Certainly an enjoyable addition to my morning cuppa coffee. Loved the dichotomy of coal and solar. Well done. Fair winds.

Hi Mike, we find that side of things fascinating, glad that you do too. The canals up here are beginning to be used commercially again which is great to see.

My boat Lazy Days was built in Castleford way back in 1930 at Smith and Son Boat yard, they were also timber merchants. In the next 10 years she made her way south and ended up on the River Thames in 1940, where she was gathered up by the Tough Bros and went to Dunkirk for 3 days and then came back full of troops, So she is one of the infamous Dunkirk little Ships. She stayed in the navy for rest of the war working on mine patrol of the Thames estuary. I bought her in 1995 and kept on the Thames as a live aboard for two years, and then moved her to the River Medway. In 1998 my mate Bill and I decided to take her home and spent 3 weeks sailing up the east coast, calling in at Shotley, Lowestoft, Grimsby up the Humber to Hull and Goole. Along the Aire and Calder to Castleford where we moored up the other side of a boat yard, walked up the road a little way and found a pub. The landlord greeted us and we told him about the boat, the yard we just passed was where LD was built, he took us to the yard and introduced us to the new owners, they now maintained tubs that are used to transport coal, a number would be towed along the canal and would just be towed round bends etc. clattering against the side walls of the canal, we had a couple come by us and they make a hell of a din. We were featured in the local paper, and were invited to drinks at the British legion. Called in at the museum the only records they had were of the timber yard. So we gave them copies of LD history and a couple of weeks later were contacted by a lady whose father had worked at the boat yard and had photos of the boat built before and after LD. On the return journey we moored at the Goole waterway museum open day, of course we broke out the full set flags "dressed all over" Including the Admirals flag the Cross of St George which we have a warrant to fly when 2 or more boats are in company, special days, etc. The curator picked me up on that and I replied that she had a Dunkirk Little Ship in her museum, in fact she had a silver model of Sir Malcolm Campbell's yacht Blue Bird that was built in Goole. Three of his boats went to Dunkirk and I've sailed on them all. The trip was a great adventure but sadly in 2010 I had to sell Lazy Days, thankfully she has gone to a lovely couple who have renovated her. Please keep your videos coming, love your down to earth presentations. BS

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to post your story about Lazy Days, it's fascinating. How lovely that you were able to make the journey back to Castleford with her. What a great record history to have about your boat and I bet your glad to know that she is still in safe hands.

The information about the interesting places left and right of the canal are great. I follow you in google and always find more interesting things. The interior of the boat looks good, not like a dark cave. tnx

Another good vlog T&T, oh, and O, and P :) I love the industrial heritage and have been on the Aire and Calder when the big coal barges were still taking coal to Ferrybridge. That was quite scary to share the water with them! Looking forward to the next vlog!

If you carry on past the new junction to Goole there are still three pans in the water along with tug Wheldale and a Jebus. And if its on a saturday why not call along to the No5 coal hoist.

Ahhh....That was their nickname! Phil (NBH) had told me, but I'd forgotten! (Sorry Phil!). The first time one came round the corner, my usual casual, relaxed attitude to steering suddenly became quite manic!

Sad to see power stations closed , am sure one day we will wish we still had them and the coal mines to fall back on when the gas runs out
