A few years ago around Christmastime I was sitting in a mall parking garage waiting for my sister to finish holiday shopping, listening to the radio absent-mindedly. This came on and I started singing along, it being such a favorite of mine. A random man came up and complimented my singing with a smile. I likely went flushed with embarrassed appreciation as I thanked him; he was off. That moment was one of the moments I felt my most warm inside, in all my life. Moral of the story is to compliment people who look like they’d be caught off guard by it. I’ve done it ever since I realized how good it felt.

I always dated the same type of guys and every time I would get my heart crushed. After my last breakup I decided I would love myself enough to look for someone outside of my normal when the time came. Then out of nowhere my best friend of 6 years called me while drunk and confessed to 6 years of love and admiration. I probably had like 3 mental breakdowns processing it before going on dates with him. Fast forward 10 months, he proposed to me in my mom’s hospital room 4 days before she passed. He is my everything and I regret nothing. ❤️

Typical story ..for me its hard and emasulating to love a girl when she doenst choose you the first time- much less has you as a friend and chooses others multiple times over!. I admire your best friend/ fiance. I don't think i can do that. Its either yes / no. and I move on. From my experience women on the whole generally takes that same approach- decide up front. No straddling of unrequited love.

I think a lot of people mistook her meaning when this song came out, when she said "Your my best friend, best friend with benefits" she was talking about someone she was in love with, and that's how she described how she felt, but I think a lot of people mistook it to mean a casual sex partner who is just a friend, I don't think that was what she meant at all.
@trevorwright98013 жыл бұрын
Was explaining that to my 2 grown up daughters, yesterday
@hamonangansiagian59413 жыл бұрын
yes, you are right. the meaning of that now famous 'friend with benefits' has changed from when Alanis used it for this song. The latter meaning (casual sex partner...) is what applies nowadays
@lourdesfarmer2602 жыл бұрын
I fell in love with a long term friend. Never in my mind I thought of him that way, ( at one time I thought he was so annoying) and it was so awkward cause his wife was a good friend of mine.. year after she passed away, no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t keep myself from loving him.. He treated me in a way I have never been treated, I was always so independent and he came in being amazing husband and father to my kids. I love him and his babies with all my heart 💜 When listening to this it brings me back to when we first started exploring with each other. 😊😅we was so confused, well I was he says he new what he wanted.

Exactly! People have to always think its sexual. It can't ever be I loved thos person with everything in me.
@ampdals2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was that they mistook her meaning. I just think the phrase was just so well suited to be used for it's current meaning that it was adopted for that purpose despite the difference from how Alanis meant it. Honestly, though, it seems to me the current meaning isn't so inconsistent with this songs usage. This song is talking about a "best" friend with benefits. You could make the argument that's why Alanis's usage included love.

Everytime I hear this song I think of my boyfriend and I. Our relationship is described in this almost to the letter. From the way this song was written, it feels like the song was written for and about him and I. I've never been so understood by anyone until I met him. He wanted to be with me for such a long time but I was stubborn. He got through that stubborness and reached into my core.

Good lyrics, had to turn it up as some loud car drove by earlier on today. Aside from that probably would help me with being shy and with both me and my special lady friend, Kate Moore Bennett of Seattle, Washington, who lives about 30 minutes - 1 hour away from me, but if the Lord's willing, we'll meet up with each other, in person face to face, in public & at a public place like normal people ☺.

This is the way I feel about my boyfriend. He treats me like a princess. I'm still getting used to it. I was in denial that I loved him but he always knew he loved me. It took me a while to realize I love him and I thank him for his patience. He always opens doors for me. He is the best listener and best friend I've ever had. When I finally realized how I truly feel about about him, I told him and we started dating. Sometimes I ask myself, "What took me so long?" I truly think he's the one I'm going to marry and spend the rest of my life with even though 5 years ago, I didn't feel marriage was in the cards for me. I was happy being single and I never even thought my name and the word marriage even being in the same sentence but here I sit picturing him and I being together for the rest of our lives. I'm 35 and he's 30 but he's truly a gentleman. He is everything I could ever want in a man.
