Mr. T doing what he did best. I was touched when he and Buddy were grooming and you said he was learning Buddy the ropes on herd leading. And sure enought Buddy is standing in his footsteps and has his own little herd with Belle, Ransom and the donkeys now.

In the herd of 20 I worked with for three years, I noticed they had color clicks. The dark horses would graze together, the whites and grays grouped together, the reds together. The paint would bounce between the blondes and the redheads. Regardless of their breed, they always congregated by colors while casual grazing. I imagine it is a survival technique to make them harder to single out. We did have coyotes and bears.

Excellent play by play herd behavior talk! Refreshing! I love the mention of how secure the mare feels. I feel that way at church because majority of our men there understand how God designed us and are passing it along to other men and their children, not to mention some are armed. I also feel that way at work with 100+ Veteran men there; quite a few who are the "Warrior Gene" type. Laural

Thank you so much for these videos about herd hierarchy behavior!! This was amazing! I learned so much from them now. Thinking back, when I owned horses, too, I also stood and watched them for hours, but now I understand a lot more about their behavior.-to each other and to me. After Watching the videos, I also saw a lot of mistakes, that I have made in the past, 25 years ago. I hope, I did not do to much damage to the poor horses or hurt them?! Not on purpose, but because of "knowing no better". I hope you will make more videos about herd behavior, they are really great, Greetings from Vienna, Astrid G.

Been enjoying your videos, including this one. My horses and ponies have run in sheds and that's it.....doesn't get bitterly cold here, and a deep shed gets them out of the wind and the rain. Don't like the idea of stalling horses at all....would I like to live most of my life in a space that , relative to my size, is about the size of a bathroom? One thing; my horses know that I am top horse. They shove at me, they are going to get backed up fast. Often, all you have to do is face up to them, lower your head (indicative of being angry with horses) hunch your shoulders, lean in a little and they will correctly read that as "She is ticked!" and stop. Like Mr. T, if a horse shoves me or bangs into me, they get the message fast that this is not allowed, and usually without me so much as touching them. The trick, I think, is to actually NOT get angry, just act angry. Blow off a little adrenaline; they can smell that. And another thing; make sure that what you do is fair. Whacking a horse that hasn't done anything because you're ticked at someone else just makes you a bully. Horses know when they have transgressed and saying, "I DON'T THINK SO!" will usually stop my guys cold. Horses, like most animals, have a good idea of what's JUST and isn't. Be just about correction, do it immediately--you don't correct them fast and how do they know what they did wrong?--and keep control of yourself, and they'll get the idea.

It’s very interesting how the paint mare had lasting issues from not being brought up properly-just like humans who are abused. The first 7 years of a human’s life determines so much of how they’re treated in the world, and it seems to be likewise for horses except in a shorter amount of time because they mature faster.

I have seen the snaking behavior. But I have also observed a low head while moving forward between two buddies. The lower horse does this behavior when playing with the higher horse buddy. I do not know what it means. I am working on it to try and figure it out. Some say it is relaxation. I don't think so. It is not focused determination like snaking mares. It has the look of play, but play with purpose.

Man I would love to throw Mr. T in my heard right now. In my horse heard the top gelding who was number 1 passed away. He was very old but he was number 1 for all his life and was GREAT at it like Mr. T. Well he passed and the girl decided to buy a Mare to ride now and for some reason that mare has gone up to number 1. Its actually weird. I never seen a mare dominate the geldings like she does 24/7 but I think its because when the top dog died the heard was sorta left in a mess and know one is taking the full lead yet so she's messing with everyone. I WISH I had Mr. T to teach her a lesson. A few geldings tried to claim her and she gets very bitchy like "I'm not listening to you" which she should listen to at least 1 of them but she's not. Mr. T would straighten her right out lol

Maybe Mr. T moves further from the herd because he is a mustang and had to patrol an area? You would think a horse raised with very little danger or dispute over territory would not feel the need to move in familiar pasture like that, but Mr. T. or other stallions would need to watch and listen for more danger, food competitors, other horses to fight or recruit, or just better pasture/resources for his herd. A more wild behavior that he kept with him even in a smaller pasture. At first it seems odd that he would just walk to the other side of the pasture, but this would maybe explain it. He is a lovely horsey My other theory is that he was searching the ends of the earth for an escape from buddy

Mr. Gore, a friend of mine has a new horse that doesn't like her face touched. she gets flinchy. I am thinking she was maybe mistreated her face. how would you deal with that?
@CSykes-yv7mg9 жыл бұрын
+Edward Sarah Matthews Try NOT touching her face. Rub on her neck. Work your way, slowly, from her shoulders up towards her head. The SECOND SHE GETS TENSE, back off just a tiny bit. Also go from the bottom of the neck and work your way up towards her jaw, when she is relaxed with that, stroke her muzzle. The trick is to advance, back up, advance, back up, whenever she tenses. And you stay relaxed . Try to make the whole process as boring as possible! . Do it in a couple of sessions. Horses sometimes need a little time to process information. I had an old mare who had never been touched except to "ear her down" to medicate her. WOULD. NOT. LET. ME. TOUCH. THOSE. EARS! Took me two days, a few minutes a day, to work up from the halfway up her neck to touching her ears...and the trick is to back off just a bit when they tense up. You don't want to trigger that fear reaction in the first place, if you can avoid it.

When the owner of the barn I go to moves the horses around to different pastures with different horses (this only happens ones or twice a year) we have to watch them to make sure they don't fight, if they do we separate them. Should we not separate them should we let them fight and work it out Or would they hurt each other?
@pdjdjdjdjd55008 жыл бұрын
Bella Southburg Its nature and instinct of a horse. Its how horses communicate and show dominance to be lead horse. It is best not to separate them as this would interrupt the process. Again, it's horse nature.

Rick, I gotta tell ya, as good a horseman you are, as ignorant you seem to be when it comes to herd dynamics! In all videos I've watched so far when Mr. T and Buddy are together, there is no way Mr. T is the lead horse. *gg* If you want to know why, you can ask me (I know you don't want to hear anything you didn't ask for). If not, just keep them pink glasses on and keep up the otherwise good work ;-) Cheers, B.
