There is absolutely no reason for these 2 countries to fight. The world is big enough for both of them. They, especially the US, need to figure out a way to work together and treat each other with respect, and not a who's superior/inferior you-gotta-listen-to-me attitude. Taiwan, for example, the US just can't leave them alone, even though they recognize the island as legally part of China, the US media omits all of this, leading to more confusion among the American public. Same thing with Hong Kong, the media confuses people where they think Hong Kong is still somehow independent, the US state department just couldn't leave them alone, forcing China to pass a national security law. The US ended up achieving nothing. Nothing was gained. And the US didn't take in any Hong Kong residents or refugees during that time either.

The US does not “recognize the island as legally a part of China.” This is a strategic move by the US as it protects US interests and free global markets. Taiwan is a major producer of microchips and the US has given protection to Taiwan to maintain a free microchip market over the past several decades. Should Taiwan become a part of China and fall under Beijing’s rule, that market would be controlled by China exclusively who has indicated in the past that they will put their individual interests over the free market values that the US and many western nations have. In that scenario, China may limit the amount of microchips that the US and other nations can attain so that they can gain the upper hand in technology for the benefit of their economy and military strength. This would cripple technological advancements in western countries and their economies (because tech is built with microchips and technology makes up a large part of the economy). Maintaining a free market for the benefit of all is and has always been a principle of the US - one that we aim to promote worldwide. Thus, China threatening that free market vision creates conflict between the US and China. There is a reason for this tension and it is not simply a lack of respect but rather a disagreement of vision and values. Unfortunately, this is not clear to many Americans which is where the confusion that you mentioned Americans have comes from. There is a larger conflict at play and it’s not just a “you-gotta-listen-to-me” issue like you claimed. Everyone wants cooperation and peace but that cannot happen when there is a serious conflict between two parties which cannot be easily resolved and keep everyone happy. This issue comes down to what your individual values are: should China’s claim over Taiwan (which may not be historically justified but that’s a separate debate altogether) be more important than the US’s vision of a free market of microchips that other countries can buy for the benefit of their people and economies?

@@nickp7518 Your view is extremely western biased. The US cover story has always been "to maintain peace and stability" but every move geopolitically by the United States, its foreign policy, all point to "Peace through US domination". This of course depends on if you see the US as the "World Police" force, or an authoritarian world power who preaches democracy, but abuses its power for its own gain. I see them as the latter.

The news would sensationalize it in spectacular fashion, because $, the military would send a few escorts/observers to join the subs & recon aircraft already long on them at that point, and that would be that, provided they remained outside sovereign boundaries and didn't harass maritime traffic. But China DOES seem to have a need to ignore sovereign boundaries, themselves, what with "weather" balloons, clandestine police stations, and actually ignoring their immediate neighbors' own boundaries. Still doesn't mean they'd accomplish much trying to ignore US boundaries at sea. Beyond this, unless that skirting of the boundary at the international line also included observed military build-up, what projection of force China is currently capable of isn't intimidating to the U.S. Even if they were foolish enough to attack something so far from home, it would be an incredibly short-lived propaganda victory for them. At best, some cities on whatever coast would forget about their Navy's capabilities & let their imaginations conjure up some Chinese doomsday scenario, not realizing just how substantial an actual force would be needed to truly effect anything of significance by floating some giant targets just outside territorial waters. It really is that simple, absent parallel threats to accompany it. And this also goes for China v U.S. ships. Which means it's really a political/propaganda focus for their rulers, alongside their very real understanding that the U.S. presence complicates their desire to swallow up Taiwan & vassalize their neighbors using the more traditional version of imperialism, as opposed to the economics based integration that has, ironically, made them so successful since becoming less xenophobic. Got a taste; wants more. At least they're no different than anyone else, on that regard 😐

It's not insane. It's very smart. The US has vast experience in war. It is foolish for China to agitate them. The US has been at peace only 17 years since its creation on July 4, 1776. What the U.S. has done since WW2: invaded Iraq on WMD lies, bombed Cambodia, bombed Loas, Marshall Islands Nuclear Testing, Japanese Internment, Vietnam War, tortured prisoners in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, assassinated thousands of foreign leaders (democratically elected ones too), 24 countries invaded since WW2, 800+ bases in 70+ countries, countless embargos and sanctions that led to starvation and death of innocent civilians, armed and trained separatists factions in numerous countries, made 72 attempts at regime changes that led to decades of instabilities in numerous countries (Honduras, El Salvador, Libya, and Guatemala just to name a few) and so much more. So the US is very experienced in war. The US loves war. War is very profitable for the US. Plus it weakens other countries and solves overpopulation issues. Win-win-win. Other countries should just shut and listen or they're gonna get annihilated. China won't listen so they'll get what's coming for them.

Why do Chinese militia fishing boats harass their neighbors boats in their own waters and fish illegally with the aid of the PLA NAVY? The US loves war as it is very profitable. Plus it weakens other countries and solves overpopulation issues. Win-win-win. Actually there is no freedom of navigation in a strait that is formed by a country's mainland and an island belonging to that same country. Since even America itself doesn't recognize the ROC as independent of China they are clearly in the wrong here. In straits referred to in article 37, all ships and aircraft enjoy the right of transit passage, which shall not be impeded; except that, if the strait is formed by an island of a State bordering the strait and its mainland, transit passage shall not apply if there exists seaward of the island a route through the high seas or through an exclusive economic zone of similar convenience with respect to navigational and hydrographical characteristics.

She was a product of the system. It's a damn shame that most of these so called leaders worldwide just keep getting in the way and can't let people live their lives. There cannot be only one system in the world, the same one as the United States. Each country has its own history and culture, and there are great differences between the East and the West. The so - called Western civilization does not seem to be civilized now. Guns, drugs, racism, division, debt crisis in America. Intervene in various ways such as foreign hegemony, war, plunder, color revolutions, sanctions and supporting puppets. Let's see whether the United States has brought democracy freedom or disaster to the Middle East countries in the past few decades? I live in the United States, but I don't feel free because I'm afraid of going out and being shot because of my skin color. The so called democracy is elections every four years. It can only be called an election system, which is far from a democratic system, because democracy is about consultation, compromise and cooperation, not the current vicious struggle. An election cost tens of billions, and the one who wins the election is also one-party dictatorship and totalitarianism. The United States is used to hegemony. Today, China can't bear it anymore and does not allow the United States to send warships and planes to it. The national boiling in the United States can't stand. Can you think rationally, who is provoking? The so called international navigation in the sea and air refers to civilian use any military use must be reported when approaching or closer other countries. If you don't listen to the advice, you can only be forcibly evicted. The confrontation between China and the United States is just the beginning, because the United States cannot give up, and China will fight back in the same way. Amrricans must learn to be stronger in their mentality, and learn to empathize.

@@amandahsu1821 Good points , think of this , look at a tree , do we look at the branches or the roots to see if the tree is sick ? We look at the root of the problem. As a son of a WW2 22yr Navy vet dad . He was also there during the Cuban Missile Crisis . Read about both . China was our friend during WW2 , so was Soviet Union , I use that word friend loosely . Japan China were mortal enemies , we defeated Japan , so now China can rebuild and now they act today as Japan did from 1928 till 1945 . If the United States wanted to do the right thing , WW2 would have lasted till at least 1950 to 1955 , because awe would have done to China and Soviet Union what we did to Japan and Germany , we didnt , that caused the Cold War and the Korean War and Vietnam war . No body wants war except those leaders from countries that do not care about how they treat their citizens and their human rights . As bad as this the United States are , it sure can be better, but it can be alot worse being like North Korea with no freedoms . We have to much freedom in this country . And to much has its pros and cons as does North Korea . The problem is always at its root . Freedom vs no freedom . Not perfection in either , but progression .

Taiwan is the perfect excuse to start a war. The US has vast experience in war. It is foolish of China to agitate them.
