My wife and I are both, just, retired physicians. We have put to rest 3 close relatives in the last 6 months including my wife’s younger brother. We also recently had COVID(fairly mild). Dwelling on dying is silly, BUT, preparation is priceless. By your late 50’s you should have wills, health care Proxies, and careful understanding of your financials by both parties, including written details. Yes , living healthy creates better odds, but ultimately we all die, and often one person in a couple dies substantially before the other. Also often one of the two will have poor health later in life which then means the couple can no longer do as much, even though one partner is still good. There are always exceptions, but on average many couples in their late 70’s and especially their 80’s, have at least one person with serious health issues or death. And you just don’t see many couples in their 90’s. The prime years are the 60’s and early 70’s. Which is a good reason to retire a little early, and do things while you can. Working longer to have more money may not be a wise tradeoff.

I watched this video twice because it was so timely for my husband and I. We’re older than the both of you. I’m 61 and he’s 70. Saying that blows my mind, because we are young for our age. We both exercise daily and eat well. Neither of us have any major illnesses. But in the last couple of years we’ve seen that no matter how “healthy” you live, you physically decline. It’s just a fact. Just 2 weeks ago we did a “cheat sheet”. It’s really a “cheat book”. We listed all our money/investments, insurances, deeds, everything in a book with account numbers,passwords, amounts and so forth. We put wills, living wills, life insurance policies in this book. I have always handled the bills/finances. But I just handed in over to my husband to do, with me looking over his shoulder for a few months. So that he knows how things work. We even talked out the hard to speak about, what if one of us dies. What would the other do? Hard stuff to talk about after being a team for 42 years. But, it somehow has eased my worrier brain now that we’ve done it. Good to see you both up and about. Hope to meet you both someday in person. We can exchange gambling stories as we were professional gamblers in the US for 5 years. Wanna talk about worry? We aged 20 years in 5 years. Lol.

I have drawn up a FLOP, Financial Life on One Page. It includes: bank accounts, insurance, pensions, etc as well as passwords and a brief directive about end of life and and a funeral wish list.

It’s even scarier if you’re alone. About 5 years ago, I got food poisoning while traveling and thought “I could die in this Airbnb and no one would know until the cleaner comes at the end of the month.” I didn’t speak the language, knew no one in town and didn’t know how to call for help. I didn’t even know where the nearest hospital or clinic was located. My only emergency back-up was to contact my family back in the US and ask them to send help. Thankfully, I recovered in a couple of days, but I sometimes wonder what might have happened if I didn’t.

I know this is going to sound odd, but call a cab, check yourself into the nicest hotel with a restaurant and room service you can find. In our experience, the concierges have always been SOOOO HELPFUL! We have also relied on the kindness of our AIRBNB hosts, who have been over the top helpful.

Glad to see you too! A suggestion when you first arrive in a country take that first day to catch your breath, get adjusted to the time change, no hustle. Look at the places you want to see, catch up on your emails, maybe do a zoom chat with friends and family have a dinner in your room depending on where you stay. Have a good nights sleep or sleep in!

What a relief to see the two of you together! Great to see you back Sarah! YES, on the cheat sheet. And there is an interesting correlation between poker and health. Obviously you achieved a high level of mastery through intelligence and practice, Neil. But with poker and health we know there is that element of chance that cannot be controlled. It is a variable that can be incredibly unfair (just like the fall of the cards), but we must deal with it nonetheless. You two are clearly very thoughtful and appropriately cautious, without letting it interfere with the pursuit of your dreams. As you point out, good health and financial planning are two foundational requirements for the path you have chosen. I admire how you manage both!

Great video. We are 6 weeks into a 6 month nomad travel and got Covid 3 weeks ago. The isolation is hard. We did the same thing, I got it 4 days before my husband and we tried to isolate from each other but we were in a one bedroom apartment. I am a worrier and he has underlying health conditions so I was very anxious about him getting it. I started questioning why were we doing this. On your cheat sheet should be local medical information. Honest communication with each other is important. The question should I worry about this is a great idea.

We had to head back to Toronto last winter to deal with Tom's prostate cancer. Fortunately we were able to get all testing done and get accepted into a clinical trial for treatment. We're now spending the summer months in Montreal and are planning to spend the winter in Asia or Europe (not sure yet lol). So far, the treatment appears to be a success, but we will be getting tested every few months for the foreseeable future. It shows that although we travel full time, we also need to be vigilant about our health, and be flexible with our plans. So glad to hear that you're doing better now!

Use a 'point system' to tell each other how you are feeling physically, emotionally, etc. In the hospital, the staff sometimes asks patients if their pain level is a '2' or and '8' for example (on a 10 point scale) so that they know how much pain the patient is feeling and if they need pain relief after surgery, etc. This would be a fairly accurate way to determine if there is anything to be worried about/needs 'fixed'. Have a plan in place for when emergencies arise, whether it is financial, physical, environmental (flood, fire, etc) and review that plan from time to time so worrying is not the first response.

That is such a good idea. I did a trek to Everest base camp, and every morning and evening our guide would ask us rate out of 5, how we slept, how we were eating, how our stomach was, pain/headache, and general mood. From day 1 everyone was 5, so it really gave him a good benchmark and he got a really good idea of how everyone was going at altitude, rather than "Im OK!". Works really well.

Regarding setting up a cheat sheet, there are lots of websites and blogs covering the topic of "home management," where they have suggestions and/or templates for what is generally known as a "Household Notebook." It's usually a 3-ring binder with pages of info that a whole family may need to access, such as contact info for doctors, vets, etc., prescriptions, due dates for bills, passwords, and task lists, or whatever!. Of course, you may not need a big 3-ring notebook, nor very many pages, but doing an internet search for the term "Household Notebook" will bring up a ton of results, many of which will probably give you a great ideas and a starting-off point to customize your own version. I keep a small accordion file that has a zipper all around it and keep my most important, most often accessed papers and checklists in that. Good luck!

I really like the idea of a household notebook that has all that in one place. We've been married over twent years (and I've been around more than twice that) and have just never been that organized.

Another excellent video guys. Happy to see you are both fighting fit again. Health is so incredibly important when travelling. We had to stop in 2018 when I came down with a viral infection, that took just on a year to recover from and 7 collective specialist working together in the UK. Our travels have now dramatically changed but we make it work and stick within our limitations. My sister and I are retired and have been traveling since Sept 2020. We mostly stay places for one month to 6 weeks. We planned for phones, clothing, zoom calls, finances, etc but we did not expect to do a medical tour of the US and Europe. There's been covid, covid leftover chest infections, stomach flus, skin infections, broken ribs, broken toes, sprained ankles, skin rashes, allergic reactions - you name it. Almost every spot we stopped in involved a Dr. Appt. Some were easy, some harder, some pure PSTD. We feel your pain and agree that managing your health has to be an integral component of long-term travel. We are working on getting and staying physically stronger in order to carry on for as long as possible. We have gained help from our landlords, tour guides and sometimes Facebook groups, as well as hotels (even if we are not staying there the concierge is more than happy to suggest DR and hospitals.). We love listening to your videos. Thank you and hope the next several months are as good as they can be under the circumstances.

I'm 53 and encouraged at our similar ages and your ability to escape corporate life early! So glad to hear you voice how your 50s are physically. My mind feels like I'm late 20s and I have chronic back aches from being glued to my corp seat and pc screen for decades! So I'm always questioning well I'd feel better if I lost weight, exercised more...all true but the fact is the 50s do bring on tightness and less flexibility, aches in certain places where we never used to feel that. A time to help ensure we can maximize what we can to preserve health and movement in those future retirement phases.

Great vid. It's true, illness, even a cold can really take the wind out of your sail when travelling. We spent 3 months in Thailand earlier this year. From there we flew into Vietnam on a 30 day visa. On arrival we contracted a severe cold/flu virus. Combined, we were 'out' for 3 weeks. When that happens you really just want to be back home in familiar surroundings - not out hunting for medications in an unfamiliar city/town where you don't know the language, etc. We now make a habit of carrying various meds for a host of common ailments as well as a list of local hospitals/clinics with instructions in the local language of what we need in the event of an emergency. It also helps to know food/delivery apps so you can have food/stuff delivered easily.

Really glad you guys are back to your best, my Wife and I had the same thing straight after Covid getting ill again with something else 😫😫😫. Pretty new to watching you guys so on a binge mission, but really really loving watching and very interested as we're looking to do something similar in the future. My family went plant based a couple of years ago for health reasons so we would love to hear from you about plant based food options in the places you visit as we've really struggled with this outside of the UK. Yay! The Dynamic Duo is back. It's great to see Sarah again. I feel if one does not have their mobility or cognition there's no benefit to living longer. I feel as if I have an insurance policy with Bikram Yoga, but I need to practice regularly to keep everything in my body running optimally. I was emotionally ready to retire years before I was able to! I admire the way you two roll. Have you thought of doing a LIVE Q&A once a quarter? 1. You cannot plan for everything. 2. Risk mitigation is simply contingency - always have a plan B - worst case scenario that is being realistic. It's sod's law my dad called it. Have to agree with your Mrs prepare for the worst and pray for the best...digressing you guys are brilliant. Stay safe, get healthy, and all the best to you both. Remember you cannot plan everything, but you can prepare and know what your options are just in case that is information about where is the local hospital etc. You two are really capable! Complacency is simply overconfidence. Share information you are both reliant on each other. Health is number #1 simple as that.

But would love to see what else you guys add to yours in the event we're missing something. Last week my husband got covid and it was a real eye opener for all the things he does. Work was busy so I barely kept up. Go to work together on a cheatsheet when traveling so we'd each know what to do if the other wasn't able to help plan or make decisions

Great to see you back up and about Sarah! I was thinking of you this week as I have been selling my beloved handbags….it’s been so hard parting with them and I can proudly say I have only kept 3 which I just couldn’t bare to part with. I remember in one of your videos I watched recently your struggle to part with your handbags too 🤣 must say though I’m kinda happy that that’s done and now to move onto the next cupboard of possessions to sell 😩

Good video and you're right, health is a really important factor, especially when travelling abroad. I will definitely tune in (I feel 51 when I realise I'm still using those phrases!) to your next video as being psychologically prepared for retirement is a specific challenge for me and my partner. I'm more ready to stop work, I think my wife is more comfortable being kept busy and occupied in a job. Even though we have enough to retire, how do you make that leap?

Sarah so nice to see you again, and that fact you are both well again. Love your transparency both of you its so refreshing... Totally relate to the ageing process having been relatively fit all my life now at age 57 somethings are slowing down and it certainly can be a worry when thinking of travel. I have tried to eliminate as much as possible for when I leave NZ and once I arrive in Mexico will be making sure I have at hand certain help if needed and good insurance. However, I have also learnt you cannot eliminate everything -I have tossed up if I am actually mad doing what I am doing) Over the years I have used hospitals in far off lands and everything works out sometime better than when in New Zealand. As far as the cheat sheet I think it is a great idea for you both. As I am planning my exit from NZ I utilise a list of for and against and the what ifs as we know we can spend way to much time worrying about what wont actually happen I have learnt to deal with this unnecessary worries by up skilling my EQ, not all is tamed but I feel 90% of the time the worry factor is under control...I think I like what Peter stated below that not allowing worry to be the first response as it has become the default mood when something happens as its what you have always done this groove in the brain needs recharging with some truths for whatever the situation maybe.

Just going through COVID for the 2nd time in a year after being vaccinated and boosted twice. I have to say this 2nd round is simply a head cold and some fatigue so I’m grateful. The checklist is a great idea. I’m the travel arranger and since I’ve been sick, it has alerted us to the need to share this basic information on travel plans and insurance info. I keep a basic financial spreadsheet and have told our executor where to find it but I should also write down where to access it too for my spouse. We review it together on a regular basis but he never remembers where it’s located. Looking forward to seeing the checklist. Glad to see you both feeling better!

I finally gaves you guys a thumbs up. I've been watching your videos on and off for quite a while now and have always been struck by the different approach you both communicated. I absolutely loved this video. The forthrightness, the frankness - - I don't want to use the word "humility" - - the 'open' introspection is very refereshing. Perhaps it's a difference between our cultures, but I find that KZbinrs are either too optimistic or pessimistic and shallow. I liked your directness and discussion of a deeper matter that reminds us to all think about the important things. I believe that what you brought to our attention appllies to non-travelers as well. Please keep it up - I'm now a bigger fan.

Really interesting points made, especially for those of us around the same age and thinking of retiring in the not-so-distant future. I've only recently come to realise during the process of thinking of retiring that you need to be emotionally ready and to have a plan.

One needs to spend time maintaining as well as building a support network in retirement.This is also an important part of a healthy retirement life. No matter how great a planner one is, life can always throw a curveball so being appreciative of the "small" things every day, also helps.

Nothing quite like a bout of illness to make you realise how important your health is 😀 Right now I’m supposed to be 4 months in to a year long overland trip from the UK to Thailand… I’m supposed to be in Kyrgyzstan, but I’m here in Lincoln and it was bad health that brought this on last year aged 55… I’m getting better now but it was a close thing that came out of the blue. Once you hit mid 50’s anything can happen so we have to take care of our health. That said a positive attitude and a sense of gratitude will go a long way.. Really pleased you’re both better and feeling well… I’m looking forward to seeing some of your videos of Thailand. Travel well guys.

So happy to see the 2 of you feeling better. I was thinking that if it were me every time I would think of Thailand, I would be remembering "OMG we were so sick there." I almost want you to leave so some fun times can begin. I know it's not the country's fault but still....I guess since you live in the whole world, you're bound to get sick in even the most beautiful places. I hope that you are really feeling like yourselves. I wish the best for you both. I miss the teaser about where you may be going next.

Hi Neil and Sarah, Being ill at anytime is difficult, but away from “home” adds an isolation factor. No friends, no family and no familiar doctor or clinic. Add to that that male tendency of “play it down, probably nothing, give it time and it will go away” makes for a real challenge! Well you got through it! You did seek medical support and it has worked out. I am wondering though if what you have mentioned before about spending more time in places that you connect with has taken on even more importance? For example, San Miguel (I really like Queretaro) where you started to build some connections, could easily find a good doctor, and therefore feel less of the isolation factor. I am sure Thailand, Turkey and other places could be like that too. The other comment I have made before - disguised as a bit of banter is to lose UK (modern - Americans are even worse) eating and drinking habits. All the countries but the US will have helped but if you are still eating chips, you are not there yet! When we get old it is not just how long we live but the quality of those later years and the way we eat and drink (I would nag you on exercise but it looks like you both do quite well there) has a huge impact. I was married to an Italian and spent a good part of my career in Japan and Korea - so very positive influences on the way I eat! Anyway, keep the adventure going! You are still in the exploratory phase and I am sure there are many more countries you want to see! Cheers, Rod in Honolulu

I created a spreadsheet of all of the passwords on all of the accounts and phone numbers, account numbers and balances for all of the accounts. I update it regularly and store it on a thumb drive we keep in a safe place. Those dynamics can really make things challenging. We have similar ones in our relationship. One of us will fix anything with a roll of duct tape, the other of us insists on “doing it right the first time”. And we also have that worry one. Only need to have one worrier in the relationship 🤪

It is great to see you both feeling better 😀 I fell ill once in Yucatan, and I never felt so sick. Infected lymph node and you know that sick feeling like "uh oh, this is not good..." well that was me. I tried to push through it but 2 days in I asked my friends to take me to a Dr. Antibiotics kicked in quickly. It does feel scary to be weak and sick in a foreign country so I do sympathize with you both. As long as you have the cheat sheet, access to med care, cash & credit and if nec, understand the repatriation logistics (provided by your insurance) should you need to fly back to the UK, then. Arry on traveling. Take care guys, and thanks for sharing your situation with us.

Great to to see you both looking well and feeling great again your right about the health side of things that's why if you are fortunate to be able to retire young take the chance and do it, because we never know what's round the corner . Jude and I retired at the end of 2019 when we were 53 then the pandemic hit so that stopped the planned travels ,so we said lets start traveling April this year the first trip was booked to Cuba in April then Jude tripped over a tree stump and broke her shoulder so Cuba got canceled and travel put on hold for a few months now we are 56 where did that time go we are hoping to get traveling in august and get some KZbin vids done for our channel keep safe Martin and Jude x

Yes it is a challenge isn't it when we approach things differently to how our partners do, there is space for all approaches but it is important to actually give those time to breath. Sarah loves a good worry, it is probably the biggest difference between us and in many ways I think that worry in the moment can actually cause more problems. Take for example crossing busy roads in Thailand... Sarah can dither and actually make the process far more dangerous than it needs to be as a result of worry. But also, me not worrying can actually lead to other dangerous situations as I have a tendency to walk blindly into situations. Always work together, that's the most important thing isn't it. Glad you are both recovering and feeling better! Would like to see your cheat sheet. I imagine a cheat sheet would have account info, email and phone contacts for banks, credit cards, travel-related accounts (airbnb, airlines, etc), travel insurance. These things generally don't change between locations but are nice to have in one spot. Add to that local destination info on arrival, such as specific airbnb/lodging contacts, local consulate (US Citizens can register trip with STEP), nearby hospital address and emergency number, how to contact local police, expat groups/english speaking contacts.

I lived in India and Malaysia for 12 years. Plant based pretty OK there and Thailand. Sometimes in India people will think vegan is vegetarian so try to check if food cooked in ghee or milk/eggs added. Ditto Malaysia. In Thailand I'd try to zero in on vegan plants and learn how to negotiate vegan eg no oyster sauce/whatever in Thai. Good luck!

Good to see you all doing better! Always find your topics interesting! Richard I had no idea you were a seasoned poker player! I bet that was a huge rush. I am interested in the cheat sheet. Definitely having a plan for when you may fall in. Can't wait for the next video! We are going to move to Mexico and do a bit of travel in Central /South America. My question to you is does this way of travel ever get old? Do you ever feel like wow I would like to take a break? I'm just curious when I've travelled I got so sick of eating out.

Some interesting points. I was just wondering how old you both were? You are still young enough to be doing this with fairly low risk, I am thinking of doing some solo travel but I am a little older (60) and what's stopping me setting off is the worry of getting ill and being alone in some country on the other side of the world. Any thoughts or advice?

In terms of getting sick on the road I might suggest adding a cheat sheet that we use. I call it a protocol card. It so easy to forget what to take and when to take it when you get sick. So I have made several index cards with protocols on what medicine to take and when or to remind ourselves what RICE means when we hurt a muscle group. We travel with a small emergency supply of flu, cold, stomach problem meds as well as rash and muscle creams so we can start right away without searching for a pharmacy.

We all know the right way to look after ourselves, the information is out there and healthcare and insurance will rise above inflation. Great video guys! Glad Sarah is feeling better. It’s funny, I seem to have more and more in common with Neal. I was quite into poker myself also. Played a lot of cash games in the casinos in Edinburgh/ Newcastle. I know the feeling of not being able to fold queens but you learn that in some situations you have to 😅. Poker is a good game - needs some serious mental strategy!

I prefer the cash tables as I could leave whenever I wanted. Although big tournaments can win you a lot more money - they just take ages! 😆

Hi, I'm enjoying watching your videos and I've often thought if I was travelling having the ability to play Texas hold 'em poker would give a skill I could play in different countries rather than nights with TV if I wasn't going out. Would you be able to do a video about how to improve at poker on the road e.g how to improve re you tube channels, books to buy, playing head to head with another person and good online poker sites. I'm going to take my 88 year old father on a road trip through the Great Lakes in 10 weeks to interview him on what he remembers from his childhood for posterity, for the kids and grandkids to hear from his own voice and figure this is the best "set it and go" system. Really wondering have you used safety wing insurance - are they good at paying out if you need them, as strange, from Australia, we can't take it the policy for Thailand until we've left the country apparently? Nice to see Sarah about and well again. It’s always easy to think that, once you’re retired, you’ll focus a lot more time on your fitness, but things you’d much rather do always rise to fill the time. As someone who seems to lose and gain the same twenty pounds, I empathise. The ladies in Our Freedom Years, Stephanie and Gillian, are very on top of their fitness and I envy them their ability to schedule the time consistently and stick with it. I know you set various fitness goals when you started, do you feel that your fitness has improved or declined in the year that you’ve been retired? The cheatsheet idea is a good one. While I don’t have a cheatsheet, I have a password protected note on my phone with all account numbers, usernames and password, contact telephone numbers, and scans of essential documents, like passports, birth certificates, etc. So at least they are centralised and backed up in the cloud. I’d definitely be curious how you evolve the cheatsheet, since it would probably change somewhat depending on where you are at the time. It’s also hard to come up with every eventuality, so as new ones occur to you, you will need to add to and update it. Random comment: Gosh that was a gorgeous spotted cat.

What the easiest things to do especially in Thailand, is get yourselves on a vegetarian diet for 3 months. I am not a vegetarian but go on 3-month stints. Find yourselves a personal trainer to learn how to exercise properly and develop a routine, it’s truly about education. Start out with beginners Yoga, take some vegetarian Thai cooking classes. You’ve got the time to educate yourselves. I’ve done it on three 3 month trips in Kerala India and have an Ayurvedic Doctor for deep massage treatment with amazing results. Take the 20 LB 3 months challenge.

A year ago I tore my knee parking my motorcycle in soft grass, it went further over and had to use left leg to prop it back up, too much weight resulted in knee tear. So pre-op prep was to lose 15 - 20 lbs, veg and fruit diet, just to take the weight off in post op and I’m very glad that I prepared from the 20 lbs that I shed before and kept up with. I’d have lose another 20 lbs to be comfortable with my new knee. Since post - op pain 10 times worse than the injury, since I don’t do pain killers. They truly mask things when one should be totally off the limb and mending faster, old time hockey logic from Canada.

Cheat sheet: everything in one place. Insurance, financial information, what to do if…. Also: knowing the Emergency Number ( in North America it’s 911) in the country you are in. And: the location of a hospital/ dr/ pharmacy.

I live in Thailand. Just a thought after this very difficult ordeal. How is your hydration and electrolyte levels? Worth a check up? Chiang Mai Hospital is the best in the country. A check up there will be affordable. Take care guys. Bless you.

@@2GoRoam Suggest a well person check at Chiang Mai Hospital. Looked at their website and costs 4000 baht. Maybe add a CRP (Inflammation) test to the blood panel? They can also provide intravenous hydration. In my experience low level dehydration can roll on an on. The hydration sachets (e.g. Royal sachets from 7:11) are good. Let me know if I can help more. (I thought I had already sent this message but didn't appear so might be a repeat).
