Bob Reynolds (one of the Saxophonists) said the way a Snarky Puppy session works is they all arrive at a location, then for 4 days they learn 4 new songs each day, mostly "written" by Michael League. He gives them very basic Logic files to get the basic structure. Then the band breaks up into sections where each section fleshes out their parts, how they are going to play it and who is going to play what, then they move on to the next song. A the end of the day the sections all get together again to go over, practice, and firm up what they are doing on that day's 4 songs. This is probably a 12 to 16 hour day. The next day they do it again, then again, then again. Then on the 5th day the band gets together to play through the songs as collectively and individually composed, usually with a placeholder for any solos. All of the musicians have latitude to play what they feel as long as it doesn't break the structure. Then, 6 days after starting the process of learning and building the first song they have a performance with the audience. They do, IIRC, 2-4 performances of the songs from those sessions and that's the album. The "band" is whoever answers League's email with availability for the next session. The most recent one, recorded in Dallas, had, I believe, 4 drummers because they all answered the email. The touring band is much like the recording session band and it is whoever answers the emails. The band is made up of jazz, funk, and gospel musicians. Shaun Martin lost an extended health battle and passed this year. The band was going to get together to do a fund raiser for his health care, but he didn't make it. He was the heart and soul of every project he worked on, was a genius and a really great hang, and he will be sorely missed.

Welcome to the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole; enjoy your stay. Some points to consider: 1. Michael League wrote this on the flight to the Netherlands where this album was recorded (He flew on Aer Lingus). 2. Larnell Lewis was a last minute substitue on drums and learned nearly the entire album ON THE PLANE RIDE OVER by listening to the Logic files Mr. League sent him. 3. This band was formed at North Texas University (formerly North Texas State), which has been a Mecca for jazz instrumentalists for decades. The band currently calls Brooklyn home. 4. The verse is in a slow 5/4 and the refrain is also in 5/4, but twice as fast… League said it’s SP’s version of ‘dub step’… the breakdown leading to Cory Henry s solo is in 4/4 with a rhythmic pattern underneath of 1-2-1-2-1-2-2-2.

@@SwaticanShawn’s response is also because they had already recorded “Sleeper” and Shawn thought his track was going to be the most talked about from the album… then he saw Cory playing out of his mind and knew his would be a distant second to “Lingus”.

Everyone always goes crazy for Cory Henry's solo, and rightfully so, but I feel like what often gets overlooked is how hard the first 4+ minutes are to play. You touched on it at 3:57-yes, it's cohesive, but it's worth pointing out how unbelievably hard it is to be _that_ cohesive when you're dragging those lines the way they are. The whole horn section is deliberately behind the beat _in exactly the same way_, and that is crazy bonkers difficult to pull off.

A cool anecdote about this album is that the drummer, Larnell Lewis, had never played with them before. There was some issue with their regular drummer, and he had to drop out right before the sessions, so Larnell Lewis learned all of the music on the plane ride down to Dallas. Absolutely absurd musicality

Not necessarily one take, but closer to a live album recording. Michael composed the album in essentially real time - sending the band new music almost every night - and worked with the band to arrange the songs during rehearsals with barely a week before recording. THE ENTIRE ALBUM was recorded and filmed in four days of "live in studio with headphones" concerts, and the best versions of each song from each night were chosen to go on the album.
