Health anxiety (Hypochondria) can be confusing. It can trick you into thinking you may be in great danger when you're not. It takes normal physical symptoms and makes you create catastrophes about what it actually means. Let's go through what health anxiety looks like and how to do the treatment.

We can get through this guys. We are strong. Our bodies are power and have powerful indicators. If things are actually wrong, there are prevalent things that occur. If you have a brain tumor, youll probably have seizures, blacking out, extremely forgetful etc. If its a heart attack, youll actually feel it intensely and if its a dangerous heart attack, youll probably have had a history with it. The same goes with most other health issues. Anxiety sucks and we just have to try and think as logical as possible. We are all okay. If you do have a deep/extreme health concern, you would know to go to the doctor. I love each and every one of you.

@@bloodstainedramparts6631 , I understand you. It is horrible having health anxiety. Do you also have depression or do you take any meds? IF your insomnia is long term and constant there are meds to help with that. I would try other things first before resorting to meds.

All videos always tell health anxiety sufferers to first see their doctor to rule out anything "serious", and then to use whatever tools/strategies/ ideas the health anxiety expert recommends. However, what about health anxiety sufferers who can't even make it to a doctor because they're terrified of what they might be diagnosed with? Could you possibly address this in another video? I have some clients who don't dare see a doctor and haven't seen one in years. Thank you!

I had a lump in my breast and didn’t go to the doctor for 3 months (it turned out to be nothing). I developed health anxiety and now I’ve told myself that I had breast cancer, a brain tumour, throat cancer, colon cancer, bone cancer, leukaemia etc. I really don’t have any symptoms, except a few pains. I know it’s irrational and that is so exhausting. I also only have my ‘symptoms’ when I’m alone. When I’m with friends, it’s gone (which sucks when there’s a pandemic going)... so tiring Edit: I'm much better now, I will always be a hypochondriac, but luckily I don't have the same horrible anxiety as months ago

Guys I’m recovering slowly and can feel it Here’s what I started doing - read a book, get your mind off of some things it also helps you stay super calm. - Exercise, go for a run, lift weights or whatever you can do to stay active. - Change something in your lifestyle that might better yourself. - play mind games (Sudoku, or word puzzles) This is what helped me get better and better -Lastly, eat healthy this is a game changer and will help you. Try to take this anxiety as a sign to better your life and become a stronger person, by doing some of the things I stated above it can help change your behaviours towards the reactions and stop trying to figure it out. I’m not a health advisor but that’s what I did to help myself, hope you guys all recover.

I have annoyed everyone around me to the point I just suffer in silence now. I wouldn’t wish health anxiety on anyone. It’s sheer hell. But for those around us not dealing with health anxiety, I promise we are not doing this for attention or to be annoying, we are actually really really struggling. The constant reassuring that we are so desperately looking for just calms us down momentarily. It gives us a small moment of calmness before the madness in our minds starts again. This resonates with me quite a lot. I too obsess over my heart rate and lately temperature. Also my breathing. Granted, my health anxiety began with a very real health issue; but my anxiety has snowballed the issue into feeling like it's way worse than it really is. In fact, my issue is rather benign. But many times, I go down the rabbit hole of convincing myself it's certainly not benign. And then it branches off. Something I'm going thru right now, is sever insomnia because of my anxiety; but I've somehow convinced myself that my insomnia is caused by an entirely separate health issue that just magically appeared at the same time as my real health issue. In fact, I can't sleep because my anxiety has scared me away from sleeping. Not because I'm dying of some rare disease 100 people on the planet have.

obsession about checking heart rate can keep your heart rate higher. Your hear rate jumps because of your FEAR and not any other reason, If your doctor has given you a clean chit. What will happen if you stop obsessing about your heart rate or temperature.

I’ve been struggling with health anxiety specifically about my heart since last march. I had panic attacks almost every minute of the day for the following two months, however I have been doing a lot better. Since then, I finally got diagnosed with OCD and ADHD and started to take lexapro to help with the anxiety. To anyone who has felt like they’re struggling with anxiety, I promise it will get better. Just 6 months ago, I swore I was going to die every waking second, but now my heart health barely crosses my mind. I know it feels like you’re trying to climb out of a black hole, but I promise you it will get better. Even if you feel worse in the moment, remember that every journey has its ups and downs and you’re just experiencing a down. “Just like everything, this feeling too shall pass”. (please ask me any questions if you need them :) I’ve been given many resources over the past year and would love to share them if needed)

I'm struggling with the heart problem. I have palpitations and chest pain. Everyone tells me it's just anxiety and I've had it for months and never even passed out before, but I constantly think "This time is it, I'm dying" How did you get better?
@addition28
@addition28 4 ай бұрын
@@games_bond7221 that sounds exactly like what i went through. Going to therapy really helped me realize my irrational thoughts about my heart. I had to realize “This has happened before, and I have been okay. There is no reason this time should be different”. it took a while for me to get that into my head even after hearing it over and over again. I also had a at home blood pressure cuff in case of emergencies that put me at ease whenever I was getting too stressed out about it. I would see that my blood pressure was fine, and be able to start to calm down. At the same time, I did not want to rely on that as a crutch because eventually it would give me more to worry about if I couldn’t find it. While it did help in the worst of the worst of my scenarios, I definitely did not want to become reliant on it. There’s not going to be a specific answer I can give you to make it all stop right away, but the best thing I can say is that you’re okay. I had heart palpitations and chest pain as well as other symptoms, but I really just had to face it all head on. Another thing that helped me is when I was feeling anxious about my heart, is that I would go do something. I would go outside and pace around my yard, the block, walk around some trees. I think it helped me knowing that someone could still get to me in the worst scenario because I was outside. If you think this would help, I would also call someone to talk through it while you’re feeling anxious. You don’t have to make conversation with them at all, but I think it’s a similar mindset of having someone near you even if something did go wrong. It’s really an uphill battle that you need to get multiple opinions from multiple people on that you trust. If I got through it, you can to. I know it seems super sucky right now, but you’re doing just fine. If you feel like you can’t give it 100% in a day, give the 30% that you have or the 80% that you have. It’s going to be a journey, but it will get better every day.

I’ve had healthy anxiety for the last year. It all started with a visit to the ER at 1:00am for gastritis. Ended being a mild thing but ever since then I’ve diagnosed myself with, Colon cancer, lymphoma, stomach and esophageal cancer and have worried about so much many other things related to my health. I even got a upper endoscopy and the biopsy came back negative. I go through good weeks and bad weeks. The good ones are getting shorter and shorter. I wake up sometimes in a panic with sweaty palms and my heart is racing. I’ve had therapy and one thing that does help sometimes is realizing I’m catastrophizing my symptoms also realizing my intrusive thoughts aren’t real. I’d like to get better so I can live a life filled with hope and maybe meet someone. I’m trying to do the work to get better everyday. It’s hard but I’m willing to fight for peace.

Brilliant video thanks so much for uploading. The thing is when you get a "symptom" and continuously search for reasons causing it you know it's stupid and it's the anxiety that is the route cause tricking your brain but you still google every possibility just in case. The times when health anxiety doesn't bother me are fantastic but when I don't watch out that it's creeping up on me it's like being hit by a sledge hammer when those feelings resurface and it's devastating when you put so much work into dealing with the panic previously. But you do know that if you have overcome health anxiety before - well learned to cope better with it - that you can do so again as and when you have to.

A good way to try and help you realise that it's health anxiety, write a list of all the illnesses you've thought you've had over the years. You'll see the sheer amount of things you think you've had and it can't all be true! Also you usually forget the illness you think you've had when a new one comes along. Since there have been two situations with blood clots close to me recently, its become something I've become so paranoid about. Im always checking my legs to see if they've swollen, panic when I feel chest pain (which has eased since taking tablets, but any slight feeling, I panic all over again), I currently have (what I rationally SHOULD think is) a pulled muscle, but all I've done all day is google what DVT feels like and cry. TBH when I clicked this video, I was hoping for a guideline of "how to know if it's serious enough to go to the doctor." I realized that seeking that answer is just another compulsion! Instead, your idea of "We're just going to take that risk" is really refreshing and helpful.

This felt so directly to me. My mom has always been so exaggerated about health stuff, she gets concerned about the smallest stuff and I feel like that rubbed off on me. Last year I had covid and then I got a really bad cold again, I thought it was covid again (it was not, but it was still annoying to deal with). After that I started worrying terribly about my throat and my breathing, thinking my breathing will go away at any moment, that my throat will close, that something will happen… etc, I tried reassuring these thoughts and well, they only became worse, I have been trying to not problem solve them and reassure them but it’s been really hard, I get even more anxiety like my brain is fighting back at full force… I know I need more help but it makes a lot of sense everything you said. Thank you.

Very accurate indeed. Mine started with OCD which has interfered with health, checking household appliances were working or off, driving, walking...all kinds of things. I believe mine was triggered by a Consultant saying I had "Grossly Abnormal" blood results...my own Doctor said they were fine, but the ball had started rolling...that was 18 years ago. I have much better control over my Health Anxiety now, not perfect, but so much better. The key is to fight back as you suggest. In 2018 I visited the Docs 25 times in a year...in 2019 I fought back and only went 3 times. I went 0 times during the pandemic. It can be done! The only thing I would emphasise more in this video is how clever the subconsciousness is in creating many symptoms.. when your conscious catches it being mischievous it moves along to another part of the body to cause bother. Anyway, great video and I hope it helps lots of people.

Pandemic arrives and I suffer REAL heart problems- my doctor tells me it's anxiety but what do they know... Mono was mis-diagnosed for 3 months. Finally after a heart attack on the motorway which turned out to be a panic attack I've had to confront my Somatic Health Anxiety (I'm good unless I have body sensatios). Once you accept you have Health Anxiety you can begin to manage it ... it does not go away ... I'm already back at the doctors having full bloods & another ECG. I practice mindfulness and if I stop when I feel better slowly I sink back onto panic mode. I'm still learning; I will have to control this and avoid all the reassuring techniques and deal with my panic. Everyday. Getting a reminder that I have a fast heart rate on my Apple Watch sends me into a panic. Some days I don’t wear it just for that reason. Lately I have been OBSESSED with the idea that I am having a heart attack or stroke. STAY AWAY FROM GOOGLE AND SELF DIAGNOSIS!

Me too, I still have it, But since a month, i am doing regular workout and jogging to pump my heart faster, In that way, later the heart beats comparatively slower than the earlier anxiety heart beating. Try it.

I think I'm onto sometjing when it comes to this issue because I have the same issue. When I notice my heart rate is too fast, I ask myself questions: 1. Would I have noticed this heart rhythm if I wasn't constantly paying lots of attention to how my body feels? 2. Will this still be a problem tomorrow? 3. Have I had lots of stress recently? (By the way, fun fact that I learned yesterday: if you're constantly put into stressful situations, your body will start reacting to the tiniest bit of stress with physical symptoms. So even if you don't think you're that stressed, it could still be the cause of the fast heart beat, and hypochondria definitely is a chronic stress.) 4. Is a this symptom even something to worry about or is it a normal body function that just feels a bit out of order? 5. Have I been active and healthy recently? And I remind myself that the body of a hypochondriac loves to fake symptoms and that the possibility of the symptoms being serious is so minimal, it might as well not exist.

You are exactly right we will know when we have to go to the doctor there will be no guessing. What's scary about looking things up on Google especially things like cancer is that it'll come up and say sometimes it's asymptomatic or no symptoms present and that's what freaks people out. I believe the no symptoms thing is overplayed. Our body has intelligence and it's either fighting whatever it is off or it's going to let us know that it's having a hard time. Thank you for the great video.

I’m a bit of a hypochondriac but it’s not for attention as I keep it to myself. It’s usually from past trauma, anxiety and other issues. And not all therapy works for everyone as each case is unique. I still get up in the morning, I can function, I exercise, eat well and try my best, but because I went down the wrong road from the beginning of my anxiety disorder back on 2014. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, in fact it takes more courage to live like this.

Sometimes I read that health anxiety/Illness Anxiety Disorder are considered part of OCD and sometimes, like in your video, they are considered separate, yet commingled, as you mentioned. Which is true? Thank you for your very insightful videos. I just found you/them the other day and have watched many and learned much.

To be honest I do have my mama that worries about her health and has panic attacks and I think it’s because my whole life I seen her deal with it but now that older to understand and go through it as well I want to help her and my self surpass it and take the control back from ocd and anxiety. Lately I been good with my anxiety but then I have days where I over think about my heart rate or numb arm. The doctor has told me that I’m a healthy 25 year old and this started with last year the pandemic where I thought I had covid and going to get sick and fall asleep and not wake up like many of the people I heard that had covid and pass away but that when I first experience a bad panic attack. I hated it but I slowly learn to get control and try medication and be able surpass it. Later I would experience throat sensation other stuff now it’s just heart and shallow breathe but I’m slowly but surely recovering. I really enjoy your video! and I always tryed exposure and has helped me a lot. There’s times I forget about exposures therapy until I get to remember that I been through this and got this! yes anxiety wants to keep you there and make you feel like bad but o got this ! So does everyone else ! your not alone

Thank you. I’ve never felt so understood and this comment section is also really helpful. I have important events coming up which I cannot be ill for and hence have been doing everything in my power not to. But this caution had turned into an obsession to the point that I am so hyperfocused on every possible “sign” of illness that I start researching it and subconsciously manifesting it. It’s so difficult because it seems like a never ending cycle where I can’t win. I’m just so scared of letting go of that illusion of control. It’s so frustrating as well because I never know whether these symptoms are actually happening or whether it’s just my anxiety kicking in. The more I try and control, the more everything feels out of control.

I didn’t realize so many others suffer from this as well. Today has been tough. I literally had to rush out of Home Depot because I thought I was gonna pass out. I have a chronic pain condition that keeps this vicious circle of anxiety going. Everytime I feel pain I don’t think it’s my normal chronic pain I feel like it’s something way worse. Sometimes I try to rationalize like I’ve been dealing with this for so long and haven’t died yet so I must be ok. After watching videos of health anxiety I’m sure that’s what’s going on. I’ve been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Anxiety can be hell.

As a type 1 diabetic, my chances of developing pretty much anything is going to be higher than a non-diabetic. This comes with some serious health anxiety and every week is a new struggle. This week I am worried I have blood cancer because I feel tired. Last week I worried about going blind because I saw floaters. It just never ends! This video was extremely reassuring though. I am going to start working to change!

I can relate very much to this! Just survived my first surgery on endo and ever since I always came up with new disease everyweek. It’s just doesn’t stop :( I kept googling and translating my symptoms. Feel insecure if it might be cancer or anything serious😢

Hi I've just watched your video and can honestly say that it's made me want to try and overcome my thoughts.. I've had ocd since 2004 when I had a car crash. Had therapy in the priory ...was all ok until the pandemic last year when I woke up thinking I was in an oxygen tent with covid . Since then I've had cbt which was good. But now health anxiety has taken over again and I'm fearing Ive got cancer especially bowel.. It's driving my mind crazy. I've tried to stop it but sometimes it's overwhelming. Struggle with working as I worry I'm a 50 year old man, ex forces and can't believe I'm like this .. I feel sad that it's come to this .. I will watch your help videos and hopefully will be in a better frame of mind .. Thankyou Mark England
