I'm surprised a sofa fire is 2.5 megawatts. That's like over 1000 electric fan heaters or a Bugatti Veyron engine at full tilt. Having said that from images they can burn pretty bright.

The Bugatti is an interesting comparison. Yes its a cool car with impressive engineering. But it is still burning petrol (oil derived hydrocarbons) to gain power. The couch is also made from alot of oil derived hydrocarbons (foam and plastic). So if you think less about the car and more about the fuel source and the timing of the energy release it makes a bit more sense 🙂
