During our May webinar, the Headstream Learning Hub dove into cultural wealth and its profound implications for young people. In this webinar, we explored what cultural wealth means and how it manifests in the tapestry of youth experiences.
We were privileged to have our discussion led by our panelists: Sidrah Durrani, Sabrina Abdalla, Bre’Lynn Lombard, Cynthia Arenas, and José Caballero. Together, we discussed the connection between cultural wealth and youth mental well-being, recognizing the impact of embracing one's cultural identity on overall health and happiness. The key takeaways from our webinar were:
💡We explored ways to empower and not exploit systematically excluded voices, such as: creating safe, honest spaces, not tokenizing them, and incorporating their perspectives into the DNA of the work.
💡 We identified steps to increase the cultural wealth of youth in technology and innovation, like: creating spaces specifically tailored to systematically excluded communities, and holding lived experiences to the same regard in which we hold professional experiences.
💡 We discovered approaches to reimagine mental well-being, including destigmatizing the conversation, breaking barriers, and increasing accessibility to resources and information.
