Refrain:

@@angelofdeath1896 Bismarck? An Imperialist? A paper tiger? Dunno, he kinda knew to toss his weight around when it mattered and was famous for NOT being interested in pursuing Colonial plans. Hell, he even held the Berlin Conference to make sure the others wouldn't go at one anothers' throats over Colonial ambitions.
Technically this was also sung by the Kriegsmarine in WW2

@@thatguyriverside Which is why the first verse in this clip, threw me off, because it starts off with the 3rd verse of the song, Kommt die Kunde, dass ich bin gefallen, Dass ich schlafe in der Meeresflut. Weine nicht um mich, mein Schatz, und denke, Fur das Vaterland da floss sein Blut. The very first verse of this song is supposed to go: "Heute wollen wir en Liedlen singe, Trinken wollen wir den kuhlen wein. Und die Glaser sollen dazu klingen, Denn es muss, es muss geschiden sein.
@loogi_101 Жыл бұрын
@@thatguyriverside He never did argue against what you claim. He merely stated a fact, as it was composed by Hermann Loens in 1910. Whether or not it was sung during WW2 is out of the regarding the initial statement. And that it was sung in WW2 is also a fact, or at least putative, not necessarily a hypothetical/ supposed matter either. Hermann Nielebock's 1939 rendition became popular during the Second World War

Doesn't gegen mean against? I think it better translates to "We travel against England"
@oceanichimself46032 жыл бұрын
@@SurvivorMaster In the end German has changed significantly since the early to mid 1900's. I'm pretty sure "Fahren" is faring, and "gegen" is against. So it'd be "We're faring against England" if I'm right, which I'm not sure if I am but I gave it a shot.
@anglishbookcraft15162 жыл бұрын
@@SurvivorMaster I knew that but didn’t know why I didn’t put it. Travel is a Latin loanword, while fare is the original word for it. Farewell, seafaring, wayfarer
@renatopastronjevic16862 жыл бұрын
i think the best translation is we are sailing towards England
@florpyjohnson95312 жыл бұрын
@@oceanichimself4603 "fahren" translates basically to driving, like you'd say "ich fahre nach berlin", but it's not limited just to driving. it could be sailing, biking, etc. and with "gegen" you kind of have to understand german to be able to understand what it means; it's hard to put it into english exactly, but against is good enough. the full statement is "Denn wir fahren gegen Engelland". in this case, "denn" could mean because or then. most likely because. "Because we're sailing against England" is probably the most accurate it could get, but again, you have to understand german for it to make sense totally. since i've learned german mostly by listening and watching movies and such, and less reading, i find myself saying things in german like i say things in english, just knowing the meaning and not having to translate it to english first. then when i translate it to english to tell someone else what it means, it makes no sense. learning languages is cool. i think everyone should learn at least two languages fluently, it makes you understand language, grammar, and everything so much more, and plus, it's pretty fun. at least when you're not just reading from a textbook and writing it down.
