At this point I think I'm rooting for Ding mainly because he is not as "booked up" as Gukesh; obviously at the top level all Super GMs have a ton of memorization, but its clear that Ding is going off-book WAY earlier than Gukesh which I think is more interesting.

Either Ding has lucked his way into being WCC or he is a majorly underrated mad man who has philosophy somewhere along the lines of "only do what is neccasary". This game was not just a victory. It was a statement. Watching those final 30 minutes was incredible.
@Phantom_Zone3 күн бұрын
No man who reaches the zenith of any sport is there by luck. Ding is no different. The only thing luck did for him was allow him to challenge Nepo. Time and time again, people attributed things to luck that should be attributed to someone. Gukesh isn't there by luck. Ding isn't there by luck. This game is simply a proof to those who said Ding got lucky
@mymsoup3 күн бұрын
@@Phantom_Zone To be fair, the luck that led him to challenge Nepo was pretty insane. Didn't originally qualify for the candidates, lucked his way in anyways after someone got DQ'd. Didn't manage to win the candidates, but Magnus finally made it official that he would not defend his title so he played te championship match as the Candidates runner-up. The match was a disaster, but he managed to edge out Nepo in tiebreaks despite neither player showing their peak strength. The Ding we got as world champion was weaker than the Ding we saw few years before, so it is understandable why people disregard all the other factors and say he's "only there because of luck", even if it's wrong.

@@mymsoup The other salty top players lost to Ding in the Candidates. Ding also beat Nepo in a match. You can say he fell behind 3 times, but he also had to win games to take Nepo to tiebreaks. @JoeARedHawk2753 күн бұрын
@@damiester1Honestly I agree. If Magnus was out of the equation, people wouldn’t be so hasty to call Ding lucky for winning against Nepo. It was not by luck that Ding won. He fought the battles and lost some games, but he won the war against Nepo, showing he was the better of the two. We could just as easily argue that Nepo had some lucky moments as well. At the end of the day, it’s who’s more consistent, and if they’re consistently lucky, that just means they are good.

So far, Gukesh has managed to win out of Ding's blunders. Ding has been extremely unprepared, and it seems like he is struggling with even wanting to play Chess. Even last year, Ding said he has mixed feelings about winning because if he lost the title, he could quit chess. He always lands in time trouble and bad positions, and when he does get a good position he is happy with a draw. Yet, the moment Ding is in trouble, he plays at a world champion level. He didn't win off a blunder, he won by squeezing Gukesh into total submission. This felt like watching Magnus Carlson take on an IM, after a few moves Gukesh had no opportunities the entire game. I’m convinced Ding’s greatest strength is being backed into a corner where he has no choice but to take off the gloves and fight back. People tend to forget to age gap between these incredible GMs, and Ding’s “healthy” experience in precarious situations might just prove to be more valuable than Gukesh’s raw talent - Ding’s knight to Gukesh’s rook, if you will. Fantastic review, and the first match of the tournament that’s got me genuinely excited for the next two.

Well, I loved Fabi-Magnus/Nepo-Magnus much more Especially Fabi Yes, it was not so thrilling and unpredictable But it’s been actually almost the best chess human beings can provide And there still was not “fast draws” Opponents still risked, created troubles. But balanced on the edge of right game and winning game And u saw no major blunders until move 50 U seen players actually been prepared as much as possible, as u see it in other sport Like… If u wanna dynamic, intrigue, risk - u may watch rapid/960/blitz championships. They are awesome. And here u see hardly top 10 level game. Don’t take this wrong. Ding/Gukesh are still beasts. And I get why ppl love such games much more, as an observers But I think that if classic still exists this absurd way, it should represent high competitive, high level, stable psychic, positional masterpieces And other chess formats have to become more popular, for ones, who want more drive But I also get magnus decision extremely well, and think he is personally right
