Two comments: 1) with the trolling motor stowed like it was, your compass was getting fairly close to the magnets in the electric motor. That is what likely started to throw off your compass. I'm betting if you put your motor in a deployed position, the motor magnets will be below and away from the heading sensor. 2) I found that playing around the front of the boat with a compass just like in the video, getting anywhere near the winch on the trailer caused the compass to go totally nuts. But chances are if you are out on a lake, the heading sensor won't have an issue with the winch like it does in the garage. :) Trying to select a mounting location with the boat on a trailer may not be the best way of going about it.

Question your motor was not down. Your not going to use the motor with the puck with it in the up position. If the motor is down it should not effect the puck. Is there some other interference up front?

What type of enclosure are you storing your boat in?

Nice trick with the compass. Mine have to be plugged on the 12v battery

Arent you supposed to mount parallel with the v of the boat, not angled with the arrow pointing toward the bow.
@jonathanl53165 жыл бұрын
Thats what they say in the manual

I was thinking the same thing when he said to 'point it toward front of boat' I immediately scrolled to comments. I would have angled it to parallel with front of boat since it is installed to the side of center.

It's supposed to in line with keel of the boat so it "knows" true forward direction and compares it to the position of the steering head on the motor. The calibration process solves any constant and consistent interference but the reality is, the puck is "supposed" to be mounted back near the boat's helm yet every video you see on the subject has it being mounted at the bow. It's shown as such in the installation manual so I don't know how so many people got started incorrectly by doing this. I just bought an Ultrex and am guilty of that myself. I'm actually changing that today, though even though the system performed flawlessly yesterday on it's maiden voyage.

When install do I need to use a inline fuse with it? Can I just hook straight to the battery? I just got my new Minn kota Ulterra today. I just sub!
@thebassstalkers62606 жыл бұрын
Lee Sirlee nice. The heading sensor just hooks up to the graph that is where it gets it’s power from. No fuse required.

@@thebassstalkers6260 How would it turn off? With the compass it seem like it's not working right for me or I'm just doing it wrong?
@thebassstalkers62606 жыл бұрын
Lee Sirlee it turns off when your graph turns off. To check that it’s functioning properly is easy. If you are on your chart plotter screen even with no movement to your boat you should still have a black line coming out the front of your boat on the screen. You can also hit menu twice and go all the way to your network tab. Go to your unit and tab over to gps. You should have two options. 1 will be internal and 1 is external. You want the external.
@thebassstalkers62606 жыл бұрын
Lee Sirlee the compass is only used to find out where to mount your heading sensor. The compass will tell you if your getting interference from the magnetic fields put off by your trolling motor

@@thebassstalkers6260 Since I got the Ulterra. I couldn't use my old front fish finder. As of right now I dont have any fish finder on the front. Can i still use that same power line and will it still turn off? It's best to mount it in the front of the boat?

Do I need a heading sensor to use spot lock? I'm not sure I understand its function. What if I dont plan to network the trolling motor with a chartplotter and just want spot lock?

It looks like you mounted it crooked to me, eyeballing it from the front is pretty tough, you really need to mark and measure in the boat to get it square. That being said are you happy with it? Does it do what you wanted?
@thebassstalkers62607 жыл бұрын
Scott Carder it’s strait. Works really good. You should definitely get one if your in the market.
@ronlarson59755 жыл бұрын
heading sensor should be mounted as far away from trolling motor as possible it will do a better job when on spot lock mine is in back of boat then powered from under dash with rocker switch
@thebassstalkers62605 жыл бұрын
ron larson yeah the one for my ultrex is behind the drivers seat. The one for the graphs really don’t matter as long as they are not affected by the trolling motor. A lot of people have 3. 1 up front for the front graph, 1 for there trolling motor in the back and one in the back for the console graph.
