The S1 main crank pins were crank like a crank shaft towards the axle for a shorter stroke , + 84 inch drivers for the S1 against the T1 none cranked main and 80 inch drivers . The S1 was supposed do be able to produce 7000 up at 110 mph . On paper T1 was capable of 120 mph. ; S1 was capable of 153 mph . The world's first bullet train . Love the air HORN. Thank you so much for the technical information of S1, Robert. S1 was definitely the world's first bullet train!
@robertswickard12625 жыл бұрын
@@Jones3DModelingClub I really had to dig into the info about the main crank pins , it showed them cranked in some builder photos , it was accompanied with a video with a shop worker showing the installation of the pins into the main driver rims , than the tires , than a block of wood placed on the pin to protect them until the rods were installed . Would have been quit a sight to see her on the "RACE TRACK " across Ohio and Indiana Those pins were cranked about 1 and 3/4 inches towards the axle center , and 5/64 of an inch off center for vavle legging at speed , which in a half revolution of the driver is around 3 and 1/2 inch shorter in piston stroke. Technical data showed her capable of 153 mph but 140 definitely fesable when you consider the losses , boiler scale in the tube sheet , coal quality , wind resistance , temp. ( stiff journal boxes ) in cold weather, empty , half loaded or full loaded passenger cars . I have a cousin that works at Rocky Mountian Construction ( roller coaster manufacturer and rebuilding ) these are some of the things that go into his work , the losses . You measure around the length of the wheel tire , that gives you the distance the wheel travels in 1 revolution in track length . ( WHEEL RPM ) HP to the cylinders , piston stroke length . everybody goes by traction effort , but that's only a measurement for starting a train , Factor of adhesion , a measurement of horse power to weight to size of wheel , and putting that power to the railhead :: a T1 had a factor of 3.75 ( with poppet vavles ) 3.83 with walscherts vavle gear which showed a weight to HP problem . PENNSY tested the T1 and it showed 6550 HP at 100 mph S1 showed 7100 HP at 120 mph. The Pennsy FF1( BIG LIZ )showed 4500 HP , 1hour overload to 7880HP ( you can draw more power out of the overhead catanary wires , had 140, 000 lbs traction effort at 10.3 mph and a factor of 6.1 , which is why she was not duplicated , way to much power in one package , same with the GM10 of 1976 , 10,000 HP but could overload for one hour was 18,000 HP , 138,000 lbs of TE but a factor of 7.2. again way to much for a single unit . That's why all the roads have settled on 4500 HP and a factor around 4.3 and in an A C locomotive ( SD 70ace ) can get up to 180,000 TE . You can tell , I love getting into the technocal , structural data of locomotives , and the most bazaar was the steam turbo electric locomotives of the C&O #500 class steam turbines , ( class M1 which was not really classed that by the C&O ) .. wheel arrangement was not a 4 - 8 + 4 - 8 - 4 But was a 2 - C1 + 2 - C1 - B with a bed frame from the cab area under the firebox and only down about half way towards the back . On each end was a truss bridge frame suspended over the ends . From front to back . Air pumps in the nose , coal hopper in front with stoker motors on the front bridge truss frame , ::::: cab , firebox , boiler , smokebox , all on the bed frame ,( the Firefox was on skid plates resting on top of the frame for expansion ) ::::: turbines , genarators , electrical cabinet on the back truss bridge frame .. And then we have the goofy #80 UP coal fired gas turbine . Let's grind up coal into a fine powder , burn it in the turbine buckets and blow it into a jet engines turbine blades and find out how long it takes to grind down the blades and shoot the blades into outer space . UM ,,OK Thanks Bob S.

If you read up on the S1, its major design flaw was that the weight of the engine bore down more on its six wheel front and rear trucks. Engineers would complain about the S1 slipping and loss of tractive effort from the driving wheels due to this flaw. S1 would get a slow start until up to speed.
@rayhankazianga68172 жыл бұрын
@@freshwolfff2562 The Big boy produced a ridiculous amount more tractive effort than the S1, and a loss of tractive effort when pulling a train is a pretty big deal. Record for electric French TGV is 574 km/hr or 357 mph. The 2 power cars were producing 26,000 hp to achieve that speed. So, if you want to go really fast, electric is the only way to do that. The only other way would possibly be with a gas turbine setup. Steam or diesel electric has too low power to weight ratio to go that fast.

Why is it that the s-1 have the chuff sound like a plane?
@TheBroughamGamer5 жыл бұрын
I believe that this is caused by the piston count setting of the locomotive. Most engines in trains even the articulated and more than 4 cylinder engines use a 2 piston chuff noise in settings for realistic chuff. Adding the extra piston count seems to double the sound on locomotives. I tried this for the first time on the y6b DLS model. Trying to get the real settings I changed the piston setting from 2 to 4 which caused this to happen. If anyone knows if what I said isn't what caused this I would love to know the real reason. Your welcome.;-)
@TheBroughamGamer5 жыл бұрын
I also realize that the engine chuff sound itself can be set to 2 pistons even if the engine recorded has 4. The effect of doubling this setting can be the reason for this.

Why were these not preserved? The T-1 wlii be resurected through "DNA". The S-1 ? Why would anyone scrap that? I am an Eastern Airlines Brat. One way to get someone like me on a train is to have locomotives like those pulling it.

Intentionally They Couldn't keep it running, and it had so many problems. The S1's design was pure trash because of the streamlining T1's are a different story, they looked nice but they couldn't keep it since it had VIOLENT amounts of wheelslip. So they scrapped them all. 6110 and 6111 were prototypes but those are gone as well. But they are rebuilding the T1.

@@Inactivefr610 The violent wheel slip issue is a railfan myth. Both the C&O and N&W tested the PRR T1 and noted no such problems, even on mountain grades. In fact, the N&W stated the T1 were equal to their J Class 4-8-4s up to 80 mph, then above 80 mph, the T1 just ran away from the Class J. The reason they were scrapped so fast is the PRR decided to buy diesel-electrics for their passenger service before the T1 was even delivered! Basically, the T1 was a locomotive without a long term job before they even came into service. The PRR ran them just long enough to justify the expense of building them, then took them out of service and they were scrapped. This was true for many late steam era locomotives. Diesel-electric production and technology improved to fast, that many late model steam were out of a job within years of starting service.

We treasure any suggestion and criticism, but don't accuse us of cheating without providing a single evidence. PRR S1 #6100 was built with an air horn installed in 1939, instead of a steam whistle. We used a modified engine e-spec for a steam locomotive from the original model creator in this video.
