New to HOI4? This Strategy game can be confusing (at first) so don't give up! Once you get it (and you will - see all the feedbacks) it's a LOT of fun. Today I'll help guide you through your first invasion (as Germany into Poland). The video will assume you know either watched my first tutorial, or know those foundational concepts.

Finally a thorough, detailed tutorial for complete beginners. This and the previous video. Both hoi4 and eu4 have been collecting dust in my Steam library for too long now, around 4-5 years and I've had way too many attempts to try and understand these Paradox productions, but failed and gave up every time. Thank you my friend for providing me with something I've been looking for for all these years. You've earned yourself another subscriber. Keep on doing what you're doing, I'll gladly watch any hoi4 content that you post.

Very kind words - my game also gathered dust for at least 2-3 years before i bit the bullet and after what 100 hours of messing around dying to everything without having a clue why, I finally began to grasp the basics. Not everyone has 100 hours to throw away on a game they may not even like - I'm glad I've been able to help so many people in such a similar boat.

I've had this game in my library for a minute, wanting to play it but worried about the learning curve with my limited free time. I have to say, watching your last video, and now this one. Yep, me too. Took me a lot of tutorials and searching help to finally figure the basics, spread across couple years. It's the reason why I made it. I thought "I can help get across how this game and the UI works and help a few people, I'll be pleased." Hopefully I've saved many more a lot of frustration, that causes many to pick up, and put the game back down again after multiple hours of "what's this, how can I get my army to move, why is everything just dying!?"

Another great tutorial video! Don't think I have ever considered buying a game this complex, but your tutorials certainly help a new player to learn the basics. Seriously considering taking the plunge and entering the realm of HOI IV! Happy New Year ! :)

Coming from Vic II, EU IV and the other Paradox classics, HoI IV has always been a little intimidating to me, so it's nice to see a structured and thorough approach to a tutorial like this. It still takes some time for all the elements to come together and click.

I wish you'd tell my girlfriend that! Everytime I try show her my games, "look, watch this bit.... Look!" she says "very nice, but can we go now?" And falls asleep or disappears out of sight!

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I kept struggling with invading Poland, since I didn't have an army on the Maginot line and I would get wrecked by France, and reach Berlin before I could get my troops there

I had HOI4 sitting on my steam library for 3 years. Tried to get into the game two or three times but never been able. Both of your tutorials are very helpful. Thank you. However, over these years, although not playing it, I collected most DLC's 😅 so, after learning the basics, how do you recommend that I activate the DLC for a playthrough? Do you recommend I turn on all of them or is there any particular order to start learning (ex: first start with X, then Y...)?

When first starting out, I presume you’d wanna turn off dlcs for the sake of simplicity

Just to point out and I am sure you know this, but your armor will only move as fast as the slowest unit in a army group. So if you mix tanks/trucks they move at the rate of ground troops. Its usually best to separate them into two divisions with a army type general and panzer general.

Loved watching your previous video! Very relaxing and informative, I don't even want to play HOI4, I just enjoy seeing it's complexity and you're doing a fine job explaining it. Where's your accent from by the way?

Thanks for your kind words. I'm from Yorkshire, England. When I very first started making KZbins (another channel) I did try and "speak proper" for a while, but soon discovered it's actually quite hard (really hard) to try and speak the queen's English, when one is from the opposite end of the country, and the accent changes every 15-20 miles along the way. I also found leaving little mistakes and "ummms" is a mixed blessing. There's a lot to be said on editing videos, over editing them, and doing them live, and some people need everything in 5 words without pauses, or they ain't interested, and some (the minority sadly) like stuff that's nuanced and with a bit of detail, and if it brushes up against side topics, a quick mention too. I remember a time when almost everything was like that, but trying to understand things was replaced with trying to memorize stuff people no longer understand. The "what button do I press?" Vs a "why am I pressing it" - so I appreciate that you, and so many others who found this video, are still from a mindset that actually wants to understand stuff.

I finished this tutorial after following the first one completely. I noticed in this one that towards the end you got a lot faster and it was difficult at times to see where you were clicking. The explanations weren't as detailed as in the beginning. Anyway you mentioned there is a follow up tutorial to this one, any idea when that one will be released?

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. I realised I was picking up the pace, but neglected to consider some people like yourself will have been following every click, even hours into the video. This was poor judgement on my part, so thanks for letting us know. I will look at creating at least 2 more tutorials in the coming days... My intention wasn't really to create a full-length "copy this and you'll win" type video, rather a tutorial that by the end, would have most people in touch with most of the game mechanics - and clearly I've not yet achieved that. I'll try to get a more detailed tutorial out again (this week) that focuses on the 3 main aspects of battle (air, navy and land). I realise I have done a fair bit on land already. I hope to see you there when it happens

I am brand new but doesn't Germany have a 'treaty' with Russia where Germany takes west and Russia takes East Poland?

Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, at 24:45 you can see the AI has completed it as part of the Historical AI Focus option before the game starts :)

Puddit says it better than I could, but I want to expand on that, and say the treaty that divides Poland is one of the focus tree decisions that you can choose to make (or avoid) under normal 1936 play... Personally it's something I tend to avoid (because I want it all, the ENTIRE WELD!)

Good feedback - I learnt a lot in the comments from posts like yours. I'm planning to do a new tutorial for 2024, after the next update drops, and it's going to be similar in pace, to allow people to follow along, and learn as we go, until alless of Europa und Russia ist unter Kontroll! I've got 616 hours of gameplay , there is two parts i struggle with 1) invading the UK . 2) invading USSR . ..The UK has both air and naval supremacy. I've invaded Netherlands as early as 1937 as to get the Dutch East Indies and all the rubber for my fighters , to build so many fighters to face the RAF later , but still struggle with my navy even with mine laying U-Boats .

I'm going to be making some more HOI4 content very soon - I'm currently studying many of the VERY in-depth game mechanics, and deciding which ones are worth mentioning, and how best to do so (presenting long lists of spreadsheets isn't always the best nor most exciting method - even if it is the most accurate). I want people to take away knowledge they can actually use, like helpful rules of thumb that work 99% of the time, rather than get bogged down with very specific details, that bore most of us anyway, and frankly never mean much beyond the next regular patch anyway, as these stats are always tinkered with. Ultimately everyone watching the video, will wind up able to design their own division templates (rather than just look up "best template", and they will really understand WHY.) By the end of it, we will all know the important to do (and NOT do) things with templates, that at first glance, may not be so obvious. This is closely linked with combat width and terrain types - and I'm still figuring the best way to share this info, without getting drawn to deep into boring details, but at the same time, skipping over too much isn't helpful either - one way or another, I'll come up with something. At some point I need to make a series of tutorials that takes the player from beginner - intermediate, and this video might just be the first in that series - I just haven't quite decided the best way to go about this yet. I don't know what dark witchcraft you employed, but I want to know how you managed to launch an attack on Poland and not suddenly have everyone from Lichtenstein to Koala Lompur suddenly invading you with attrition-ignoring invincible death stacks and knocking Germany out of the fight by day 3. This game would have probably been fun had there been any sense of believable diplomacy, the AI didn't cheat to high heaven, and there was even a basic effort made to adhere to the actual history of World War II. Gave up after 80 hours of trying this mod and that to fix the game. One of my worst Steam purchases to date.
