This is something I struggle with a lot! I come from a loud family, and I teach (though in a small room, but still) and I am used to "projecting" during my theater work back when I was younger. I need to bring it down and control it! BUT If I do the exercises with you, I match your note instead of my own. Habit XD I have to do it on my own haha

I think I got it...it seems my sweet spot is about an F4 (first F above middle C--not used to the number system yet) and that is definitely higher than I usually speak (B3, first B before middle C)) I came from a loud family that kind of sneered at higher voiced women (especially baby speak) and I think I internalized that. Sadly, I am still feeling a lot of strain from classes the other day, and my throat takes days to recover sometimes. I expressed my concern with my husband after watching the vid about MTD. I'll keep working on it, and I will have to consciously refocus myself during classes and try not to speak too loudly if I want to keep my voice. I love this video (that and the find your singing range one---seems mine reverted back to before I took lessons back when I was 14-15)

@@DrDanRobinson Thanks :) a Lot of the stuff you talk about reminds me of my old vocal instructor, Rabbi David. This was over 25 years ago, so some of what he said was outdated, but it is nice to see some things carried through.

Hey Dr. Dan really useful stuff in your videos. I have a question I haven't found in your videos. I have been singing for a couple months but I noticed I was being a bit loud, by then I went trough a kind of serious pharingitis. After a couple weeks of rest I have restarted practice but I feel some setback in my singing, also I'm a bit worried to overuse my voice. Any advice or videos you may have on this topic? Thanks

I used to have a gut feeling that age..surgical intubation and speaking without the sweet spot support...all these affect vocal performance in the long run....but how to substantiate my doubts?.. then as if God answered all my queries through you Dr.Dan..it was such a pleasant feeling to have all my search ending at one place....thank you so much

Dr. Dan! I love your videos and I have subscribed to your channel. I'm a bit confused about this particular video, however. Are you implying that it's more healthy to speak within a tighter vocal register, around your "money note"? Is the money note always the highest note you reach in the first exercise? Can you decide to focus on having a deeper voice, keeping your voice within this deeper vocal range, and still demonstrate healthy talking technique? Why is it more healthy to speak within a tighter vocal range anyway?

+Voice Essentials Thanks for your clarification! As for my original comment, I didn't mean "tight" as in constricted musculature, but tight as in a narrow frequency range, i.e., you state that's it's tempting to dip to lower notes when speaking, but it's healthier to stick closer to your money note. Thanks again for the feedback!

Hey Dr. Dan, it's me again. :) I commented on one of your other videos and thought of another question that I think is more appropriate here, since it has to do with healthy speaking technique. I was in a bar a few weeks ago, and it was quite loud, as it was karaoke night. I was with a group of friends, and we were talking to each other, but we really couldn't hear because the music was so loud. When I tried to raise the volume of my normal speaking voice, it was very uncomfortable and felt like my throat was being squeezed tightly. The only way to alleviate this was to go completely into my upper register, which I normally use for singing. It didn't hurt at all, which I took as a good sign, but is there a way to talk louder in my normal talking register without getting this feeling? Sorry for the long rambling comment. :) Just wanted to make everything clear. Talking in my upper register sounded a little weird to me as I don't do that normally, but at least everyone could hear me and it wasn't painful. Again sorry for the rambling. :)
