Thank you so much! This video is so inspiring. I've been bogged down by the whole "write to trend" speeches lately, it has had me questioning whether I wanted to keep on writing in YA. I am starting on Amazon Ads though, and it is a learning curve so it's nice to hear from someone who doesn't use AMS and is still successful (I do have two videos on my journey with AMS ads for those who are interested in that process). I'm still figuring out my social media marketing methods as I'm not making a big impact there yet.

They say the best advertising for your last book is the release of your newest book. That seems to hold true with your experience. Seems like 60K word books might be a sweet spot to ensure frequent releases of new books, depending on genre and the size of the story itself.

Congrats on all your success. You deserve it for all your hard work and perseverance. I wish I could make money by going wide, but every time I've tried, it's been disastrous. I'm the main breadwinner in our family, so losing several hundred dollars a month really hurts. The only way I make any decent money is when my books are in KU. So, I have to go where the money is for the time being. Anywho, you're such an inspiring person/author/mentor and you give me hope that if I just stick to it, I can achieve all my goals. Thanks for all you do.

I would like to see an editing cost video. On average we come across editing cost around .04 a word. This times 60k words is about 2400 a book. So you have an avg of $2500 on edits, how many books are you averaging into that figure? We are learning as we go and editing cost as well as quality has been our biggest hurdle hands down

Wanna know how to make more money from books you already published? Publish your books in French or Spanish. This of course is tricky because 1.) you need to find bilingual translators and make sure the writing is not grammatically incorrect or actually a whole novel about picking your nose. 2.) You probably should give credit to the translator by either putting it as a co-written work/translated. You as the main author, then Miss Jane Doe as the translator. Then I would probably even go a step further and give a share of whatever earnings I made from the translated version only and spilt profits 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 depending on what you would wanna do. Or if it's a professional then you may just have to pay them by the hour or something.

My favorite self published author Quinn loftis, you are good too btw, also seems to struggle with 35:00. She has been writing her werewolf series for years now and as much as I love the series and characters I think she should wrap it up soon. Currently she is writing a new series which I haven't read yet. (Haven't had time) But I think at some point in her writing career she was also going through this too. Personally I think 9-10 books is good for a really long series and then starting something brand new. Everyone is different though.

I love your advice! There's so much out there thats well meant but ultimately not going to work for everyone. The danger of writing to the market is that you're likely to miss the wave. Or you're going to write so fast that it's going to be poor quality. Personally, I wouldn't read an author that put a book out every month. I'd just assume it was crap.
@mestimac4 жыл бұрын
Okay, I want to qualify my comment because I feel like a jerk for that last sentence. I think it's definitely possible to draft a novel in a month. But, I'm sceptical about a novel going from concept to being published in that time without having quality control issues. I've read a lot of books, both self and traditionally published, that seem rushed. The concept may be good, but they lack the development that more time would give them. Many of them are very popular, though, so it might just be me.

I have put out my book THE FIRST HORSE PEOPLE, it's the complete history of the Sarmatian knights and Amazon women. They are the ancient grandfathers and grandmothers of the Poles Czechs and Ukrainians. We were the very first horse people and the Roman's got tired of us raiding them and forced us to be their cavalry. They took the sons very young to serve the Roman's army and the daughters were forced to be the warriors and defenders of the tribe. They didnt marry until the men eventually returned to the tribe, they had arranged marriages. They found their tombs 2yrs ago and have our DNA. The Roman's have busts of the Sarmatian faces 5000 years ago and my family looks like these guys 5000 years ago. I found out my last name means the eyebrow bridge of the Sarmatians. I will be going to the Polish festival in Chicago come September to promote my book. POLISH AMERICANS have no idea of this ancient history of theirs.

Hi Sarra. I realize this video is a year old but I just discovered you and I'm so glad I did. One of the things I was curious about is how much you spend on taxes, roughly? I'm told that authors, whether traditionally or self published, are considered free lance workers and have to take care of their taxes on their own. Otherwise, I'd just be interested to know how you handle that aspect of the money. Thank you!

Are these gross numbers? Did you find the tax burden difficult in the beginning?
@HeartBreathings Жыл бұрын
Yes these are gross earnings with a discussion of what I spent on ads in there if I remember correctly. I didn't find the taxes difficult because I just put 30% of everything that comes in into a money market account and pretend it doesn't exist to me until I need to pay it out every quarter. So important to just put it away right away! Then at the end of the year, I will take anything left over and put it in my savings.

I actually started in 2010, but I think it helped in some ways and made it a lot more challenging in others! There was a lot less competition back then, but there were also literally zero tools. No formatting software, no ways to advertise, and no one to help guide you or show you how they did it. It was like the wild west, haha. I think the market has gotten a lot harder because of Kindle Unlimited, honestly, but there is still room for authors to have a great career no matter when they start!
