Heat treated some a shirogami gyuto and developed a warp I couldn't get out, so I made a tungsten carbide hammer to attempt to remove the warp. I hope you enjoy!

The tagane ("chisel") hammer is a game changer once you add it to your kit! Japanese knife makers have utilized them for a very long time. My understanding is that a small piece of very high carbon steel was forge welded to the hammer face and left very hard prior to the existence of tungsten carbide. Murray Carter has done some excellent explanations of the traditional approach, if you search around. Some of the warp can come back in grinding but much less than you might suspect. A smaller hammer and higher number of sharp strikes seems to have a more persistent and deeper effect than a heavier hammer with fewer strikes. Killer work man, as usual.

I appreciate that. Thank you. I always like when people share their knowledge with me in the comments. I’m a fan of learning, so it’s much appreciated. I just barely removed a warp with this hammer, then ground off all the marks. None of the warp came back, so now I’m a believer. 😁

looks pretty good. most people make the mistake of trying to melt the rod with the torch instead of using the heat of the base material which leads to lack of fusion. beautiful gyuto. ive been obsessed with them lately.

I have no doubt I made that mistake. Hahaha. I’m definitely not good at brazing, but I haven’t had anything fail yet. I want to make sure that’s from doing it right, and not from luck, so I appreciate your comment. And thanks a ton for the compliment.

Did you thermocycle somewhere in the heat treating operation or did I miss it? At any rate the knife is fantastic.

When you hit your hardened blade with your tungsten point hammer to straigthten it up, you are strain hardening it. That is why you get wierd etching marks. Be careful with this technique, i personally don't do it because you can see it when the straigtened part is polished. Thanks for the video, very informative as always !

Thanks for the info. Someone on IG mentioned that it might be work hardening the steel, which it sounds like that’s definitely the case. I won’t do it on my hamon blades anymore, but I’ll still do it on my regular satin finished blades. I don’t do polished blades, so I’m not worried about that part. I appreciate you. Thank you!!

@@Hathenbrucksteelworks what i do is that i clamp my knife on a steel plate in order to bend it straight and then i temper my blade in an oven. And it gets straight. I am gonna send you a video on Instagram because i find it difficult to explain.
