The good ol' ghost town of Stateline! That pass gets pretty gnarly beyond that heading west. Sadly, the mill up on the hill burned to the ground a few years back. I'm actually super surprised at that washout area before the dam. All of that was intact the last time I went out there. Must all be due to the heavy rains after the wildfire. I have some awesome pics of the mill a year or two before the burn. Don't know if you've seen one of the big mills west of Pioche or the one by Milford, but it was the same type of blue corrugated sheetmetal construction as those and it was massive. I was really devastated to hear it burned shorty after I visited. it was a real gem.

It must be nice to trust your bike with such remoteness. Whats your plan for a middle of nowhere break down? What concerns me is being 30 miles up an off road trail where a tow would be improbable at best.

I bring a pair of hiking shoes with me, walking out in a pair of SG-12s ain't gonna happen. I once ran out of gas in the middle of the Everglades, had a new boat and planned poorly. As I drifted with the wind deeper into the mangroves I thought about had bad my death was going to be...thirst, eaten alive by the bugs and so on. Then I remembered I had brought a handheld VHF radio and was able to Mayday the Coastguard in Key Largo which in turn got me a rescue. Yeah, walking out the desert isn't as bad as what I thought might happen to me if I disappeared in those mangroves so I don't worry too much about it.

great vid PoG..esp like the drone footage. what map app do you use..? I use Gaia GPS, no cell needed, it down loads the map to phone, the gps does not need cell..an arrow shows your exact location and roads in your area mapped..anywho coolness :0)

I use Gaia also, I hadn't downloaded the map area prior to riding. Fantastic app! Once I had service again it was clear to see the road continued all the way to Great Basin so I'll be returning to finish the ride! Thank you for watching!

Ive got a question seeing as you own both the DR650 and XT250, Which would you say is better for a new rider? Im looking to start riding soon with the goal of doing BDR's in the AZ, NM, and UT area. Is the 650 too big for newbie? Is the 250 okay on highways in a major city like Pheonix? Would something like a XT225 work better for a beginner due to the lighter wieght? Thanks for all the videos, I appreciate getting to see the bikes in action!

The XT250 is ideal for a new rider, not intimidating and more importantly you'll want to ride it. It's light, nimble and still will comfortably move you along at 55 mph. However, the 250 probably isn't the best bet for major highways. Can't go wrong with a DR650, in stock form its around 370 lbs and would be fine on the highways but you're going to feel that weight in the backcountry when you lay it down. The biggest 'possible' problem with the 650 is seat height for a new rider but you can lower the bike. If you can, test ride both.
