Thank you for this. I now understand what is happening. My unit isn't broke, it's still tough as nails doing its job. This explains why after it defrosts, it blows hot air like it should. VERY HELPFUL VIDEO.

@Elizabeth-ts4om9 жыл бұрын
How often it defrosts depends on the weather conditions. If it is very cold or very humid it will defrost more often.
@nathang.17443 жыл бұрын
most of these units also come with a timed defrost. typically one can expect a defrost to occur every 30 min to 1 hour. what i would be worried about is how long they go into defrost. because the discharge line can run pretty hot when it’s in defrost too long. especially when it’s a warmer day outside

yes Defrost mode like my Grandpa Jerry always told me about, before when I though it was acting weird now I've learned he was right all along. He would always tell me it was normal for it to act like that in defrost mode, but how do know it's just defrost mode or if the capacitor or fan motor is bad?

what cost more to use, the heat pump or the gas furnace? we have both, wife dont want to use the HP, cost more than natural gas?
@crazyjdkid6 жыл бұрын
Depends on how cold it is and the cost of nat gas vs electricity.
@Lilmiket10005 жыл бұрын
Definitely gas cost more. but heat pumps start to not work in the 20s. I have a gas electric hybrid system and if i heat with gas all month my bill is 80 dollars and my heat is the only thing in the house on gas. if i use the heat pump my electric bill is 60 dollars. and everything in my house is powered from electric. Im in Charlotte, NC. so I mean it would depend on your local rates. but im pretty sure gas gonna be higher.
@crazyjdkid5 жыл бұрын
@@Lilmiket1000 Interesting! It also depends on where you live. The colder the area, the less efficient a heat pump will be. My gas equipment is much cheaper to run than my electric. But like you said it greatly depends on the rates.
@nathang.17443 жыл бұрын
in any climate (except for people where summers don’t get above 60°) you should have a heat pump. with any source of backup heat. because even though in the dead winter it may be too cold to run a heat pump.. you can still run it in the fall and early spring where days are in the high 30s to low 40s

@nathang.17443 жыл бұрын
Defrosts on all 1 stage units are loud. especially just coming in to defrost and just coming out of defrost for scroll compressor condensers. This is because the scroll is reversing direction. So the scroll will lock up for about 15 seconds. Another reason why defrosts are loud is because the fan mutes some of the compressor noise during normal operation but in defrost the fan isn’t on so it’s straight compressor noise.
