On the subject of people achieving their goals I sometimes wonder what are all these top mathematicians and physicists going to do when they manage to discover the theory of everything. Will one of them say. Well that is that sorted out then. Lets all go down to the pub. (actually I think with this one it is rather like Douglas Adams and his fantastic science fiction parable about deep thought and the number 42 - a lot of the time when we ask really profound questions we are not even aware precisely what it is that we are asking we are all still so primitive and backward)

The world is not enough. The title of a James Bond Movie. James Bond was a boarder and very unfortunately, even with the fleshing out of his personality in the more sensitive later movies like Casino Royale and Skyfall, he is still seen by some men as the ideal man. He is in fact - although exceptionally good as an assassin and exceptionally good at looking after himself in extreme situations an extremely damaged man. The better later films to be fair aknowledge this. His parents were killed while he hid in their house so he was an orphan and a boarder. The boarding no doubt squashed down his authentic emotions still further after the gruesome death of his parents. The one woman he loved (Vesper Lynd) was a double agent all the time and got killed so he becomes a womanizer (in reality he is furious at women I think - projecting Vesper onto all of them - or rather Vesper as far as he ever understood her) . The female spy chief (M - Judi Dench) who is constantly criticising him and telling him he needs to be better becomes a sort of substitute mother figure. The key here is that he feels safe with her and bonds with her precisely because she is not obviously warm and affectionate. I see Bond not as a shining example of masculinity and how men should behave but someone who is terrified of his feelings (hence his coolness and psychopathic tendencies) and is very very damaged. I do not see him as true to his authentic self (not that this is his fault. It is not as simple as that) I see him (at the risk of sounding "woke") as someone who really needs to be in therapy. We have to ask ourselves a lot of difficult questions about how for so long he has been seen by so many as the archetypal man. Someone to revere. Someone even to aspire to. Men can be strong without being sauve and macho and treating women like exotic commodities. (As really a beautiful face and a series of private parts) Strong men are not self pitying men but they are none the less those who are in touch with their feelings and accept them. They know when to express those feelings and they know when to control them and don't indulge totally in either extreme. They empower others instead of choosing a job where they have to kill them. Strong men are good men. They are not cool.
