Lots of people at the time looked down on Elvis’ Vegas era (back then it was seen as where stars go to fade away), and critics hated it. But the band he put together, and later toured with, were incredible musicians and backup singers. In hindsight his Vegas era is looked on in a positive way, and of course he’s defined the Vegas image.

Hi Dani , Great reaction, there's always something special about seeing an artist revisit their first major hit. I know I've mentioned it a few times before but I CAN HELP (4.07clip) would be a great song to react to. BILLY SWAN who wrote & had a big hit with the song actually worked for Elvis as a gateman @ Graceland in the 1960's before his own career took off. SWAN also did a cover of "Don't be cruel" and then Elvis covered I CAN HELP. "Boogie Dani" would enjoy this one! XOXO from rainy England.

Elvis in command. The most dynamic performer. That James Button Telecaster always leading the King. The drummer Ronnie Tutt said playing for Elvis was Ike playing for a burlesque dancer. Love ve that his band is are all alive still.

Heartbreak hotel was Elvis's first RCA song and recorded just after his 21st BD .It was based on a true story of a man that committed suicide in a hotel after his lover left him and a newspaper headline was Heartbreak Hotel. Some might have thought Elvis's first RCA song would have been R&R but instead he did this slow blues song it went to no1 in the US and no2 in the UK but didn't feature on his first 2 RCA albums.

My Aunt was so in love with him. Whenever we drove by Graceland she had to point out where The King lived. She cried so much when he died. Everyone from anywhere near Memphis remembers exactly where they were when he died. I was at work as a guard listening to the radio that night. He passed in the hospital he was born in, and is the same hospital I was born in.

He must have been bored stiff with Vegas after the first couple of seasons. In this performance, you could tell that he wasn’t all that motivated. Elvis needed challenges, because he was easily bored. 637 shows (NOT 837 as the statue at the Westgate Hotel - formerly Hilton, states), in the same effing showroom from 1969-1976, was hardly «yes-I’m-really-looking-forward-going-to-work-tonight»-stuff. In retrospect, he needed new, creative people around him, people who could bring out the enormously talented artist that he was.
