The “Heartbreaker” solo has long been known as “the impossible solo” due to it’s fast and chaotic playing style, especially during the unaccompanied section.
In this video lesson, I will demonstrate how to not only play both solo breaks, but how to make sense of them as well.
You will notice that the tuning of the solo is a little over a quarter-step sharp. This is probably from them speeding up the tape slightly after recording and might explain how crazy fast the solo is.
I will be using standard tuning throughout the lesson though. If you want to play along with the solo, you will need to either raise your standard tuning pitch up about 60 cents, or detune the recording in software like “Transcribe” by Seventh String.
These solos are THE most requested solos in the history of GL365. I have avoided it for long enough, so I hope you guys enjoy FINALLY learning one of the most well known and most revered guitar solos ever recorded by the great Jimmy Page! #heartbreakerguitarlesson #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #guitarcovers

I also thought Pages's solo was a little sloppy, but only after years of playing myself and being able to hear his flubbs. I have thought on many occasions maybe his strings were to high off the fret board making it tough to play or, he was just jamming and it was recorded and he decided to keep it because it says so much by being a little impefect...but, it is perfect.

I played it back in '91, at a church function of all places, lol. We billed ourselves as Zed Leppelin. No KZbin back then, had to learn completely by ear off the record, (which I'd done some years previously while in high school, around '82). To be fair, I'd got the last bit wrong by ending the double stops at the 2nd fret. I don't know if anyone noticed. Great job!

@@GuitarLessons365SongLessons Agree with Nate. I have learned alot from Carl over the past 2-years, especially when jamming with bandmates and someone says hey do you know this. So I pull out my mobile, go on KZbin, and chances are that Carl or someone has a lesson which I can review 1-2 times in 5-minutes and get the key and phrasings and then go from there. But I will say, Carl is so laid back in his teaching style that it does not get confusing with technical, which is not so bad if you understand theory and he can provide such instruction, but he get's to the point for people who just want to learn quickly. Tx Carl.

I've been searching for accurate tabs or a plausible lesson on this solo for ages. I gave up in disappointment long ago, and forgot about it completely, which was a shame as this song is nothing but my favorite song ever. I would show videos of this solo to my friends and tell them I would learn it one day in hopes this would once come true, and taught myself to play guitar with the ultimate goal of learning this masterpiece. All I can say is thank you. Learning this solo was a dream come true for me, and would've been impossible without you. You're the absolute best out there man, and wish you nothing but the best in your guitar journey and personal success. The creative mind of Page and his journey in music, as well as his ability, and nicking blues licks at blinding speed, along with a sleazy, rock distorted swag that every guitarist on the planet payed attention to when it came out in '69' . At the beginning, it sometimes took me several weeks just to figure out one extensive solo. Also remember that Page never played it the same and often sloppily, so if you mess up, just say, Hey, just staying true to the master. Good luck.

Carl, I just wanted to thank you for all the videos you have on here. I subscribed a while back and have learned a few from you. Got hit by a car in April when a senior citizen got his foot stuck on the brake then got it stuck on the gas pedal and backed up into me full throttle at a gas station which nearly blew up. Fractured my left ribs and got knocked in the air about 8 feet and landed on my right shoulder. I ruptured 2 tendons in my rotator cuff on my right shoulder (I am a righty) and just had surgery October 16th and for therapy I've been learning every day for the past week from you (PT RECOMMENDED) . I'm mainly learning Led Zep with your videos. I also have a neuromuscular disease covered under the MDA in which I could hardly feel my fingers. You're an incredible teacher. I thank you so much. This is an iconic lead that we all muff at some point. Once again you break it down and really nailed the sections so that I could grab the bits I was blowing. Now just get your fingers flowing and not thinking! BTW the behind the nut is much easier with the Dragon tele I think he used for the recording. The G on a Les Paul is also deeper to pull. The Strat is the hardest. Of course you can just double bend up at the 5th? You Carl fans buck up and donate or buy his swag!!!

I was thinking the same thing, he had to be using the tele. Tele's have a big scoop behind the nut and less string tension there that makes that bend trick easy. Impossible on the guitar I'm using... Floyd Rose locking nut - Gotta go to the whammy - haha

Don't sweat it. Page never did it the same way twice. I saw them three times back in the day in Seattle. The only one on the stage that knew what was up was John Paul Jones. Every one else was drunk, stumbling, missing ques, out of tune, and generally sounding pretty sloppy. A great studio band, but not so hot live. Just my opinion.

Close is good enough on this solo. As long as you get the opening lick right and the bluesy descend, no one will ever know the difference.

I think Jimmy did this solo to add a bit of "wow factor" to what otherwise was just one more blooz tune. Remember, he had to fire a serious shot with Hendrix, Beck & many others breathing on his heels. The thing that everyone misses about it is the sense of outright Rock 'n Roll FUN it entails in learning it. And Jimmy himself would say right to your face that it's SUPPOSED to be an "open interpretation" piece, with YOUR PERSONAL BITS put into it. You can take it as basic as possible (close to the record), or go bananas with a 20 minute meltdown of your amp. Yes, it's sloppy. But look at it for the FUN!

Colin me Depends in what sense you mean... as lead guitarists, yes. If Jimmy was thinking to add this solo to prove himself a better lead guitarist than them then he was misguided and failed. However, I’m pretty sure Jimmy wasn’t thinking that way. What Jimmy was way ahead of the others at (in my opinion) was in composition, riff and song writing, production, developing new styles/genres and playing the right thing for the song. I’m pretty sure that would have been what would have been in his mind when he added this solo section.

@@davidburke2132 He was better at being part of a band and composing as such. Mr Page said that Hendrix was a genius in the studio and created some techniques way before anyone else. Especially in his use of stereo.

@@colinme2672 What planet did you come from? Page was the Number 1 studio guitarist in Britain. He literally, punched up every recording made at that time. That would include John Mayall, who gave Beck his start. Hendrix was not much of a musician, or human being for that matter. Drunk, drug addicted, and a woman beater. He left Mitchell and Redding in the lurch, without bothering to tell them he formed another band. Still owes them money.
