@charpharp The best smoothing tool is the skin of your fingers. To prevent the clay to sitck to your finger wet your fingers in a bowl of water befor smoothing. Alchohol or lighter fluid will desolve the surface of the clay so it can be smoothed with a brush.

Thank you for your kind comments! I think I used a little more than 2 blocks of clay, each 2 lbs. Working a few hours a day, I think it took about two weeks to finish it. Yes, I did use water at one point to smooth the clay, although at the end I decided a rough texture will look better. I haven't sealed this one yet, but it still looks in good condition. To preserve the oil from evaporating or for easier dusting the sculpture, I would suggest covering the sculpture with Elmer's Glue.

Oh no.. you've only gone and inspired me to have a go. I can sense there will be lots of swearing coming from me during this process but I can't wait. Your series of video how to is visually delicious. Happy you didn't add music :D But wish there was a little bit of you talking to support your video. Its not the end of the world though because you give a very real sense of tactile instruction in detail. Thank you so much.. I'm off to play..! You're an incredible inspirer in this medium :D :D

lol...You are very kind to post such encouraging comments on my videos! I'm glad you are among the ones that prefer no music track than a silly background noise behind the video. If I could speak coherently while I was sculpting, I would. I guess I could add my voice at the end of editing the video and even edit that voice-over to make sure it doesn't have a lot of pauses and ummm stuff, but that requires more time. I'll do it one day. :)
@valkerry24
@valkerry24 10 жыл бұрын
I really wouldn't worry too much about getting the voice over right. Or, having long periods without talking in between little golden nuggets of instruction. I'd keep it relaxed and real. Not talk when you don't want or don't have to. Your visual instruction is amazeballs. Verbal instructions when it comes naturally is so much better than talking for the sake of it all the way through.. You are so kind to share this on KZbin at all.. thanks again :D

@mellodge
@mellodge 10 жыл бұрын
Clay does not air dry it has to be fired in a kiln. If this is not do-able you have to cast it in a different material. Make sure you seal water based clay with shelac if you are going to mold it for casting, before it has chance to dry out. Oil based clay cannot be fired, it is meant for molding and casting. Roma clay should be sealed with a clear sealer before molding as the sulpher in the clay prevents silicone from curing. It is better to use sulpher free clay.

+Juan Cardona : as a matter of fact: you can burn this model: but you will have to make a plaster mould with notches and strips. After drying your plaster, divide your plaster in two halves, open it, remove the clay. You then have a mould where your hot wax goes inside. Reassemble now the wax model and correct where necessary. You have a model ready for casting in bronze.
@Liberty_Valance

+GMwebstudio That is right! Plus a few more steps. Here is how Nano Lopez explain the steps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnWkl32dgK6Aarc

@GMwebstudio 9 жыл бұрын
+3DworlD2 : First of all, I admire your work. You make people see perspectives and proportions. Secondly, your able hands make the magic of making a piece of art. A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Sorry for my English but I'm from Belgium where we speak and write Dutch... Of course, I could not explain the whole process of burning. Indeed there are steps I skipped. I, not like Nano Lopez do not use silicon based mouls: so fragile... So or I use clay or for 1/1 pieces I use wax and sculp it. And then begins the art of using plaster... ha! For clay models the same: make a plaster mould, divide it in pieces (minimum two halves) and start plastering again. After demoulding: fill the negative mould with wax, demould et voilà: ready for the bronze! A few steps I skipped. Thank you for the great work you perform!
