pescando It stands out from the rest artistically by far, I've yet to play a game that is as self consuming. Bioshock infinite comes very, very close but thats my opinion which is BS (subjective). I'd love nothing more than to be a kid again and experience the same awe and the same wonder i did back then. Believing it was all real.

This game sparked my love for videogames. (Leaving the next paragraph more for myself than for others but you're welcome to read it.) When I was a kid, my dad bought me a ps1 and one of the games was Heart of Darkness. My dad probably didn't mean to give me such a difficult game for my small brain but I'm absolutely thankful for it. This game taught me the age old mantra of "If at first you don't succeed try, try and try again." at a very young age. Getting eaten alive was pretty violent for a kid to be seeing but I did not see it that way. It was a challenge and I wanted to overcome it. I HAD to overcome it. As for the graphics, they may look outdated now but my memories of it are vivid. From the cutscenes to the actual game itself, my young brain looked at it all in awe because I had only played on a Gameboy color before and I just couldn't imagine the scenes in the story books I read (other than the picture books, of course. I'm looking at you, Tarzan the picture book). Heart of Darkness gave me a heart that conquers. From the smallest of daily challenges to the biggest life-changing decisions, I have my dad and this game to thank for the spark that started it all. I love you, dad.

These animations are insane, they go a long way to selling a 2D game like this. I’m only 15min in but this is just gorgeous, I’ve never seen this game before. Edit: 36min in... dude, nothing repeats. Just new enemies and mechanics every scene. Amazing. Edit 2: just finished. Wow what a beautiful game. It’s like playing a Pixar or Dreamworks movie (although the E rating is a little off lol). The animations, the way the cutscenes work so fluidly with the gameplay, the story, THE ENVIRONMENTS. I’m going onto eBay and picking up a copy of this. Ps2 backwards compatibility don’t fail me now...

Some dude made "hode" which is an open source reverse-engineering of the game engine, so now it can be ported to modern consoles/PCs (hell you could put it on your phone too)
@woohoo24914 жыл бұрын
@The Fallen One I mean if we can extract the assets as standard image files, we could just use AI to upscale all of them and then recompile with the open source engine as an "HD Remaster". We have the engine source, which I assume also means we have the knowledge to know how to extract all the animation frames as images to potentially repack them and use higher quality ones. This isnt the official way to do it but it could be ported to Homebrewed consoles
@woohoo24914 жыл бұрын
@The Fallen One Well it would be legal as long as you own a copy of the game. For example, the build process would extract the images from the game files and do all of it for you, but it would require you to actually own the game files to extract from (AKA own the game) for it to complete This is similar to how the Mario 64 PC port is being made. The game engine itself is open source but you need to supply your own ROM file for it to compile and play. This requires you to own a copy of the game so it's totally legal to do

I always thought this game has that 90s pixar movie look. The game looks and plays amazingly well especially compared to its time and even today. The animation quality and the attention to the detail is mind blowing.

The smooth sprite animation certainly gives it a bit of an 'old animated disney film' feel to it.

An ambitious game with an extremely long development cycle (or hell in this case) of 6 years, with numerous delays and platform changes, initially announced for Panasonic 3DO, but finally released for PS1, Saturn, PC, an even an Atari Jaguar version announced, however, that console was not commercially viable. With a great hype behind it, but by the time it got released, 2D platforming was dying. Luckily, the end result was amazing.

There should be more protagonists like Andy. Not afraid to have fun, relax and be a human, never letting himself beat down by others, and extremely inventive, creative and intelligent. Not exactly a boy genius, but a boy who kept his creativity unsoiled.

One of the best games ever, i've had so much fun with this in the 90's.. This was waaay ahead it's time, we need more games like this nowadays.. The intro, and all the animations.. It was mindblowing back then:) My PC can't really handle these "high quality" in-game videos in those times, so i watched all of it over and over, cause of freezing, but i didn't care:D And the sounds.. still give me shivers after 20 years :o This was a masterpiece! Thanks for the great memories!

One of the reasons I still have my ps3, so I can still play this game. Ah sweet childhood memories. Damn video games where much more brutal and specially way more creative back then. (except you, modern mortal combat, you are still doing fine)

They don't make platforms like this today. Great production value. The soundtrack alone is pretty amazing, it makes the whole game feel like a Spielberg/Williams thing. How many games today book the London symphony for a soundtrack?

I remember as a kid that I used to play the demo version of this on PC and found it really challenging to get past just the first 5-10 screens. This game had a very distinct, eerie vibe that I actually enjoyed as much then as now. It stuck out to me then as it does now. I really enjoyed playing the demo version as a kid, even though it was hard and I actually found it somewhat scary and disturbing. I still think about this game every now and then and that just goes to show what a peculiar piece of gaming gem this really is.

MAN!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE SEEN THAT GAME BEFORE!!!! Back in around 2001-2003, I saw my cousin playing it on his computer (and having quite the hard time at it). I never knew its name, nor have I seen or heard about it anywhere else since then. The only memory I had about what the game was like was that you played as a little guy around some reddish rocky wasteland with large creature fossils and the enemies were some frantic dark things which nobody could quite tell what exactly they were. I have just seen this video on my KZbin recommendations, and the cover, together with the game's title, got me curious. I had never seen that opening cutscene, but as soon as the actual gameplay started, I thought "Wait...". By the time you got to the third screen I knew it could only be this one game! Thanks a lot for the upload! I think I might get that game and play it myself, like I always wanted to when I was little.
