There will never be another song like this again so much starpower in one room

I _still_ listen to this song... probably once a week on the iPod. I wish they'd try to recapture the magic - but I don't feel like Metal musicians have the same connection with one another these days, like they did back then. (Seems like every Metal band is at each other's throat - like Great White, Queensryche, Ratt, etc., between vocalists and the other members)... And we've lost so many (such as Ronnie James Dio, the man and legend behind this piece)... so it would take someone with equal (or almost equal talent) to come up with great lyrics and powerful music.

In case no one has heard the recent news... Ronnie James Dio's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio has once again said that there are plans to reissue "Stars", the 1985 charity single for famine relief released under the HEAR 'N AID banner. On May 20 and May 21, 1985, 40 artists from the metal community gathered at A&M Records Studios in Hollywood, California to participate in the making of a record called "Stars" as a part of a very special fundraising project spearheaded by Ronnie James Dio known as HEAR 'N AID. The "Stars" single and a video documentary on the making of the record was used to raise money for famine relief efforts in Africa and around the world. These 40 artists - including members of MÖTLEY CRÜE, JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, QUIET RIOT, TWISTED SISTER, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT and even SPINAL TAP - along with hundreds of other volunteers, donated their time and talent over four months to make HEAR 'N AID a reality. "Stars" was a plea for unity in the fight against world hunger. Due to contract differences with the labels, the "Stars" song and album weren't released until New Year's Day, 1986, and were only ever made available on vinyl and cassette. But Wendy is continuing her efforts to correct that. "Well, we've talked about it a lot," she said during an appearance earlier today (Monday, September 25) on SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). "I never seem to have the time, but it will be down the pipeline. I'd like to add some new stuff to it, to get some new, younger bands in there as well to record some stuff along with the old stuff. Obviously all the money will go to [Ronnie James Dio] Stand Up And Shout [Cancer Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable fund dedicated to support research and education that furthers early detection, prevention and treatment of prostate, colon and stomach cancers]. But it is in the works, but we just have to have the time. Maybe next year I'll have some time to get together with doing it. It's such a lot of things with… The bands are always great and the musicians are always great. It's all of the red tape behind it with the managers and the record labels, and that's what we have to deal with. But we will do it. It will be there sometime soon." Back in 2016, Wendy told "Trunk Nation" that both a new version and the old version of "Stars" will be included on the reissue package. "Because the old version was only ever on, I think, vinyl and cassette; it was never on a DVD or on CD," she explained. "And we also have a lot of stuff that was behind the scenes that wasn't heard or seen, which is kind of fun. There's loads of photos we have. I think we have about a hundred signed posters by everyone, and a lot of those people are not alive now. But I just feel we wanna update it a little bit. So instead of just bringing the old stuff up as a reissue, let's update it with a bonus of some kind."

We didn't care what kind of version of metal you liked - whether it was hair bands or thrash or everything in between.

Amidst all the guitar wankering in this song, the ones that actually stand out the most to me are 1.) The Maiden Twin's hauntingly melodic harmonizing. 2.) Eddie Ojeda's simple but heartfelt solo. 3.) Donald "Buck" Dharma's jazzy sounding solo. Everything else sounded like typical shred noise you would've heard on a Saturday afternoon at Guitar Center in 1986. However I will say, Yngwie schooled all of them.

I thought they all nailed it. Some better than others, but throughout - I thought the solos melted well into one another.

Actually. The Maiden duo schooled Malmsteen, because they had already been playing the same way for many years, before Malmsteen even became well known! And even Dio was impressed with Dave Murray and Adrian Smith's melodic guitar playing.

Always thought it was weird that Dio launched this project as a response to no metal artists being asked to be part of "We Are the World," yet Journey was somehow both pop enough to get Steve Perry on that record (which I get) AND metal enough to get Neil Schon on this one (which I really don't). Also, I suspect that at least three of the musicians involved didn't realize that David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls were actors in character. Even though they had seen This Is Spinal Tap before. Probably the guys from WASP.
@TawmisGreybeard4 жыл бұрын
I think despite the seriousness of the famine at the time; I think they recognize that "Spinal Tap" (as a fictional) band had gained enough "popularity" to include them; and they may, even though they're actors, actually have good singing voices. :)
@PatD834 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree that the Spinal Tap guys had every right to be part of this. I'm just saying that when you put them in a room with guys like Blackie Lawless, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Vince Neil, they're far from the most ridiculous characters there. ;)

@TawmisGreybeard2 жыл бұрын
I mean, you can go down the list and find other metal folks who were not there... whether Dio didn't think they'd fit vocally (Lemmy did have a much ... "harsher" growl to his voice that would not have flowed probably with the other vocalists who had styles that were higher pitch/closer to Dio's)... but, yeah - there's plenty of people I would have loved to have been a part of this. My favorite guitarist Criss Oliva (Savatage, RIP) would have been magnificent for the guitar solos, in my opinion - but was either not invited, or invited and declined, or had other plans, who knows why some are not a part. But this, as it is, is a pretty massive cast.

Dee Snider, Ozzy and Bruce Dickinson should have been there. And why were there no female vocalists? Like Lita Ford, Doro Pesch, Ann and Nancy Wilson, etc.....
@TawmisGreybeard3 жыл бұрын
We may never know why the others were not included, since RJD is no longer with us. However, if I were to hazard a guess - I think RJD was looking for vocalists who sounded similar to him - so, while the song was sung by different artists - it was a smooth transition between vocalists. Because over all, most of these vocalists (in this song) stay within the same range. Ann Wilson for example is an extraordinary singer - but her range of her voice is much higher. It could have also been that they were not interested or had scheduling conflicts. I would love to see a new version of something similar to this song - where a bunch of musicians come together and do something like this again. But from what I've heard from Wendy Dio - it will probably never happen - because you have all these artsist from different labels and it apparently creates a bunch of legal issues (which is why, from my understanding, there's never been a pressed CD of this).
@TawmisGreybeard3 жыл бұрын
