Mairi, which is her real name, from the Sydney area, just turned ninety last year. She was one of the first ECKists in Australia in decades past. She said that some time ago, she was with the organization Meals on Wheels. This is an organization that distributes food to the needy. They drive around, and they bring meals. One day she was out with a partner she hadn’t ever worked with before. They made small talk because they didn’t know each other--just chitchatted and drove along.
Out of nowhere Mairi suddenly said, “I had an out-of-body experience when I was eight years old.” And then she clamped her teeth shut. She thought, Ah, what in the world made me say that?” But the man said, “Odd you should mention that.” He said he had once been in intensive care, in a coma, and out of his body. And here Mairi had just said she had been out of her body around age eight. So he had been out of his body too--up there looking around. Really, you’re not up there, but you are up there. You’re looking around.
He saw his whole family there, waiting for him to die. They were doing due diligence. But he noticed his son was not present, and he wondered about this.
Some time before this, his son and he had been planting a tree. And this man said to his son, “In no time at all it’s going to grow.” Then his son said a very disturbing thing. He said, “But I won’t be here to see it.”
This struck the father as very odd, and it came back to him now. What he didn’t know was that at this very time his son had been in a motorcycle accident and had been killed.
Mairi was listening to his story. She didn’t say anything but just listened. She said she was seeing how the Master was giving him a chance to talk, because he had told her, “I’ve never told this story to anyone in my life, not even my wife.” Presumably he meant his current wife, because this was a son from a prior marriage. He had never told her about the son nor that he’d been killed, so his present wife didn’t know it.
Mairi could see how this man was being healed. Maybe some feelings were lifting from him--feelings of guilt or that he hadn’t done enough. After all this time, now this could go away.
It was interesting. As Mairi listened and saw everything that was going on, she realized that the doubts in the man, and even some of his pain, were being cleared away. She and her driving partner never spoke of this again.
