I'm from the Philippines and yes this is considered a national disgrace. We suspect that the navy sailors were under orders not to fight and cause an international incident. It's called exercising "maximum tolerance". It sucks. This policy works with civilian rioters and looters, but not with military encounters such as this. The Filipinos were armed with M4 rifles they should have at least used them by firing warning shots over the bow or at the hull if the harassing sea crafts that got near. In a situation such as this its difficult to draw the line as to what is permissible and what is not permissible. (A few years ago Philippine coast guard sailors were criminally charged and convicted of homicide for firing upon Taiwanese fishermen who violated Philippine territorial seas off Cagayan). What is clear though is that the Filipinos were unprepared for this type of incident. They should have anticipated in advance that this confrontation would happen and prepared accordingly, with non lethal weapons such as sticks, pipes, pepper spray, rocks empty bottles, golf balls, ping-pong (table tennis balls) balls loaded with gun powder and ball bearings (anyway ping pong is the national sport of China lol), which we call locally as "pillbox" bombs that explode on impact with shrapnel. In reserve, if things got rough, there should be some knives, bolos, and cheap locally made revolvers called "paltik" which fire 22 LR and 38 spl ammo, to use if necessary or to intimidate and throw overboard in the sea when the inspectors arrive, for plausible deniability. This type of physical encounter happens all the time between Indians and Chinese at the Himalayan disputed border, and the Indians always beat the shit out of the Chinese with long sticks - and pure guts. This type of discretionary warfare is akin to a big city gang rumble and should be treated accordingly with the same attitude, weapons and method. Also I recommend letting our convicted criminals who are jail gangs from in prisons, grant them amnesty or pardon on condition that they will go there an fight, no holds gang warfare style. Except this time instead of being arrested they will be given medals by the government. 😅🤜🤛

My own opinion with the pertaining the comparison of U.S' help to Ukraine & Iran which is not all out defense but only a support, i think it wouldn't be the same because the reason behind that Ukraine & Iran has no mutual defense treaty nor an allie of any org.
