I sure did enjoy this guys. Thank you for taking time to listen. I loved so much of what you both had to say. My dad was not around at all. My grand parents raised me. I carried a lot of anger towards him. It took a long time to realize he was 17 years old and had no idea how to be a father. He was an alcoholic as well. After becoming a father and an alcoholic I had to look differently at how I viewed my father. Keep up the good work. What you’re doing matters. Take good.

Thank you sir, for an amazing song. I listen to music looking for the feel and especially the lyrics. This has become one of my top few songs of all time. I enjoyed this reaction as well. I found the song by accident, and once I spent the whole evening earlier this week listening to it and learning to play it, I texted my kids to listen to it (there is a lot of overlap in our musical tastes, and we frequently recommend music to each other). I then wanted to see others hearing it for the first time. So many of the lyrics speak to me in ways that few other songs ever have. I was SO disappointed that so few reactors have done this song!

One of the hardest lessons I learned was no longer viewing my parents as "Mom and Dad" but instead looking at them as just Jewell and Antonio. Once I started doing that in my 30's it was so much easier to find acceptance and reconciliation and forgiveness. Because adulting is really hard. Being a parent is really hard. I have two daughters who probably feel that way about me "the only man who ever broke their heart." This song has become my manifesto and recognizing that I couldn't blame my parents for my issues. They are mine. My dad was a great dad, but he was flawed, like eveyone else. Yes, he was a difficult man to please and I missed the mark. My dad was latino- I'm whiter looking than snow (mom is Irish_), I'm handy but not a great carpenter or mechanic like him. I'm gay - Not exactly what he wanted for me. My dad was a very devout person... I tried. But I failed. But I never doubted that he loved me, in the very principled way, but until I was in my forties I never thought he liked me. Born and raised in Texas.....

Mike is the greatest story teller of a song there ever has been he can paint such a beautiful picture of a song it can bring you to tears of joy or ball like a baby with its meaning and side ways has so many great truths in it but the one line that hit home harder than any line has ever hit home when its talks about being just like the thing you hated about your father and he being the only man to break your heart just v unbelieveable

This song grabbed me so hard when I first heard it! I immediately bought the album and listened to this over and over. It has been on my playlist rotation ever since. I am so glad you guys are reacting to this. This is so much my life, my relationship with my Dad, his life, my son and his mental health struggles. My son looks just like my Dad. Both had their own demons and struggles to address them. I miss my dad every day. He is the only man that could ever lay a hand on me and not pull back a stump. He tried so hard to never do so and I know he felt like a failure every single time he lost control. It is so hard to break the cycle of abuse but my Dad did the yeoman’s work to do so. Even with our faults I love and miss him every single day.

My goodness…. Where do I start. I meet Travis through a mutual friend and this guy had me hooked from the first lyric, and I’m so glad to call him a friend. Then comes to you two, some of the mentions of struggles with father and sons, I feel it and still deal with it to this day, you two guys I’d love to sit around a campfire with! Then comes the mental heath thing, I always thought it was a coop out. Man was I ever wrong, I’ve been struggling with it the last two years and I try not to let the bad days win. MP said it best I believe the quote was the one that holds the grudge holds the burden, so deep and true. I try not to be bias but T is one of if not one of the best songwriters in the business! So glad I came across this video. Thank you!

Wow, you guys have no idea how much I needed this. Or maybe you do. I'm also 36 years old. I have two boys, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old. Growing up my dad was the greatest father in the world. He was my hero and I never had to wonder if he loved me or was proud of me. But since I've become a father we've just sorta drifted apart. Some of it is my fault, some isn't. But this discussion helped me realize that even though not all of it is in my control -- my reaction to it is. I think it's time I start being open and honest about that.

16:05 Very true. It’s so ingrained in men that they don’t even think about anger as an emotion. They would never say “why are they so emotional” about an angry person (like they would about someone crying). “Emotional” does not include anger in their minds.

What an amazing heart poured song here. I met Travis about 20 years ago when I moved in Nashville with an artist and we had open mic nights there. He stood out right from then as a very gifted song writer. "Black" and his other song "Lucky One" were my favorites back then before he wrote, Riser, Better Boat, What we ain't got, Human, Underdogs, Learning to live alone, Just to list a few but just that list if he did a greatest hits album would have many top hits. This guy writes from his soul and you feel it in every lyric. Gifted special artist the world needs to hear more from.

Man did I just go down a rabbit hole. I thought I was clicking on some guy talking about how to use open tuning, then I heard Travis talk about getting out of rehab and writing an album, so I had to hear some of his music. And then I saw Palmisano had him on recently, and found my way back to you guys. Been trying to write some songs myself these last couple years, and as someone who grew up without a dad in the picture mostly, even though he lived a few blocks away with his new family, I'm lettin' some tears out on a Wednesday afternoon.

I am 41 years old, it took me until I was 35 to realise that I don't need my dads approval for how I live my life. I am still working on being a better dad to my three girls and a better husband to my wife. We are all works in progress. We just need to realise we are human and we all make mistakes and we need to forgive ourselves so we can move on and do better for everyone.

When I was in my late teens early twenties I recall saying I wanted kids so I could treat them the way my father did to me. That wasn’t a good thing. When my kids were born i did a complete 180 and I promised them I wouldn’t be like my dad, though in some ways I still am. This whole song is relatable. I feel that line about his father is the centre of this song, the lyrics before and after come from that place….they are all related.

and you were talking about mental health i\m not sure if this will help you or not but when i was growing up there were thing i hated about my father the way he sometimes talked to my mother and me and sometimes the way he treated us don\t get me wrong he was a good man but because of things that his mother put him through. i was married to my first wife and i treated her like shit but i didn't realize it at the time but i was the same way with friends to it was i was right and every body that didn't see it my way was wrong . so when she finely left me i was devastated . And it took this young minister talked to me and he showed me i was everything i hated about my father i was just like him and once i seen it it has done more for me than any other thing in my life i hope it will help you like it did me. And to let you know my father never told me he love me or never said good job im proud of you and it cstill hurts so bad and at 89 ill never hear it cause my mom died in 2019 and a year latter my dad has demenctia and i have to change his diaper and bath him anhd he fights me swinging and kicking and he hates me but he is my father and i love hyim its the hardest thing ive ever had to do. But its not the father that tells you he loves you and you did a great job that make you a man it how you learn from your mistakes and what you correct in your life and the way you treat others that makes you a man

Just about every religion creates a patriarchy. As long as we think , subconsciously, or consciously, as our god being a male figure, the worth of women is undervalued. So everybody has a daddy issue. I grew up without religion, and only clearly understood this truth when I was older than you two. I spent most of my life blaming my father for a lot of things. If it’s any comfort, once your father dies, he will return to the saint you thought he was when you were a child. And if it’s any consolation, we can consider ourselves fortunate to have the time and energy to ponder the inward journey. Many, many, people in this world are struggling to survive infancy, survive childhood deadly diseases and violence. Billions are desperate for drinking water, hundreds of millions are struggling to survive the bombs being rained on their loved ones. In that sense, we can consider ourselves lucky to just be alive.😊

My only daddy issue is that he’s dead. He was a hero while alive, he’s patience after being in a wheel chair for so many years was unparalleled. However, it did take me a long time to realize he was a very flawed man even in his greatness. He was always a great father though.
