Heading Out Bush To Muster Sheep | Mustering Sheep Via Motorbike & Drone In South Australia

It hasn't been mentioned much but we have had sheep on agistment in some pretty rough country North East of Peterborough, South Australia. Today is the day we head out to muster them so we can bring them home to greener pastures. We give the DJI Air 2s drone a go to see how effective it is when mustering.

I’m currently working on Mount Victor station just north of Yunta, after having a plane come in to help us muster for shearing, a good bit of drone assistance was good to watch

Arid Yup.. but beautiful country too.. love that sort of scenery.. nearly as good as the Mallee.. gee those washaways would be interesting on those times when there is a big wet.. Great Vid.. never seen a drone at work on muster, Appreciated Henry.. Just on a 100 years ago, my great grandfather had 16,000 acres under lease in salt lake country and it always amazed me that they, with just their horses, could muster stock in those conditions.. I guess with 7 daughters and 5 sons, they could field a few nags to round up a mob LOL

Good video. I think drones are the way of the future for farming. For mustering you showed they work. I saw in the USA they are spraying corn and soybean fields with drones now. All you need is a big enough drone and good battery life I reckon. Saves a lot of wear and tear on people and equipment especially in country like that. Still, I will miss mustering with the dogs if it does come about.

Kelpies aren't a big fan of the drone by the looks 😂. Pretty hard country out there drone be very handy

Any sheep is going to be nervous with a black goat one coming in behind it. Probably thought it was going to get fleeced. Best don't go there. The drone worked well. Any thoughts about fitting a siren / speaker to the drone to help herding? Maybe play Guy Sebastians new album to scare them along.

Yeah something like that would work well especially if you were using a drone a lot. My drone is more for filming so not sure I could do that. There would be purpose built drones for mustering that would do a much better job I reckon.

Yes as a frequent traveler across South Australia in my younger days I learnt about Goyders line when you see the remains old buildings they came they cropped and a few years later it stopped raining so they left it to grazing

I was amazed at how the vegetation changed when driving in to Burra. It was interesting to learn about the Goyder line on that trip. Are you allowed to muster the goats? They are making some good money for little effort.

Yes, we aren't far away from Goyders Line which is why rainfall is often hit and miss. Feast or famon as I like to say. Any yes, the owners of the property get in a specialist crew to muster the goats. They're not easy to get into yards.

Great video Henry, love to see the livestock side of the farm as well. Please make a video where we can see the dogs on the job. I am so facinated by sheep hearding with the help of dogs. Off topic for this video: on your old spray truck, there was something on the outer end og the boom that looken like a bucket dropping big globs of something pink. I suppose this is a marker, but why was it dropping big globs? Was it some kind of foam? Another offtopic, how is the interwiewing your wife?

We have a bit of sheep work coming up so hopefully I will have some time to catch a bit of the action. Yes, the old spray truck had a foam marker on the outer edge of the boom because it didn't have GPS. It dropped big blobs of foam so you knew where to steer. As for the interview... yes, we will get there one day soon 😉

It's a DJI Air 2S. Not really the perfect drone for mustering but gets the job done. Something with a bit better battery range would be better

Haha I've been telling the old man that it sounds like crap. He just says it's alway sounded like that. Yeah, nah, don't think so. Oil change and a valve adjustment would probably be ideal I reckon.
