By far the greatest drama/crime/heist film to ever be created. The character development is done so well, that you don't even realize that it's nearly a 3 hour long movie. Michael Mann did such a great job with Neil & Vincent, that at the end of the movie, Vincent actually feels like he lost a little bit of himself, when he killed Neil. In a sense they were spirit animals, but on opposite sides of the law. That level of respect for one another makes the film what it is. By far, my favorite film of all time.

Probably my favorite movie of all time. I have yet to see any other film do what this one did with it's protagonist and antagonist. How they are depicted as two sides of the same coin and share some kind of bond or brotherhood if you will. Both operating on opposite sides of the spectrum but seem like they understand each other and where the other is coming from. Having that respect for each other but know they won't hesitate to put the other one down when they have the chance. Also I like how at the diner scene they talk about what if they got each other boxed in when at the end of the movie they are literally boxed in, surrounded by some box like structures as Vincent takes out Neil. This movie could have got an Oscar for the directing, the score, or the cinematography. Such a crime it received no nominations.
@andrewflores67928 жыл бұрын
Also Christopher Nolan was definitely influenced by this movie. Especially when portraying Batman and Joker's relationship in The Dark Knight. The whole "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object" theme. Just like this movie, we see what happens when an unstoppable force like Vincent, who's loud, fast, and on the edge, meets an unmovable object like Neil, who's so thorough and discipline with everything he does.

lots of foreshadowing in that remark, because Al and Neil do fall in brotherly love with one another. Mann chooses his words very carefully. I love how the cons repeating the term 'brother' to one another puts the word in my mind at that beautifully portrayed tragic moment at the end.

Always loved that movie! Great choice for a dissection. Well I heard that Michael Mann decided to use the actual (high quality) location sound recording for the shootout scene - so the echoing from buildings and the actual sounds are all real. It makes all the difference! Also love the fact that this movie was able to unite two screen giants just at the right time: Pacino and DeNiro. They more than deliver. Great dissection as always! Looking forward to your video about Kurosawa!

I think this really shows how great of a director Mann is and how much care and compassion he put into this project. It seems and feels so realistic. De Niro and Pacino were great in this, I think this is the first time they shared the screen, they obviously were both in Godfather II, but it was awesome to see some of the best actors of all time "go at it." I'm really excited to share the Kurosawa video, I think it's going to turn out really well, and is far and away my most ambitious project yet!

I saw Heat in theaters when it was released. Just a random choice of a movie to go to that night. I continue to watch it over and over. One of the best movies of all time. In terms of structure and all else, I personally believe it was useful that Mann got to make this movie "twice". I'm sure he refined all aspects of his focus after LA Takedown. I have never liked the very ending of the movie. What a letdown. Does not fit the tone of what "should" have happened imo. And what "should" have happened out there under the runway lights between Pacino and DeNiro? Pacino... Vincent, should have only wounded DeNiro. And DeNiro.... Neil... should have then hobbled over to that waiting getaway plane on the tarmac and gotten in that plane. What would we have then been left with? Vincent's life in shambles. He has lost his umpteenth wife, his step-daughter has attempted suicide, his relentless pursuit of "bad guys" has all but ruined his personal life... his cocaine use is escalating (yes... how many of you have picked up on the fact that Vincent was a coke user?... Check out Pacino/Manns conversations about this aspect.... Vincent's increasing out-of-control cocaine rants in Las Vegas and at the car-stripping place....). Vincent's life is a shambles..... and now at the end of the film after the day of carnage and chaos..... DeNiro gets away (in my chosen scenario). And what of Neil? (DeNiro). By living, he makes the plane. As it takes off into the night, looking out the window, Neil sees the hotel a few blocks away. The fire trucks, the chaos, maybe even the car with Eady still sitting in it. Neil's life is a shambles too. His friends dead (except Chris), his identity out in the public eye, his hope of going away with Eady to finally construct some sort of normal life..... poof. Never gonna happen. If Neil had lived, both Neil and Vincent would have lost. Which is sort of one the points of the movie...... lives that go nowhere. As it is, the ending of the movie was just a tidy Miami Vice "please the sponsers" ending. And just think... if Neil had escaped, there would be SO much rich material for a many-years later sequel. Chances are, Neil would be restless out there in another country and would come back to LA to engage in more scores. And Hanna.... well.... with no other life option, Vincent would still be out there busting bad guys. A MOST intriguing setup for a sequel. But no, Mann chose to let Vincent kill Neil. Makes no sense for THIS movie. Maybe Mann could reshoot the last three minutes and then give us a pleasing sequel.
@I_like_turtles_676 жыл бұрын
vast wasteland Hot the nail on the head. I agree 100% with your ending. As many times as they talked about walking away from everything. Neil never has to do it. Instead he's killed by a coke head cop who's going to move onto the next crew, next wife.... Unless the sequel has Hanna hunts down Chris. Tells him he wished he had not caught them coming out of the bank..... Tells Chris what happened to Neil. Chris can kill him for killing his friend or work together puting their own crew together. LOL.

What do you think about the black guy(I forgot his name) who's on parole, joins the heist and gets killed. What was really the point of adding him to the movie? I guess I appreciate having the driver have a backstory but on the other hand... why?
@solveigmortensen26087 жыл бұрын
Nikki's reply says it well, but also apparently Mann interviewed some people with real life prison/jail history and went to Folsom too, to better get the criminal/ex-con's life. So, that little role further shows the complexity of criminal/reformed criminal's life and the often limited choices they too have once they've been in that world--be exploited again and again by that shit head diner guy or (maybe more than the money) be valued by those who've walked a similar life path and--right or wrong--are shrewd and know how to get maximum gain for their flippin everyday life's efforts. Also, the film needed a plausible character to have sold them out and they're usual driver (who did so under duress/under threat of death) was that person.
@tremellk4 жыл бұрын
They had no driver!!!!! Without him they can't do the heist at all. HELLO!

Interesting. That is an engaging story structure. What you're saying about pacing is probably more interesting however! Have you read Zaillian's script for 'The Irishman'? @SwissMarksman I know the point of the movie is to show you the private lives of the main characters, so it is like a heist and a drama However, I don't think those scenes are very well written, they don't really influence the plot that much for the most part and are actually a bit cringey at times Michael Mann wrote the movie, and the crime drama plots are good, but the private dramas not so much. I wrote a similar comment elsewhere on YT and someone agreed that I was '100% correct', so I'm not alone.

Loved the acting but hated the final shootout. Lots of LAPD policemen and civilians die or are severely wounded, but Al Pacino's character never has to face social or psychological consequences. Apprehending the criminals in that manner was rash, sure to lead to civilian deaths, it is a major blunder on the part of the police who had full knowledge of the danger of engaging these men in a confrontation in a city center in an improvised manner. So, the brutality of the gang is not earned, because the consequences of their attack is not felt. Conversely, I found that Neil's girlfriend "forgiving" of his ways is really not earned. For a seemingly normal girl to accept just like that to follow a MURDERER to the other side of the world... If her character had been developed more extensively, it could have been pulled off, but as it attends it seems the characters serve the plot, not the opposite. Again, I love many many things in this movie. But it is no jewel.
