You only apply once you've been accepted, so it's fair, it's not broadcast and it's not a scholarship so not linked to a particular subject or talent, or keeping your grades above a certain level. Literally anyone can apply, you just have to do a good interview, even if you fail the exam, you will likely get on the waiting list and then an offer if you have a good interview, they aren't hard, they want to know who people are, what they are interested in etc. Basically, if a private school has charitable status, they have to, legally, offer a certain number of bursaries. It's not as elitist as you think. I'm not saying it's a better education, it depends on the school, but the class sizes are so much smaller. There is a choice. Let's hope they law isn't changed thanks to the tax on private school fees. Talk about wanting to screw up a generation!

Its the uk nomenclature, Asian refers to anyone from asia, i.e. pakistan, india or east asia. Much of what is now termed the middle east is actually asia minor. I think it arose in the uk when India and Pakistan seperated, there were already so many of both populations in the uk, and notably fewer east asians that a blanket term was needed for the ethnicity, as the culture of an individual was hard for most Britons to distinguish, and calling someone from Pakistan, Indian, and vice versa was incredibly offensive. As people from east asia became more common in the uk this has caused confusion for sure but actually what plays out is that people actually apply effort to getting the locality correct, i.e. they wont say Asian or even East Asian, or oriental, they'll say Korean, Chinese etc. Sorry if that offends but we still would have the issue of differentiating between Indian and Pakistani, which especially now would cause dramatic and possibly violent reactions if you get it wrong.
