Healing The Earth With Regenerative Farming | Gabe Brown

Did you know due to modern agricultural practices you have to eat eight oranges today to get the same amount of Vitamin A as your grandparents would have gotten from just one?
In this episode of the Sustainability Champions (formerly Sustainability Matters Today) podcast, I interview Gabe Brown, owner of Brown’s ranch and a champion of regenerative farming. Gabe is a producer and winner of many state and national soil health awards, including a Growing Green Award from the Natural Resource Defense Council, and a Zero-Till Producer of the Year Award.
In addition, he was named one of the 25 Most influential Agricultural Leaders in the United States. Gabe recently published, “Dirt to Soil: One Family’s Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture”, where he shares the story of healing his farm’s soil and paves the road for other farmers to follow in his footsteps.

To sustain soil is not enough, we need to build carbon in the soil, to gain not sustain. Regenerative agriculture is the way to go, even in suburban homes.

Left exposed to the elements, soil will erode and the nutrients necessary for successful plant growth will either dry out or quite literally wash away. At the same time, planting the same plants in the same location can lead to a buildup of some nutrients and a lack of others. But by rotating crops and deploying cover crops strategically, farms and gardens can infuse soils with more and more (and more diverse) soil organic matter, often while avoiding disease and pest problems naturally. Sustainability is the thing we should not be doing, at the beginning he talks about oranges today compared to the past and the lack of nutrients why would we want to sustain that type of fruit? we need to get beyond the buzz words and first build a healthy soil with nutrient rich foods, food for health then we can talk about sustaining that type of agriculture. If the cost of organic is too much for a family then just keep eating the fast food and nutrient deficient food so you can afford all those medical bill you will have in the future as the old saying goes. “ pay me now or pay me later”

I think that’s a great point! The buzz word is a bit misleading in that sense. I think a better word is “regeneration”. What do you think?

It's not about sustaining that kind of fruit as it's not about the fruit it's the soil that is nutrient depleted
