I ate at the restaurant today. It’s super small and lack a proper signage at their restaurant. It’s can be easily miss if you do not pay attention. The com tam is actually good. Recommended. Oddly enough, google map doesn’t exactly pinpoint the restaurant location.

My wife and I have lived in Vietnam of and on since 2016 including a year and a half during the covid19 pandemic. We now have been here for a year and nine months on an investment Visa and plan on staying in Hoi an for ever. We have made alot of Vietnamese friends that are like family and we have friends that live here that are from Canada and Australia as well. The food is fantastic and we are constantly finding new and some really good restaurants!

Vietnam has changed a lot since I first visited with my wife in 2005. With how lawless America is right now, it was nice to be able to walk around at midnight without someone pointing a gun at your face and robbing or even shooting you. A few things I don't like is the corruption, nothing is "legit" until you are forced to pay under the table here. Just recently retiring in Vietnam, I still prefer it over America with all the bad things going on in the US. I am currently staying in Q4, the old ghetto of Vietnam but it is a lot nicer now. I think once the infrastructure is upgraded, it will get even nicer.

Medical care is so corrupted by pharmacies/private insurance/government that everything cost 100000 times the price it'd cost in Vietnam. For example calling ambulance is free in Vietnam, it cost about 3000$ in america. Or something as simple as tax that anyone can do in 5 minutes in Vietnam, tax companies + government corruption made it impossible for any normal human to do taxes, so they have to hire tax consultant companies to do it for them. You can't even paint your house how you want, the corrupted people decided your fucking wall paint for you (Check Homeowner Association segment by John Oliver). "Freedom" in america is a joke. These are just some examples, there are so many thing that government corruption fucked over people in America. The only difference is they call it "lobbying" instead of "corruption" to avoid responsibility and normalize corruption.

Ví dụ như gọi xe cứu hộ thì phải trả tầm 60-70 triệu đồng 1 chuyến, dù có bị bệnh hay không. Việt Nam mình chỉ là ăn vụng còn họ là ăn cướp. Hay nếu bạn gãy tay chẳng hạn, riêng tiền bó bột là 20 triệu, chưa tính tiền thuốc thang, chữa trị đắt gấp cả vài chục lần cái khoản 20 triệu ấy. So với Việt Nam, bó bột, xe cứu thương miễn phí, một hai trăm lót tay bác sĩ thì đáng là bao. Ở mỹ thay vì tham nhũng thì họ dùng từ "vận động hành lang". Bản chất là các chính trị gia nhận tiền của các tập đoàn lớn để họ thoải mái hành hạ/bóc lột người dân. Chữa trị bệnh tật đắt đỏ như vậy là do các nhà bảo hiểm tư nhân phối hợp với các công ty bán thuốc đưa tiền cho chính phủ để thoải mái lộng hành. Mà họ còn làm việc đấy trước thanh thiên bạch nhật, không hề giấu diếm. Đấy chỉ là một mặt thôi, còn rất nhiều các thể loại bóc lột, ức hiếp khác ở mỹ nhờ tham nhũng mà đẻ ra. Buồn cười nhất là ở Mỹ nhiều nơi họ quy định chỉ được sơn tường nhà một loại màu. Nếu không thì mấy ông "Hiệp hội nhà ở" ở Mỹ sẽ phạt tiền. Hiệp hội này bản chất là mấy ông bà già 50-60 tuổi nhưng chức quyền ngang cảnh sát vì họ... đưa tiền cho chính phủ, thích phạt ai thì phạt, trấn lột cưỡng bức một cách công khai mà pháp luật đứng về phía họ.

Yeah particularly the meat. He can bake the bread fresh from scratch in the restaurant since the ingredients are cheap(flour, sugar, salt, oil, yeast, water, etc), but it will definitely add a lot of more work daily as well as more needed equipment like an oven and a dough mixer. I’m not sure if he can find a bakery that can make it for them and deliver it to the restaurant. That would be much easier and better, saving a lot of time. But I can’t imagine being able to make a living, being forced to sell the food very cheap like everyone else. I don’t see that producing a lot of profits/income because of that. Unless he opens by the airport and target American travelers, where he can charge way more for his menu items. I used to owned a pizzeria and a restaurant back in the day in the US and it was a challenge dealing with the amount of work. Again, I can’t see how one can make a good living doing it over there in Vietnam or Thailand or the Philippines and places alike.

Best of luck with the new restaurant. If you are going to experiment with new/modified Vietnamese dishes you should try experimenting with frying Chả Lụa. I am married to a Vietnamese (53 years now) and when we first got married my wife would make Chả Lụa the traditional way by wrapping them in banana leaves and steaming them in a bamboo steamer. One day the bamboo steamer fell apart so she just fried paddies of it. We both liked the fried better than the traditional so that is the way she has been making them ever since.

Your wife must know there's a fried version of Cha Lua. It's called Cha Que and it's as popular as Cha Lua. Que means cinnamon so it's the only added ingredient to the fried version.

I agreed with chef Chad about Vietnamese do well when we are in groups and not alone. For example with football, the whole 11 Vietnamese football players, they can play well with eachother. After the Fall of Saigon... Saigon still lives on. The communist party changed the name to Ho Chi Minh City to remove the previous regime's influence, but the native doesn't give a shit. It may be different on paper, but everyone there still proudly call their home Saigon to this day and for the future. If you ever decide to visit Saigon, I suggest contacting Saigon Hotpot or Saigon Corners, they are student volunteers who can speak English, know all the good places to eat and visit. Basically exclusive tour guide for cheap (they don't take commission fee, just ticket entrance to sites/food). It's perfect for foreigners, even more so if you want to chat to them about stuffs like "where I came from" and they will gladly answers/help. If your parents are still capable of travelling, I'd even suggest taking them as well and have them reconnect with their old relatives. Or just visiting their old places.

he said vietnamese work well together as a team surprised me. Im vietnamese and my personal experience and conventional wisdom indicate that vietnamese generally works well as an individual. when you put 10 vietnamese together you got 10 chiefs and no indian, and they ended up arguing more than work 😂. The younger generation are more open minded and acceptance to new ideas. Not so much with the old school folks, my parents, aunts, and uncles for example would probably ended up killing each other if they have to work together on a project. outside of that, they get along very well.

@@duongglobalbusinessconsulting His film production is really high quality, almost tv production value. No offense meant but some of the video quality in on this Duong channel is not that great. Either the audio levels or low or the editing or transition is a bit uninspired. For example, even in this video, the camera used to record the interview didn't use a telephoto lens to get a sharp zoom capture. The editor just cropped the shot and zoomed in on Chad's face so the video quality looks incredible blurry. I'm just saying that Chad's media production is quite exceptional, and wouldn't hurt to take some ideas from his video making.

If you make the $2600 a month salary which is the minimum wage in California ($15/hour) then you can buy 88 liters of gas a day ($5.16/gallon or $1.36/liter) unlike in Saigon with the monthly average salary of 7M VND you can only buy 12 liters of gas a day. No wonder expats really want to try doing business in VN.

Gas is so cheap in America. In my country it is about 2.50USD a liter.

Yes , gas price is expensive in Finland but Europeans in general don’t drive as much as Americans because the European public transport is better than the USA and country sizes are smaller that US states. Americans depend on their cars more than Europeans who use rather buses and trains.

interesting, went to find some caphe reviews, [ dislike Hoffman from UK, and the snobbish attitude ] , found Chef Chad's video, apparently G7 won [ odd but ok] and went over some of his videos. he is one of the few folks who dared travelled, for the family and future. Another KZbinr , like Chad would be Dustin, these folks dont OVERLY sell the rehash Vietnam is the place to be, but giving honest opinion [ though odd in context , i tend to agree] on certain things. vợ of mine, is from Hanoi, so its pretty goal enlightening to watch and to add on : for any random vietnamese learning english or chef from other places learning their dishes..... i highly recommend giving the book a read : Get better at anything by Scott H Young, and anotther few youtube channels, in english , [ Ryan Doris on flow ] , [ Dr Justin Sung and his other channel , the iCanStudy ] slowly vibe into learning from anything and everything, there will be patterns that make [ Mise en place ] from french aptly puts this into context. And yes, Duong's channel, is a good way for intermediary for any folks curious about perspective and how one can take key insights.
