Yup, pancake was great. I had the pleasure of meeting the band after playing in a small club in Roxbury, Wisconsin. About 60 people there only. I went backstage and Roger Boyd was eating a sandwich. He was so cool!!

My BF’s band opened for these guys back in the 90s and I got to hang out with them before the show. They were very nice guys. No attitude. A year later I’m singing with BF’s band and we did this song! So much fun!! BF passed a few yrs ago and I now have another musician BF. Tried to get them to learn this song. Wouldn’t that be cool if I got to sit in on it?? I’ve sang with them a few times. I miss being in a band.

This band played in my town twice. First time I got to hang out after the show with them for a little acoustic jam session. The second time they played at my local fair and the guitar player and drummer let me ride along and drove me to the gig. Most down to Earth rockers I've ever met and I cherish the time I had the privilege to share with them.

Yes indeed. They are very cool indeed. Met them and hung with them a few times at summer festivals here in WA State. And at the last show they played here, they didn't even go into the "green rooms" they had laid out, backstage. They had a giant bus and Roger had a sweet motorhome. Partied with the fans. It was truly unforgettable.

Saw them in June of 1983 at the old Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. One of the best concerts ever! The Rainbow is now a Walgreens Drug Store but every time I drive by I think of Head East and Big County (November of 1983).

Hello my Rock-N friends. Here's some Champaign IL. Trivia for you. Just the way it happened. I'M sure the members of Head East will agree this Crazy is stuff you need to know. Here goes. In late August, 1969 Gary Richrath from around Peoria IL. and I knew each other from hanging out at a music store called C.V. loyds. Might have been two LL's excuse me. It's been awhile. We parked right near each other got out went into the store Gary plugged a Les Paul into a I think Fender Bandmaster Amp, I plugged a Strat into a Marshall 100 watt 4x12 speaker bottom that had just came into the store the day before. We preceeded to break into a version of the Stars Spangled Banner cranked as lound as possible. Usually C.V. Jr. Ran the store and Gary & I were known for our young & crazy antics. But CV. Sr. Was there came running into the guitar area shut the amps off. Told us to put the guitars back & get out and don't come back for a week. (Why a week I have no Idea) As we were leaving I ask Gary what he was up too and he said he was in town because although they didn't know it yet he was going replace Fiorio aka Duke Tumato. As the guitar player & song writer for REO Speedwagon. I'll get to Head East in a moment just stick with me. Gary was 2 years older than I was but we both had the same Midwest guitar style. He taught me alot R.I.P. Gary. He said hey there's a jam happening down the street a ways Terry Lutrell ( Original Lead vocalist REO) he said Mike Murphy will be there (who don't be fooled actually created the melody line for Riding the Storm Out and sang it when he replaced Kevin Cronin in REO. For a short period of time. I'm writing this to clear the air on some Champaign reality. Kevin Cronin was not I repeat not an original member of REO! Thanks I just had to say it. Terry L. & Mike M. We're both as talented as Kevin not taking anything away from Kevin he's truly a talented musician. Now for Head East. Gary managed to do just what he was there for. He became the guitarist for REO. I had gone to California and ran into Irving Azoff from Champaign IL. Blytham L.T.D. booking agency with Bob Robert Nutt. He barely knew me but as we talked he knew I was one of the boys from. Illinois. I was there to jam an afternoon show at the Trubadore just filling in. It was then that I first heard the name Head East. Irving said REO and Head East were going places and he was going to put Champaign IL. Into Rock-N-Roll history. He said he had Linda Rondstasts. Misspelled sorry, backup band he's going to make them famous (The Eagles) and a whole lot more. Now knowing Irv. as we called him could sell a dead man a watch I believed every word. I had been in L.A. for awhile so When Irving told me even if he can't sign them somebody would I knew Head East. was going places. And they did. It might be only 1 hit but Head East is a part and always will be of Rock History. So to all of the boys from Illinois I tip my hat. Rock-N-Roll would not be the same without you. As for me I took Gary R's advice he gave me in 1973, never sign on the dotted line. Just make a good living at music and manage yourself then No one will own you. So I got lucky I moved to Colorado played 5 nights a week for years at the Ski resorts. Aspen, Summit County, Breckenridge, Steamboat ect. But I owe it all to my friends from Champaign. that helped me lock into the Colorado scene. Oh yeah I almost forgot Pork & The Havana Ducks LoL God Bless ya'll & Keep Rock-N J.D.

Man I loved your story. The first time I saw Head East was the first time I saw REO. It was in January of '77'. In Loves Park IL at the Harlem HS Fieldhouse. Cheap Trick played first then Head East before REO. Great lineup of bands and it was great. We were right up front to the left. Right in front of Rick Nielsen and Roger Boyd. I'm retired and live in Champaign now. Wished I could have been here then. Didn't have the grades or money to go to this fine university here. Love it the area so far.

Larry and Rodger Boyd were my fraternity Bros in Champaign in the 70's. John Schlitt wrorked in the kitchen. They were a great group of guys. I just visited the frat house after 50 years away, and we still had a lot of stories of the old days. REO played on Thursday nights about 3 blocks from our house!

I grew up in Creve Coeur, IL and Mike Somerville lived a few doors down ( actually with his brother Scott and his wife). I would go over to their house with a friend who was Scott’s brother-in-law. Mike would get up in the afternoon and break out a gorgeous acoustic Ovation and jam. Occasionally, you would get people dropping in like Gary Richrath’s ex-wife. Man those were the days in a small unknown town.

The first time I heard this song was in 1976 or 77. I was about 8 years old and we were at our summer cabin in Northern WISCONSIN. We were pulling out of the driveway and i remember the opening guitar. I was mesmerized. Actually, i remember it very distinctly. I even remember pulling out of the driveway, i was in the backseat, hoping my dad would not change the radio station. Ever since then, i have loved this song.i had the pleasure of meeting Roger Boyd in 1991 at a small club near Madison Wisconsin. I even joked sometimes about my goal in life was to own a HEAD EAST T-shirt.

I,ve been a Head East fan since the 70,s, I live in the United Kingdom I read a review of Flat as a pancake bought the album & was hooked from then 2 this day, the original line up with the amazing John Schmitt on lead vocals was awesome but they have maintained that standard with numerous line up changes, great harmonies & great live shows unfortunately I,ve never seen any line up live but I will love this band 4ever. 🤟🤟😎

I actually helped John Schlitt load a couch onto his truck when he was moving to a new residence in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois...I believe it was in 1976. My family and I were visiting a family that used to be our neighbors in Carthage, IL and they just happened to live right next door to John Schlitt. That was a neat experience for me as I was 17 years old.

For those of us who LIVED the 1970's, WE know the past CAN'T be recaptured. There's a BIG DIFFERENCE between having seen bands like Head East, Foghat, Ten Years After, Grand Funk Railroad, Skynyrd back then, and the people who go see(in the 2000's) a ghost of what was and go around saying, "I saw Skynyrd last night." No, you DIDN'T. When key band members die, or can't play anymore, IT'S not the same. I have to hand it to Robert Plant. He hasn't ever seemed to be too interested in making a mockery of what Led Zeppelin WAS and he's to be commended for that.
