position for england is Kalvin Philips . However he is currently playing in english championship but he have the potential to became the best of the world in that position if he getting chance. I cant see any potential in Delcan Rice and Erick Dier is totally out of form.

The problem with the England national team is the coach..too adamant on using the 4-4-2 system when they should have used 4-3-3..neville and cole on fullback..carrick, scholes and beckham in midfield..gerrard, lampard and rooney upfront..would be an ideal setup considering they had a lack of talented strikers at that time

dude no 4141 scholes and later carrick in front of defence. lamps and stevie box to box, joe cole cutting inside from the left with a cole doing the overlap. hargreaves inverted rb joining central midfield and becks on the right. or neville as classic rb depending on the opposition. Lamps and stevie are not wingers for a 433 and playing as 2 nr 10s in a 4321 also is not their strong suit

If I'm not mistaken, he mentioned in an interview that traveling with the national team was not good for him mentally. He suffered depression and I believe it was his call to not be featured for international duty. It's not a matter of him being undervalued or unlucky, traveling with the national team was not for him and people have to accept that. I am kind of surprised that Rio Ferdinand, his teammate and captain, didn't know that though.

yet Gerrard and Lampard did nothing together both do the same thing and probably not a popular opinion Lampard wasnt as good a midfielder people make him out to be especially compare to Gerrard and Scholes. Even in the great Chelsea sides he had Ballack, Essien, Makelele etc behind him and they are the ones that kept the midfield running. Also Scholes was played on the LW for England and probably why he stopped earlier than what was needed too.

Gerrard and Lampard were nothing alike other than their ability in front of goal. Lampard destroyed defences with his vision and tricky runs, Gerrard played as a box-to-box and did a little bit of every midfield role, including how Carrick plays. It's because of Gerrard that Carrick got so few caps

It was bad enough talking about these chumps back in the day. Now we have a new generation can we please forget about the dead wood that did not win fxxk all. We had 2 central midfielders (Lamps+Gerrard) who scored 15 plus a season for there clubs. Most strikers now get nowhere near that. Your telling me Carrick should have forced one of them out ? There was a toxic attitude in the camp. I suspect from too much media scrutiny. They all should have done much better. Only one worth talking about who got the job done was Peter Crouch. I think the point is if Lampard and Gerrard had someone like Carrick sitting behind them to screen the defence then those two could go and do what they're best at. Instead Lampard and Gerrard always had to cover for each other because we were still stuck in the 442 is best for too many years and had no plan b or c. Best example is Sergio Busquets, just sits there, intercepts the ball gives it Iniesta or Xavi before he moved on. Undervalued players that are huge for a football team

Lamps and Gerrard were totally incomparable. Sure, Carrick would've done a better job in CDM but Gerrard could play there too. Furthermore, Gerrard was a physical box-to-box midfield with a world class passing and shooting ability in one player. Lampard was a deep-lying attacking midfielder with the best attacking vision ive ever seen. Defensive liability but that's what Gerrard was for. If Carrick was 5 years younger he'd be on his way to 70+ caps, but he was kept out of the side by two of the 5 best midfielders in the world at the time (the others being Pirlo, Xavi and Iniesta)
