It was Roger’s brother who was the actual “Magic Man” she was singing about. He was their manager, and her relationship with him is how Ann & Nancy ended up joining the newly forming band Heart after the dissolution of the band White Heart.

This is a great example why I think Airplay Beats is the preeminent music reaction channel now. Most other reaction channels have to react to a music video, I suppose because they think KZbin being a visual medium, they have to put a video up. But these guys are reacting to the original music. And a lot of reactors chose a music video to react to Heart's Magic Man, and put up a promotional video of the band performing to the radio edit of this song, missing most of the long instrumental of this song, completely missing this songs greatness. In every Led Zeppelin video these guys put up, there is the usual chorus of commenters telling them they have to see this or that live version of the song they just reacted to. But La and Che keep plugging away to the great studio album originals. Which is what a MUSIC reactor is supposed to do. These guys are the GOAT of music reactors on KZbin.

Heart were/are fans of Led Zeppelin and in their live shows back in the late 70s used to do a very good version of Zep's "Rock and Roll".

The "Magic Man" is Mike Fisher, the group's original guitarist. He was Ann Wilson's boyfriend, and she followed him to Canada during the Vietnam War years so he wouldn't get drafted. In 1974, Nancy Wilson (Ann's sister) joined the band and Fisher became their manager and sound engineer. The song is about being madly in love to the point where you are not thinking clearly. The line, "Come on home girl..." relates to Ann Wilson's mother. The line, "Try to understand, Mama, he's a magic man" is Ann's response. Wilson says her mother helped keep her grounded when she was being rather irrational and acting under the spell of her "magic man."

If there is any Heart song where the kudos don't belong with Ann and Nancy, this is it. Sure the vocals are are superb - its Ann Wilson after all, but the shared guitar work of Roger Fisher and Steve Leese on this track, especially that mesmerizing trade off during the solo/breakdown are out of this world. Their work is the creative soul of this song

This song, this first album, took a fantastic local band and sent them on their road to the top of the charts. Before this album and its singles, Heart was one of the hottest acts in the city. Just before they released this, they played any gig in the city they could land and I saw them as many as I could, including one magical night at my high school. Experiencing Heart from five feet away was a joy I'll never forget. It's true, Ann sang in different styles depending on the song, but she was always an incredible singer. A great vocalist knows when to hold back and sing softly and when to blow the gaskets and belt it out. Heart's early sound was Rock mixed with Folk and Gypsy with a strong Led Zeppelin influence. Ann not only sang, she also played flute during several songs. I've so many memories of Heart, before and during the fame, but nothing tops those early years when I could be in the front row of almost any show I caught. I was there enough the sisters and the band recognised me each time. The last time I saw them was August 1978, at an all day concert filled with other bands, in our outdoor football stadium. I've mentioned before my memories of that night so I'll only just say it remains one of my favourite concerts of the hundreds that I've seen.

I bought this album right after it dropped. A guy who worked at the local record shop would always make suggestions about new records he thought I would like. I think the Seattle area radio stations had played "Magic Man" for a while, but that was my only previous exposure to Heart when I heard this album for the first time. Hey guys, been watching y'all for a bit but just recently subscribed. Heart. Ann & Nancy Wilson. This song is from their first album, Dreamboat Annie, and every song on it is excellent! I think you already did Crazy On You, but there are many more...I was going to mention others you should look into, but that would include every song, so... Anyways, I've always had the notion that everyone associated with this album had crushes (or more) for Ann & Nancy; the production and mixing alone are stupendous, especially for an unknown band's first album. As for Ann's vocals, I would probably call them crystal clear, strong when needed, soft at times, but there is ALWAYS that perfect pitch, execution, and clarity. The guitars on this song are NOT all Nancy...I think she was mainly the rhythm beat on this one (which was supposedly inspired by Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song). But Nancy IS indeed a genius on any guitar or style, and she obviously (when you meet her) has a mind that works a bit differently than most people (in the best possible way). I actually got to meet and sit down and chat with them both in the late 90's...and they are as charming in person as they are consummate musical artists. Incidentally, they're both still active, mostly apart recently, although they are said to be working together on new materiel right now. You might consider doing this whole album at once, the songs are kind of connected, and the range of different styles is great to follow through the whole thing. Keep up the great songs and the compact but on-point comments, you're doing it just about perfectly yourselves as reactors!

I second the motion to do the whole album! Dreamboat Annie is my 3rd favorite album (from different artists). I really think you guys would enjoy so much working your way through it. Magic Man, my first introduction to rock music in '76. While Nancy Wilson is a stellar guitarist, she primarily plays rhythm acoustic guitar. Their lead (elec) guitarist was Roger Fisher (until '79), and Howard Leese their keyboardist providing 2nd lead guitar duties. It wasn't till Fisher was booted out that Nancy began providing elec rhythm guitar, debuting on their 5th studio album, BeBe Le Strange.

Back in the 70s, one evening me and a friend dropped six hits of microdot, drove my pickup out in the middle of a tobacco field, opened the doors, cranked the radio and laid down in the truck bed and stared at the stars. This song came on and the stars started pulsing to the beat. When it got to the guitar solo, they started swirling around in a spiral, in time with the riff😆. I rarely see her anymore, but she always brings it up when we do.

Heart is one of those few bands that hit the ground running. First album was multiplatinum, which is true for the majority of their albums. Heart is known for the soaring vocals of Ann Wilson and the sparse, tasteful solo licks of Rodger Fisher. Let's also not leave out the intricate, crescendo segments of their great productions, such as the outro here which lasts half the song. If you're not aware already, the sisters were greatly influenced by Zeppelin. Thus their Kennedy Center tribute to the boys. One advantage you guys as "reactors" have over us old-timers is you have had someone recommend these songs to you so you can put them on and really listen to them for the first time. In my case, I would usually hear a new song on the radio without knowing who or what it was. And sometimes I'd turn the radio on in the middle of something I never heard before. And then I'd have to wait for who knows how long to hear it again! The only way to control the situation was to buy the album. And many times the only songs I really cared for were the ones they played on the radio anyway! But sometimes, you play the album when you got home, and then you would realize that there's much more to it then meets the eye (or the radio). Dreamboat Annie was one of those albums. I was STUNNED at how good each and every song was. Those who didn't buy the album never knew what they were missing. It was a great time to be a teenager, but what you heard was really left up to the Program Directors. There's good and bad about that too. Thankfully we hd 4-5 rock stations in the Bay Area. I wore out the push buttons on my Kraco car radio!

"Love Alive" is an amazingly sweet-yet-rockin' tune. "Kick it Out" is quite kick-ass. "Bebe La Strange" is so full of Ann's awesome personality. "Dreamboat Annie" will put you in Heaven. "Rockin Heaven Down" brings you--JAMMING--back to Earth. They also nail lots of covers of their fav band (and mine, heh), Led Zeppelin!
